Lucky Hank (AMC) S: Bob Odenkirk, Mireille Enos - premieres 3/19/23
Bob Odenkirk’s next series for AMC has a premiere date. Lucky Hank, an eight-episode series about an English department chairman having a mid-life crisis, will bow March 19 on AMC and AMC+.
Told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr. (Odenkirk), Lucky Hank follows the exploits of an unlikely chairman in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. It also stars Mireille Enos as Lily, William’s wife and the vice principal of the local high school. Just as Hank’s life begins to unravel, Lily also begins to question the path she’s on and the choices she’s made.
Recurring guest stars for the series include Oscar Nunez (The Office) as the dean of Railton College where Devereaux works; Tom Bower (Die Hard 2) as William Henry Devereaux, Sr, a retired, distinguished academic; Kyle Maclachlan (Twin Peaks) as College President Dickie Pope; and Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) as Tom Leska, an old flame of Lily Devereaux.
Aaron Zelman (Silicon Valley) and Paul Lieberstein (The Office), who adapted the project from the novel “Straight Man” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo, serve as co-showrunners.
Zelman, Lieberstein, Odenkirk, Director Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire), Russo, Naomi Odenkirk and Marc Provissiero (PEN15) are executive producers.

Should be interesting to see how Odenkirk works with new creative team outside of Vince and Peter. Since we have no idea how good or bad this show is, it's probably a good idea to just start out with this one thread and see if there's actually anything to discuss from this show.

So he's playing "Hank"... couldn't have named him Walt or Jesse?
IMDB titled this to match the book (Straight Man)... but I guess AMC decided the title may throw some people off.
I enjoyed the book - will give this a shot.

Sounds entertaining but slight. Seems like a weird time of year to run it. There are so many heavy hitters coming out right now, it's likely to get lost in the mix. And it has almost no chance of Emmy consideration since it will be competing against the fantastic final half-season of Saul. They should have hung onto this until June when the TV landscape would have been a lot quieter.

Like Decker, I feel like this series is going to get completely lost coming out right now. AMC is also airing this on multiple networks tonight as well. They really want eyes on it. But coming off Better Call Saul, this is going to be a hard sell to get people to watch a brand new character that Odenkirk is playing.
Although, the early reviews seem pretty positive

I bet it’s safe for a while unless it really tanks. Odenkirk has been part of the AMC family for a while now. Plus a lot of the AMC originals that were huge are now gone (nothing in the Breaking Bad universe is left and the original incarnation of The Walking Dead is done). Might check it out eventually.

Decent pilot, mostly because Odenkirk is so good. It struggled a bit with focus and point though. Where is the show going and why?

It reminded me a bit of the show Sandra Oh was on... The Chair.

the first ep was nothing special. it was ok. i stuck with the ep and i'll watch more. just hope it takes a couple to get its' footing. there was nothing outstanding about it, but of course Odenkirk was great. But, the whole he's a chair and then not and then again. what was that about? showing his luck? i dunno, this was merely ok.

Enjoyed the book, and so far I'm enjoying the show. I like the dry, smart humor.
Didn't expect to see Nancy Robertson appear in this. A nice surprise - especially since she's good at playing someone who's well educated/knowledgeable.

I think it reairs tonight at some point on AMC for anyone else that missed it and hates watching VOD as it comes with forced commercials. (at least my provider does it that way)

I see my DVR has an "new episode" of Better Call Saul scheduled to record, but the description is "An Exclusive Look at Lucky Hank". Ha, sneaky AMC.

I finally made the time last night to at least watch the 1st episode. My reaction: It's okay I guess. Honesty, I wasn't really feeling it. I guess since it's a totally different genre and character compared to Saul Goodman, it's going to take a bit for me to get used to Odenkirk playing this character. And I noticed the head writer and showrunner is "Toby" from The Office. So just the writing style is going to hard to get used it.
I'm not a big fan or watcher of dry quirky comedy. So we'll see if I start getting more into it. I have 3 more episodes to catch up on. And I don't know if there is really anything compelling to talk about. This doesn't seem like one of those shows that spawns much discussion.

I was in the middle of the third episode, -as Hank was trying to drive around the storage bin, -when it struck me that I just wasn't enjoying the story and I deleted it then and there along with the other episode on my DVR. Odenkrk is fine in the role, but the story just wasn't engaging enough for me.

I'm still watching, but it's only OK. There's nothing I hate, but there's nothing all that compelling either.
This really doesn't follow the book at all... it's basically just using some characters, attitudes and basic setting. If they gave the lead character a different name and there was no mention that it was based off of Straight Man, then I would never know.

For me Odenkirk alone is enough to keep me watching. Anything beyond him is a bonus, but it has been thin gruel for the most part.

The finale aired last night and I figured I'd give my thoughts before the massive influx of posts about it.
It was meh. There are some good scenes here and there and smart little quips throughout the season, but there's not a lot of intriguing storylines.
I wish they'd drop the daughter/husband story line. They don't take a lot of runtime, but for how uninteresting it is - it would be best just to drop them altogether.
I know the show has some issues with keeping my full attention when I can't remember any of the characters names except for Hank and Billie. Seriously, I'm sitting here right now trying to remember any other main/recurring characters name and I can't do it. There's also Jeffrey Epstein, but I'm only remembering that for obvious reasons - plus he's a very minor character.
I'd be surprised if this renewed for another season.
