They gave them some extra money to film extra scenes for Discovery since the season filming was already completed when they decided not to renew it.

I know Discovery is very divisive here, but I think the folks at Paramount and CBS studios valued it as it helped re-launch and revive international interest in Star Trek again, especially among younger viewers. And it was one of the first original shows on the service, so they consider it a legacy show. Yeah I know the series hasn’t made most in this forum happy, but there’s a lot of fans of it.

As others have noted, season 5 of STD is a given, but I agree that I'd rather have Legacy than Academy.

I like Star Trek Discovery (more once season two) Season four could be an ending, they tied up most things rather nicely. Yes, I would pick Star Trek Legacy vs Academy.

I like Tilly. And I like the idea of a Starfleet Academy show. But I don't know if Tilly can really carry a show and I have zero interest in seeing anything else in the 32nd century.
I have great interest in any and all of the characters, legacy or newcomer alike, in Picard S3.

I figured I may as well leave these two videos here.
I spoilered the latter as its thumbnail spoils the former.

They need to make a "Regeneration Part Two" that shows Section 31 digging up the body after Spock leaves.

I can't help but wonder if Terry Matalas used that argument with Paramount to get them to pay for all of the actors to come back. Like, that other space franchise whiffed it big time, but we can make it happen.

At least we got it! Kathleen Kennedy squandered the opportunity to have the three of them reunited on the big screen. At least if that had happened the whole ST would have been worth it just for that one scene. Not even any promotional material was shot with the three of them. Such a waste.
And as much as I would have loved to have not had to go through the first two seasons to get the third at least it still exists and we got 10 solid episodes of exactly what we've been hoping for for 20 years.

Maybe, but not in my personal anecdotal experience with Gen-X friends. And my SW fandom is basically the original trilogy (though I really liked Rogue One and thought Solo and Obi-Wan were decent (which I think most of the SW nerds don't like)) .

Yeah, we got tired of the SW vs ST rivalry a long time ago. They're each doing different things with "sci fi" and you could even argue SW is barely sci-fi at that. It's closer to a fairy tale that simply happens to be in space. At least Trek sometimes asks itself "uh, we fucked up something via technology, what are the implications towards the human experience regarding this?"

* Many Star Trek fans are also Star Wars fans.
* But Star Wars fans aren't necessarily Star Trek fans.
* The Star Wars fandom is bigger than Star Trek fandom, and tends to be more mainstream.
* Star Trek fans are more of fans in science fiction in general and are better versed in the genre's history, tropes, and language than Star Wars fans.
The Venn Diagram probably looks a lot like this:

Star Trek is more traditional science fiction that ponders our own future, presents moral/ethical dilemmas, and metaphor for current conflicts, issues, and experiences.

Yes that's a very apt description. I agree. Either way I don't think there's ever been a rivalry. Star Wars fans (that don't like Star Trek) don't care about Star Trek and Star Trek fans are probably fans of both and know that Star Wars isn't scifi anyways so why would there be a rivalry.
And everyone else thinks that both are just geeky loser nerds.

The Mandalorian being a western was one of the best "expansions" of the SW universe they've ever had. It's so close to the Kurosawa stuff that George originally borrowed from and I wish the show would drift back a bit towards that feel.
And yeah, Star Wars is a way bigger fandom, the overlap is there but like the diagram shows way more people are into SW, even casually, then into Trek. Just look at people walking around at something like Six Flags, and you will see people of *all* ages (especially little kids) with SW shirts but almost never Trek t-shirts.
