It’s been a little while since it was first reported that the Weeknd was set to create and star in his own HBO series, but a year and several behind-the-scenes shakeups later, The Idolfinally has its first teaser trailer, and it’s everything that we more or less expected. The Idol, according to the teaser, comes from the “sick and twisted minds” of Abel Tesfaye (the Weeknd) and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, so take that as you will. The show follows Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star lured into a cult led by Tesfaye’s character, and features all the Levinson trademarks: beautiful young people, drugs, mood lighting. In addition to Tesfaye and Depp, the series will star a huge cast of singers and actors, including Troye Sivan, Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Anne Heche, Hari Nef, and Nico Hiraga. A premiere date for The Idol has not yet been announced.
This is an A24 production and is also co-created by The Weeknd

This thing sounds like it’s going to be a disaster. I don’t remember hearing the part of them having previously shooting 80% of it and scrapping it all when Levinson took over. Given the issues he’s had with some of the actresses on Euphoria, the comments from people about the sex scenes Levinson wrote seem believable.

What is the link with Britney Spears that I keep seeing mentioned with this show...some say its based on her, others say no.
The girl in the photo certainly looks like early 2000s Britney....
The Weekend's PR team must be working overtime these days. He seems to be going through some personality crisis with changing over to his real name, discarding his old image and turning into a new actor producer one...never seems to end well when celebrities try doing this...stick to your wheelhouse buddy...you're a musician...with a lot of songs that radio stations play to death

Yup this show is so not good. At least you don’t have to wait long for the requisite nudity. Sam Levinson makes it pretty clear about how he feels regarding his Intimacy Coordinators on Euphoria.

Considering all of the fuss and controversy leading up to this, I thought the first episode was surprisingly tame. A woman's breasts. A dirty picture leaked on the internet. A brief masturbation scene. Hardly anything scandalous or sexy. Might have been a bigger deal three decades ago, but now... eh.

That was some of the cringiest dialogue in a TV show that I can ever remember.
Hank Azaria as, what I assume is, a Eastern European tough guy was a weird choice.
