Well, the run to the end began with the last (awesome) episode. Episode 5 thoughts:

--Great. Hopper's back in prison. As is his guard friend. Fuck you, Yuri. And your proud mother.
--Fuck you, too, Mr. Wheeler.
--Cool to see Dr. Owens and Dr. Brenner onscreen together.
--Love the haunted house/Scooby-Doo vibe from them visiting Creel's house.
--My fingers are like arrows, my fists like iron, and my feet like spears. Murray has grown on me, but I still don't feel like he is a necessary character.
--I have doubts that plane crash would be as soft a landing as it was here.
--So long, Patrick. We barely knew you.
--Damn, Eleven got her mojo back

So glad that Eleven got her monstrous powers back in this one. She about to raise hell.

I never would have guessed there would ever be a scene with Mike and Will burying a body in the desert. -eek-

Fuck you, Dr. Owens, I trusted you! OK, maybe Owens was being helpful after all, but I don't trust Brenner one bit.

Murray kung-fu fighting on the plane was a bit over-the-top, but entertaining nonetheless.

I wonder what is up with the Chekhov's gun mysterious drawing that Will is keeping with him?

So Eleven has her powers back, sort of? But only if she gets really angry?

Is there any pattern to Vecna's victims, other than people who have had some trauma in their lives?

Will Jason lay off Eddie now that he has seen Vecna's work firsthand? Maybe become an ally to the Scooby gang?

Bye Bye Love reunion! I watch that movie all the time. To bad Quaid is a crazy person.
This orderly is sketchy. I got a feeling it’s Vechna not sure how they’ll get there though.

I get the vibe that Will is gay and its a picture of him and Mike.

I mean all the awkwardness and the quick scene of the girl trying to flirt with him in class..

Im loving this new season so far. Also is it me or does it seem like they are setting this up for Steve and Nancy to get back together.

I’m wondering if that creepy lab assistant to everybody out and not 11. Either way, I’m betting it’s a false memory.

oddly, it did seem n second viewing (after ep 1), that the kids bodes seemed misconfigured much like Vecna does….

Re: Stranger Things (S4E05) -- "Chapter Five: The Nina Project"

Am I the only person just completely not digging this season? I finished this episode last night and I'm just at a loss for what exactly they're going for.
  • Major horror influences (specifically Nightmare on Elm Street), but none of the practical effects that made those films
  • Every episode could be cut down by like 20min
  • Everything feels too polished. Clothes are too clean, stuff is too new. I really noticed it on Max, who lives in a trailer park, but has brand-new clothes that don't seem to have ever been worn before
  • Major missed opportunity to set the villain apart from the previous stuff and make him a separate resident of the Upside Down (although possibly that WILL be the case, but usually the kids' conjecture turns out to be correct)
  • The dialogue has really been bugging me, but I can't put my finger on if its the script or acting. Max really stands out as being irritating
  • It's odd to me that they kept the D&D terminology and somewhat abandoned the holiday theme (I know it's "Spring Break", but that's sort of like the least "vibey" of the themes so far)
  • The kids kind of have an "adult switch", where they'll act like old pros one moment and like incompetent children the next
  • The amount of lingering shots of Will is really just baffling. Like his interactions with Eleven and Mike are great at showing his conflict over his feelings and identity, but they hold on him almost ominously it seems like
  • The Hopper and Eleven stuff is just so boring to me. Holy shit I get it, you had traumatic pasts and now you're in unfamiliar situations. I don't need so much time focused on that stuff
Overall it feels like its treating its audience as a bunch of idiots. To a certain degree I get it: they're making a show for people who aren't necessarily familiar with the stuff they're swiping from paying homage to. I don't know why I could give a pass to previous seasons, minus the big CGI showdowns they all ended with. Maybe it's because I binged a ton of 80s horror this past October and that's so fresh in my mind. Just none of this seems authentic. It's like it was made not for people who liked that old stuff, but those who WANTED to like that old stuff, but didn't because "ew gross an old movie".

I'm really enjoying it. Not to sound flippant, but have you considered smoking pot? I find a good joint will help get me out of the "analyzing" mode when watching shows, and just "absorbing" them instead.

Haha all my viewings of the show this season have been "enhanced". Although I watched Chapter 6 last night and I re-engaged with the show a lot more.

Man am I sick of the ham-fisted shoving the below down our throats. They could not be more obvious with it. What ever way it turns out it is so poorly done and beyond annoying.

Yeah and I am not really digging this season. More of a chore to get through and feels like something I have to do since I was invested in earlier seasons.

Yeah, so you were forced to watch something that goes against your sensitivities. Thoughts and prayers.

I love this show, but the Duffer Brothers are rarely subtle in their storytelling.
