So Zach was booted by unanimous vote? If his shot in the dark had worked, would they have re-voted?

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

That was just about the most boring episode of Survivor since the start. I'm not a fan of the "get to know the players better" segments that seem to take up the first half hour of the show now. I'd prefer a reward challenge, but I know it's probably much cheaper this way.

Maryanne sure is OTT.

I've watched every season of Survivor since it first aired but so far I'm just letting this one pile up on the DVR. Last season was such a slog to get through that I'm not sure it's worth the effort any longer.

Didn't want to glance the thread to avoid spoilers in case I do watch, but is this season worth a watch? I quit last season as I was hating it. I've watched every season since season 2, but last season just broke my tradition.

Save your time, it's awful. I fell asleep midway through this last episode then had trouble finishing it the next day. Maybe try to watch the first episode and see if you like the cast but it's like 99% you won't.

Pretty obvious this show only cares about representation now and winning SJW points for their life lessons and feel good player backstories. Meanwhile none of these people are even remotely interesting from a game play/competitive aspect.

Thanks for saving my time. I was NOT interested in the direction they were taking the show last season and it sounds like more of the same. It’s sad… this was a show I used to look forward to, and was part of my life for over 20 years. I guess all good things must come to an end.

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

also still trying desperately to stay a fan but agree with everyone that its a challenge!

why do the producers think we want to see regular people? I can see them at Walmart. Please send your casting person to Santa Monica Promenade like you used to do and pick out hot people who just happen to have recently moved to LA to become actor/singer/dancers but used to be farmers/bartenders/retail workers, etc.

I agree with Jeff. Part of the fun of watching the show is that is like watching the lab results of some PSYCH 101 experiment. But he seems like he is more interested in the social dynamics of watching different groups work together.
I think the average viewer is more interested in the competitive part of who they think will end up winning out of a select group so they can have someone to root for.
The problem with the last 10 seasons is that there is no one anyone really cares about rooting for. It has become more like the presidential election, who do you most NOT want to win.

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

For the most part, I agree with bluesix and others that Survivor has not been appointment viewing for many years now, but I still watch because it is easy enough to fast forward and speed things along. To me, one of the biggest mistakes that Jeff made to the structure of the show in the past 4-5 years is to allow so much whispering amongst the players, or constant private huddles with other players at TCs. TC is where Jeff asks the questions and everyone, ALL the tribe mates at TC, Jeff, and the audience get to hear the answer(s). It needs to become part of the shows Terms and Conditions that private huddles are verboten at TC. If someone tries to start a huddle or leans over to whisper to another player, Jeff needs to jump in and say, hey, Billy Bob, use your words and answer the question out loud.

It is not the constant advantages and immunity idols that have been added to the game that are the biggest issue, because figuring out how to use an idol/advantage without painting a target on your back is part of what makes things challenging to survive from one challenge to another, no, it is that players are not being forced to say what they have to say out loud at TCs, and it is also not good TV when all the players try to break apart and just whisper to a few other tribe mates, It is no secret in Survivor threads that this is a pet peeve of mine, as I bring it up all the time, but it really needs to stop.

I do not know Maryanne from Adam (as the saying goes), but she is far from the most annoying Survivor player that has been on the show going back many years. Her exuberance on the show can be a fun thing to watch, but I agree that if she is in that mode 24/7 it is indeed driving her tribe a bit up a wall. There have been wanna be villains, and even some players whose lack of thought into how they plan to stay in the game other than riding someone's coat tails that have actually had me screaming at the tv more often than not because those players suck to watch on TV.

Oh God, no. The seasons where 75% of the players were L.A. recruits were like watching carpet mildew. Some of the dumbest people on Earth who didn't know a damned thing about the game.

And I'm not going to quote them, but anyone who in 2022 is still using SJW as a negative epithet is saying much more about their lack of ethics then any thing they think they're saying.

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

I consider these two pandemic seasons to be just an imperfect solution to a difficult problem of filming Survivor in a time of lockdowns and Quarantine. I am hopeful that the next two seasons will be much better and more interesting. This is now three consecutive New Cast seasons without a single All Star worthy contestant. That said I would love to see Devins and Christian return some time soon. Those were amazing contestants.

They got rid of the longtime casting director a few seasons ago which is when the big shift in the cast happened. Also, the cast now has to be made up of 50% or greater non-white people which probably will cause some differences compared to the kind of casts they used to have.

Most of the cast are Type A. personalities who are either more outgoing or accomplished then 90% of people their own age. In fact your criticism is just the opposite of how the show actually recruits contestants. We rarely do see "regular" people or even those in the bottom of the economic bracket, the rare instance it has occured the show goes out of it's way to pity them and do poverty porn backstories( see past players Donathan or Lauren the fisherwoman)

Strange episode last night. It was obvious TC was going to be interesting when it started with so much time to go.

Daniel is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I just want to say that I do not feel it was a cop out to get the teams out of the water, just being pummeled by a never ending wave of swells really did look unfun to deal with. Jeff made the right call to pick up the challenge on the beach. I think the Hercules dude who took care of holding up the ladder by himself and actually completing the challenge with no help from Jeff and the bare minimum help from his tribe, well, he turns out to be a slob at camp, if what I saw from the coming up next episode bit at the end was what it looked like, a bunch of tribe mates bitching about someone who is a mess monger back at camp.

I agree with you 100%. Jonathan's BEAST MODE aside, that was a brutal challenge considering the circumstances. Jeff did make the right call.

That TC was nuts but I glad that Hai stuck to his guns and made that idiot Daniel flip on Jenny.

I have a feeling that Daniel will be around for a long time... his aloofness is what will have others take him to the Final Three just to have dead weight along.

This was a case of a poorly planned challenge and the only reason Jonathan was able to hold up the ladder was his height.

hah! I've got news for you, MOST of the people cast on these shows already live in LA. When Survivor says they are from Bumfucknowhere, Alabama it just means they were born or grew up there but most of them probably just recently moved to LA and ended up getting cast.

I've witnessed this myself on Santa Monica Promenade while there with friends who are 'actor/model' types and got approached by a casting person. That's where the guys like Ozzy Lusth and Joe Angrim come from. This isn't really a secret but I dont think the reality shows want people to know they do this since they still want viewers to think anyone can apply and get on. That's why I made the reference.

Yep, and the bartenders, waitresses, personal trainers, substitute teachers, bicycle messengers, etc are all unemployed actor wannabes.

Along those lines, I don't mind that they paused the challenge, but I would have restarted it in the water when conditions were better.

I'm not a fan of the growing number of advantages and stipulations, but it made for an interesting trial council. It feels like the producers maybe didn't fully anticipate having to reveal that some people can't vote, though. That certainly is going to have an impact on the game moving forward.

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

This weeks challenge again crushed, and it wasn't a strength one ( well the immunity challenge was ) Taku is just a well drilled team, and maybe that is down to Johnathan leadership, but they flew through the rope challenge.

It was amusing then to watch him swim and pull the boat and Maryanne

And always fun watching people jump to catch a key in the air,

Sure Jonathan is a well crafted tremendous machine capable of using his abilities to maximum advantage in a variety of situations to quite literally carry his team to victory after victory, but I don't get why anyone thinks he's anything special. Anyone who worked at that their entire life could do the same thing.

Re: Survivor Season 42 Premieres 3/9/22

There was a lot of sour grapes on the other tribes, claiming that Jonathan single-handedly led his team to victory (and making it sound like that is unfair) when that is just not true. Jonathan's strength would not help our hurt him in the rope portion of the challenge, and since the rope part was most of the challenge he was indeed part of a well oiled team that just did not flub that portion of the challenge.

I always like watching folks either get tangled up in the ropes, it is good comedy, or I get a kick out of teams that can speed through such a challenge making it look fairly easy. There are some challenges where it is not fun to watch someone struggle (the example that goes to the top of the list is the water one from last week), but you can always count on the rope challenge to make you laugh out loud at your tv as the tribemates one after another get tangled up.
