Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV+) - premieres 11/17/23
https://deadline.com/2022/01/apple-t...se-1234916545/
In a massive deal that expands on Legendary’s Monsterverse, Apple TV+ has ordered a new live-action series featuring Godzilla and the Titans.
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.
The series will be produced by Legendary Television and executive produced by co-creators Chris Black — who will also serve as showrunner — and Matt Fraction, alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell and Toho Co. Ltd. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will executive produce for Toho. Toho is the owner of the Godzilla character and has licensed the rights to Legendary for this series as a natural byproduct of their long-term relationship on the film franchise.
Talks about expanding the universe via a series began after Godzilla v. Kong became one of the first big box-office hits in the pandemic era. Legendary already is developing the next untitled film set in the Monsterverse but saw potential in developing a series and began talking to buyers that were interested. Apple showed immediate interest as it looks to add more branded IP to a slate of original TV series that continues to grow, and a deal was soon struck to start development on the series.
Beginning in 2014 with Godzilla and continuing with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Monsterverse films have accumulated nearly $2 billion at the global box office and is expanding with a new anime series, Skull Island. The series will premiere globally on Apple TV+. alongside an expanding offering of sweeping, world-building dramas including upcoming Wool, based on Hugh Howey’s New York Times best-selling trilogy of the same name; Foundation, based on the novels by Isaac Asimov and created by David S. Goyer; Invasion, a new sci-fi drama series from Simon Kinberg and David Weil; and post-apocalyptic series See, starring Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and Alfre Woodard.

And how many people (including my family) wouldn’t have seen it as early as we did if it were only in theaters? Studios need to pull their head out of their asses and realize the theater experience was dying before the pandemic.

YES! A Godzilla/kaiju series on streaming? Bring it! I can't wai--
Oh.
Well fuck, we've cared so much about the human characters in all the movies so far. Why not another 2 hours of the talentless Stranger Things girl picking her ass?

Godzilla vs Kong would have easily made $400-500M more had it's receipts not been cannabalized by people watching it for "free" at home. it did okay, but it could have been a Billion dollar movie.
You're entitled to consume entertainment how ever you feel is convenient and affordable to you. but the business model is not dead. Spider-Man No Way Home says otherwise.

And like it or not, Spider-Man is bigger than Godzilla in the USA. Especially being part of the MCU juggernaut and double especially with the last two Spider-Man actors included.

Not sure I'd watch if this were on HBO Max (which I get for free since I have HBO through xfinity), but definitely not paying for Apple TV+.

Unless people were signing up for HBOMax specifically for a certain movie, it's not really the same kind of revenue stream as the box office. A family of four going to a theater and buying four tickets isn't the same as watching it at home on a streaming service they probably already subscribe to. The studios want that box office cash.
And this is very true. I don't think Godzilla has ever been a huge box office draw; the 1998 movie didn't get a sequel, and KotM underperformed.

I can't think of a worse IP for a TV series then the monsterverse. Seriously the humans are always the worst part of a kaiju film. The best they can achieve is being tolerable so now they're going to spend a dozen hours focused of human stuff for maybe 5 minutes of kaiju action? No thanks.

AppleTV+ is $5 a month - totally worth it if you just like a few things on the service (for me it's worth it for For All Mankind alone). I'd be interested in this but I'm curious how much the monsters will really be a part of it on a "TV" budget, even with Apple behind it.
I'm actually more excited to hear that Wool is coming. I love that book series.

I'm very much at the point with media where less is more. One thing I've really been a fan of is the Disney+ shows. They have a pretty tight 8ish episodes where it feels like a lot of other services would stretch it out a lot more. Now that's probably more about Disney being cheap and not wanting to spring for more episodes but I still appreciate a tightly told story then a long drawn out story. I think the human side of things have improved drastically with the recent movies starting with 2014's Godzilla (is that the what we're calling the monsterverse? or is the monsterverse all the Godzilla movies and spin offs?) But even then if you really get into the human characters and start to really analyze them they'd all fall apart pretty quickly. Hopefully I'm wrong and it'll be great but I'm definitely not investing the time until some reviews start coming out.

Matt Shakman has come onboard the live-action Godzilla series at Apple from Legendary Television, Variety has learned exclusively.
The show was ordered at Apple back in January. Shakman will direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer on the series. The untitled series continues the story of the Legendary Monsterverse established in films like “Kong: Skull Island” and 2014’s “Godzilla.”
Shakman most recently directed all of the Disney+ Marvel series “WandaVision” in addition to executive producing. Shakman picked up an Emmy nomination for directing the series. He has also helmed the first episode of Hulu’s “The Great” as well as episodes of shows like “Game of Thrones,” “The Boys,” “Mad Men,” and “Fargo.” He has directed over 40 episodes of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to date. He is also set to direct the upcoming “Star Trek” film sequel that is currently in the works.
He is repped by UTA, Artists First, and Morris Yorn.
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the Monsterverse series will explore one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.
Chris Black and Matt Fraction co-created the series with both executive producing. Black will also serve as showrunner. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures will also executive produce along with Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita of Toho Co. Ltd. Toho is the owner of the Godzilla character and has licensed the rights to Legendary for the series.
There have been four films in the rebooted Monsterverse to date: “Godzilla” in 2014, “Kong: Skull Island” in 2017, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” in 2019, and most recently “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021. The films have collectively grossed nearly $2 billion at the global box office. There is also a “Skull Island” anime series currently in the works at Netflix.
