WHY COULD SAM SEE WHEN HE "REPLACED" A BLIND MAN? WOULD HE BE ABLE TO
HEAR AS A DEAF PERSON? IN OTHER WORDS, IS IT SAM'S MIND THAT'S LEAPING, OR
HIS BODY?

Sam is physically leaping through time, his mass being exchanged with
that of the leapee. Sam, not sharing the handicap, will not exhibit
it. Sam's entire body and soul trades places with the leapee, although
the physical aura stays around.

To quote The Source Himself (Don Bellisario):

"...when Sam leaps in and bounces somebody out, I like to think of it
this way: ... if that person was hit by a car and they broke their leg
and hit the street and then Sam leaped in, Sam would not have a broken
leg. But if Sam leaped in and was crossing the street and was hit by
the car, then Sam would have the broken leg."

In other words:

He does not share handicaps or injuries suffered by the leapee before
his leap in, but will sustain injuries suffered while he is there.

The fact that it is Sam's entire body that is leaping is supported by
a great number of episodes: "The Wrong Stuff," "Nowhere to Run,"
"Blind Faith," "Runaway," "Trilogy part 3," "Pool Hall Blues," "The
Color of Truth" (Jesse Tyler was revealed to suffer from rheumatism in
"Shock Theater," which Sam gave no indication of being affected by in
this ep), and probably any episode in which he is a woman and does
things beyond her normal physical strength. (Yes, this even includes
"8 1/2 Months" (see SP#8).) This is also supported by the fact that
Sam sees himself unless he looks in a mirror. [Kwong]

Also, it is stated that Sam and Al are linked via their mesons and
neurons, which are physical entities. If Sam does not leap physically,
then this link would be lost. [Kwong]

The fact that certain individuals--including himself--can see Sam
indicates that there is something behind the aura for them to see.

* * *

In regards to what Al sees:
Al sees the leapee, initially. In the episode entitled "What Price,
Gloria", Al was out of control at seeing Sam as the gorgeous
secretary. Al probably recognizes Sam because they are linked through
their brainwave transmissions, which is what is used by the project to
locate Sam in time.

This then appears to change through the seasons. Later episodes begin
to hint that Al sees Sam as Sam. By the fifth season, this is stated
explicitly to be the case. A possible theory is that, after the whole
mess in "What Price Gloria," Al had Gooshie re-configure the IC to

And in the Waiting Room:

To everyone at the Project (with the possible exception
of Al (see #2), the leapee looks like Sam. The waiting room has been
described by Don Bellisario as being a sterile, hospital-like room
where the leapee is examined by the Project's medical staff. We've
seen it a few times and it's big and blue, and located at the end of
an isolated ocrridor. Once we got to see (and HEAR) the leapee when
she entered the imaging chamber with Al, and she looked to us like the
image Sam saw in the mirror. This is probably due to the same
mechanism that allows us to see Sam as Sam [Bellisario's rules ].

The leapee is occupying Sam's aura, not his body (see #8). The
audience sees the leapee in the WR.

Finally, who else saw Sam as Sam:

Small children, the "mentally absent", animals and people near death
can see him [And pretty blondes with very low IQs, if Dean Stockwell
got his way :-)]. Al has explained that children and animals see
things as they really are because they exist in a natural alpha state.
Also, if a person's brainwaves were sufficiently in tune with Sam's,
that person would be able to see and hear Al too.
That explains a lot and actually sounds like the show was consistent with its rules/Bible. Specifically explains why that lady saw him as himself during the civil war (?) and how he was able to have his “own” kid.

But in this new show in the last episode, Addison indicated that Ben should be able to box because of the boxer's body that he's in. I suppose the technology could've advanced. But I don't really think the idea of Ben being able to take on abilities he didn't have previously because the person he leaps into is as fun an idea of Ben being on his own with just his own wits and skills at his disposal.

There is no waiting room in the sequel, Ben and the person he leaps into share the same space. Which does not explain the bad driving in episode 1 but does answer the question of how he handled space so well in episode 2.

is this explicitly stated in the show? I though they were just ignoring it

Not in the show:

“There’s a scientific quantum principle called the law of superposition where two entities can hold the same time and space at the same time,” Wynbrandt explains, although this is a storytelling solution as much as a scientific one. “We personally felt the waiting room was a little difficult to wrap our minds around, so we’re actually moving on from it.”

Re: Quantum Leap (NBC) -- sequel series -- premieres 9/19/22

I thought episode 4 was good. While there were some future scenes, it felt like they spent a lot more time in the past. I also appreciate Ben was already taking to figure some things out himself instead of waiting for Addison.

I’m anxiously awaiting Janice to pop up to Ben as another hologram at some point. Hopefully it’s before he remembers everything.

I like Magic’s story about his time being leapt into, and the impact it had on his life. Very nice he feels compelled to bring Sam home. However, how could he know what happened to him previously?!

Also, not entirely sure I trust the computer techie. Something seems off.

Decent twist in that episode, too.

Each episode so far has been better than the last. They're giving Addison a bit more personality, too.

You guys are missing the shows actual problem. Which is that the original would leave me holding back tears. The one is all icy and sorta fun at times and that’s it.

Re: Quantum Leap (NBC) -- sequel series -- premieres 9/19/22

Well that was an interesting ending. I’ve been fully expecting to see more Janice, but didn’t expect that. I wonder if it’s an evil leaped. Did we ever get any context on the evil leaped? Like was it another program from some point in time that stole the tech?

I did not care for that Congressional person plot. Most because it was so unbelievable and actual Congress person on their own would roll in and do interviews.

One of the biggest issues I have with the present story is how small scope it feels. They can’t get 10 extras to run around on set making it look like a multi billion dollar lab? The world just does t feel lived in.

I see Jewel Staite is in tonight's episodes, which I think is the original pilot before NBC did some shuffling She was in the original press release when the show was picked up.. They may have reshot/removed scenes to fit in better.

Interesting, I didn’t realize that was the original pilot. They had to of switched stuff around because so much of it was based off the cliffhanger of the previous episode.

Im not sure the last thing I saw Jewel in, but she looked very different. I’m sure 80s makeup didn’t help. Maybe she lost some weight?

I liked the plot since the main person of the week seemed to align with Ben’s memories of his mom.

Also, I will say the present plot line and crew are starting to grow on me. The ensemble piece is stating to gel. Plus, the plot is really ramping up. And that’s considering after all the Janice stuff, we haven’t seen from her in episodes.

Oh, and I prefer the old style Ziggy that makes noises.

Wow, my suspicions were confirmed!

The “leap” in this week’s Quantum Leap episode, “What a Disaster!” was actually shot to be the leap in the original pilot episode.

It's not perfect but I'm enjoying the series. I found it funny that they used a knockoff Member's Only jacket instead of a real one with the label.

Actually enjoying this version.

Original is one of my favorite shows.

Something I noticed when Addison uses the round Ziggy she looks at it and seems like she might be looking at a hologram info screen that isn’t there but should be. Money constraints?

I really want to like this but I'm having trouble with the writing. It's so...tropey. "We're stuck in a rut." "I could see in your eyes how much you cared for me." Every episode there's like 6 times where it just feels like it's being written by people on a network drama assembly line and no creativity.

There's also zero chemistry between Ben and Addison. Even understanding he doesn't have his memories, as actors, they have no connection.

That's exactly what this is. It's a primetime network action-drama.

Good episode this week. They really had me on the ropes with the supernatural vs science. Plus the reveal at the end I’ve been expecting for weeks. Guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get more details.

Side note - I appreciate they did a Halloween based episode around Halloween. That’s something you might want to seasonally watch. I’ve found more and more lately shows don’t do those. Give me a New Years, Thanksgiving, etc. episodes during that time of year.

Re: Quantum Leap (NBC) -- sequel series -- premieres 9/19/22

Mid season finale as shown is on a break until January 2.

I thought the episode was pretty good. Odd how much Addison literally just hung around while everything was in lock down. However, it was funny how the teens played up the “imaginary girlfriend” piece.

I was surprised by the big reveal. Seemed like it was something to do with Sam, when it turns out to be about Addison. Hopefully we get some more flashbacks.

Yup, my biggest problem with the show. I was a huge QL fan growing up (taped them all on VHS, bought the novels, joined one of the first QL message boards and, errr, yeah, I wrote fanfic ), and while I am not totally hating this show as I thought I would it just seems so, well, cookie cutter and certainly lacks the charm of the original. And the pacing is really just lighting fast and really doesn't give any breathing room. My complaints mirror those here but there are some things I do enjoy:

-Getting the original actress that played Al's wife back was a nice touch
-I actually find myself more invested in the future (I guess, now present?) plot of Al's daughter and such then in some instances of the tropey leaps (Exorcist, I'm looking at you!)
-I like that Ben can leap outside of his own lifetime giving us more time points then Sam had (outside of Civil War, that is)
-I like that we got to see how a person that was lept into by Sam (in this instance Magic) felt afterwards and how that affected their life (ie: having dreams of Sam)

Things I wish they'd add:
-The future in the original show was designed to look like, well, the future. I mean, a not too distant future of sorts. There is no indication of that here. I mean, come on, at least give one of the gals some glowy earrings.
-I feel the really glossed over everything that makes leaping possible (as though we fans of the original show already know so why explain it again). A better explanation and perhaps a talking Ziggy again would be nice
-I too miss the handlink chirps but I've guess they've had time to iron out the kinks
-Explain or bring in people from the original project. What happened to Tina? Donna (Sam's wife)? Or Sammy Jo who was there specifically working on bringing Sam (her father) home?
-A minor quibble, but why no imagining chamber door?

I don't mind altering some of the stuff established in the original show like leaping outside of one's lifetime or other leapers not having to touch Ben for them to see each other. I'll chalk that up to tech advancing since 1999.

The original series had two great ones in The BoogeyMan as well as Blood Moon which I give a spin to every other Halloween or so.

Re: Quantum Leap (NBC) -- sequel series -- premieres 9/19/22

Episodes back after the break have been a mixed bag. I thought the time loop was pretty good and nice how they masked the “who done it”.

I thought the reveal at the of this week was very interesting. Clearly the “face” the person recalled seemed much older and weather. Curious how that all comes about.
