Raymond Lee has been cast as the lead in NBC’s hourlong pilot Quantum Leap, a reboot of the beloved 1990s sci-fi drama. He will play Dr. Ben Seong, a spiritual successor to Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett from the original series.Lee’s Ben Seong is both a scientist and man of faith. He’s a world-renowned physicist working on a time-travel project known as Quantum Leap.
In the reboot, it’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
Written and executive produced by La Brea EPs Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and executive produced by Blindspot creator Martin Gero as well as Quantum Leap creator/EP Don Bellisario and EP/co-narrator Deborah Pratt, the follow-up series is set in present time though there is a nod to the original, which launched in 1989.
Using the Quantum Leap technology on himself, Ben Seong gets stuck in the late 1980s with amnesia, with the last part also reminiscent of Gero’s Blindspot.
The pilot is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, with Lilien and Wynbrandt exec producing for their I Have an Idea! Entertainment, Bellisario for his Belisarius Productions and Gero via his Quinn’s House Productions.
Bakula has been in talks for a possible involvement but he is not attached to the project at this time.
Lee is currently a series regular on AMC’s series Kevin Can F*** Himself, which is ending with its upcoming second season.

I’m still down for this. The amnesia aspect to the story doesn’t thrill me much but we’ll see how they go about it.

Sam had amnesia in the original, (Swiss cheesed brain as Al called it) he just slowly regained his memories over time. So that makes sense as long as this guy also regains his memories.
My one concern, and maybe it's just the wording, is that it says he's stuck in the 80s? As in that's the only time period he'll leap around in? Hopefully that's just referring to the pilot. Although I imagine the 80's will be a heavily featured decade regardless.
If they're looking for Sam, I guess the 80s make sense with the within your own lifetime thing, since Sam first leaped back in the 80s so he couldn't be anywhere after that. But since it's been 30 years, can Sam now leap past the 80s? Since the 90s wouldn't be the future anymore...I'm thinking about this too much.

It’s been so long since I’ve watched the original series but I vaguely remember Sam having amnesia at the start. That makes sense to have the new guy suffer from it as well. I suppose leaping through time could scramble your brains temporarily. I just hope they use that plot device to stick close to the original series and not make it a long term deal where Ben is wandering around the 80s trying to remember what’s going on.

Yeah, Sam had amnesia too, so this concept isn't new, it fits with the original series. Part of that setup was that Al couldn't tell Sam anything directly because they didn't want to put the future at risk. That was part of the rules Sam setup when designing Project Quantum Leap. I think by mid-season 1 they had dropped that aspect though.

Since the "future" at the time of Quantum Leap was 1999, then logic dictates this story takes place in 2029. I just looked up Raymond Lee and he was born in 1987, so I am going to presume they may have his character be born sometime in the mid to late 80s, which gives them plenty of time to play around with stuff from the past three decades or so if they stick with the original series' set of rules. Since most of the stories were personal, there's no need to go into world changing events like 9/11 or COVID. I think they even made it a point in the original series that world impact stuff should be left alone despite people who funded the project wanting to see it implemented.

Casting Call Detals:
In place of Al, we get Herbert “Magic” Williams, a Vietnam vet and current head of the time travel project. The casting calls for a black man in his 60s.
For the role of the architect of the AI programme, they are asking to see non-binary actors.
The head of security at this top-secret time travelling programme will be a woman called Jenn, while there is a role for “a fearless ex-military operative” called Addison, for which they are seeking women of color.
The guest star role of Naomi asks for an open-ethnicity woman in her 30s.

EXCLUSIVE: Ernie Hudson has been tapped as a lead opposite Raymond Lee in NBC’s hourlong pilot Quantum Leap, a reboot of the beloved 1990s sci-fi drama.
Hudson portrays Herbert “Magic” Williams, a Vietnam veteran and head of the time travel project at Quantum Leap. Using a bit of politicking and his military know-how to keep the Pentagon at bay, Magic buys the team some time to rescue Ben but expects answers once he’s back.

Ernie Hudson sold me on this...he's a really good actor that never quite got his due (because people - and casting directors too, most likely - only ever saw him as Winston).

I would be really surprised if this doesn't get picked up to series.

“Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. At Ben’s side throughout his leaps is Addison (Caitlin Bassett), who appears in the form of a hologram only Ben can see and hear. She’s a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job.
At the helm of the highly confidential operation is Herbert “Magic” Williams (Ernie Hudson), a no-nonsense career military man who has to answer to his bosses who won’t be happy once they learn about the breach of protocol. The rest of the team at headquarters includes Ian Wright (Mason Alexander Park), who runs the Artificial Intelligence unit “Ziggy,” and Jenn Chou (Nanrisa Lee), who heads up digital security for the project.
