I have a feeling the structure of the show would be quite different from the original.
I'm surprised it's taken them this long.

Im not sure I watched when it was live, or if I did I don’t really recall. However, I watched the series about 15 years ago and remember liking those episodes the most. I guess because they started to introduce some mythology and the idea there were other forces at place. Of course that was divergent from the episodic format of tv at that time.
I’d watch, but much like Dr. Who, I think it would be best served to make references to what came before instead of making it all about the original. Leave some mystery and sprinkle in some elements as the show tells its own story.

In my opinion, yes, they are. But over the years I feel like I've read a lot of people not liking the final season as much because of him leaping into famous people and stuff. I don't know, I enjoy them a lot. But as much as I enjoy the final episode, I do get why people didn't like it.

They should go on a mission to bring Sam home, and they succeed, but somebody else gets stuck in time as a result. Sam can then fill the Al role for the new kid.

Bakula in the Al Calavicci role, mentoring a new leaper? Maybe there will be an evil leaper.
I'm surprised they still ordered a pilot, after doing nothing for two years.

And the Lee Harvey Oswald episode is probably my favorite of the series.
Overall, if I had one complaint about the show is that they spent too much time in the civil rights era 1960s. I know Sam could only leap within his lifetime but I thought they could have explored a few more moments in time a little more thoroughly.

Raises the question...I imagine the new lead's lifetime would be the 80s and later? Maybe 70s. Which isn't as interesting, at least on paper. That is if they stick with the leaping within your own lifetime rule. The show only broke it twice, I think, with the Civil War and when Sam and Al switched places. But they gave an explanation both times.

I'm down for a reboot of this show but damn I wish it had come when Stockwell was still with us. Though, granted, Al's side of the story at least got some closure with Sam fixing his marriage and, presumably, he now was never on the project to be begin with. There's an alternate European ending of the final episode Mirror Image that shows Al with his family in a photograph.
I've always thought a return for the show could be Sam's daughter Sammy Jo (from the Trilogy episodes) could discover Sam as her father and her and Donna (Sam's wife) could work to bring him back.

Maybe, if they end up saving Sam, they’ll still be stuck in Sam’s timeline. Either that or eliminate the whole “only able to jump within your own lifetime” stuff. But then you’d have people complaining that they never jump into caveman times.

My big fear now is that this thread has now spent more time spitballing the logistics of the reboot than the creative team writing the pilot.

Just out of the top of my head and those are mostly American events. There a probably countless world events, which can make for a good episode. They had a lot of smaller, personal stories two. I don't think the era would be a problem.

Agreed, while the 50s/60s/70s were a pivotal Era to explore, it's not like every episode was Stephen King's 11/22/63.

Sam in the Al role seems like a no brainer.

Ooh! If they could do the 80s, they could have some series crossover. What about an episode where the new Leaper has to interact with a story from the original series! Sam rights something while this Leaper engages Sam and also rights this other wrong.

Some Back to the Future 2-esque episodes could be fun.

Yeah I have mixed emotions. Love the show but have doubts this could be done well. But, if Bakula is involved, that gives me hope.

The series finale was kind of a colossal fuck up for the show runners and the network that I hope they’re able to fix the ending of the original show at the beginning of the new series. Put right what once went wrong, if you will.

I didn’t know Helen Shaver was a director now. I always had a crush on her.

Yeah Helen Shaver has been directing TV for over 20 years. I remember she was directing episodes of Poltergeist the legacy that she also starred in.
