Had to google that it premiered in 2000. Had it in my head as a 90s show. But yeah, The Wire would be in the top ten.

How many tv/media/holodeck viewers in the year 2099 will be aware of something like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Games of Thrones, etc .... ? (ie. Besides a tv / film / media historian).

Will anything --movies, tv shows, music, sports, video games-- that people are talking about today be of interest to people 80 years from now, or even 30 years from now?

Maybe Oldboy should add SO FAR to his thread title, or we can go with the old show business adage: you buy the premise and you buy the bit.
I still watch movies from the 30's and 40's.

Yea I know, that is just my opinion of the show. I enjoyed it alot but thought it got stale for a bit at the end of the third season/beginning of 4th. I think it would have helped to cut the last season to 13 episodes like seasons 2 and 3. I feel the same way about the Good Place that I'm about to finish tonight. I think it is clever how they kept it going, but end of the third/beginning of the 4th just have too many rehashed bits. Overall I enjoyed both series but I wouldn't call them the best.

I never could find it on DVD except for S1.

It was an excellent underrated show.

Midnight Mass is currently my favorite. I just finished a second viewing of it and there's not a single thing I'd change. To me, trying to define 'the best' of a given art form is a fool's errand, so I'm just going with what I'd pick today if someone said I could only ever rewatch a single series from the past ~21 years.

Lots of good picks here, and I'd like to add Watchmen to the list.

The Wire started in 2002.

And even though The Wire is the only correct answer, shame on everyone for not yet mentioning the Americans.

So do I, but I don't believe there is enough general interest, even at this site, that I could start a thread about The Best Years of Our Lives and generate a lot of discussion.
My point is that this thread is just starting a discussion, so let it happen. Why mock the premise?

Still gotta go with Friday Night Lights. IMO, the first season is the best single season of TV.

No, it's not really a better question. Some of these definitely will be remembered even then as classics.

People still read Shakespeare, still listen to Bach, and still watch I Love Lucy.

Re: Best seriesí in the 21st century?

There are obviously some amazing shows listed already with tons of pedigree (Breaking Bad, GoT, Firefly, Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, Lost, etc) but I'm going to go with rewatchability so I think my choice is going to be:

Chuck. The show is just so damn re-wawtchable. I'm currently in the middle of my fifth rewatch. Perfect cast, there's not a dud in the bunch and it just has that perfect blend of humor, action and charm. It's a shame it wasn't more popular than it was.

Honorable mentions (that aren't already mentioned): Arrested Development & Veronica Mars

Re: Best seriesí in the 21st century?

I love Chuck and have watched the entire series so many times I have lost count. I would put Chuck as my second favorite behind Fringe.

Fringe
Chuck
Firefly
Grimm
Eureka
Warehouse 13
12 Monkeys
Continuum

Ooh I love 12 Monkeys. That one was really ignored unfortunately.

I'll have to take a look at Chuck, never seen one episode.

Re: Best seriesí in the 21st century?

Grimm is one of my recent favorites. Started as a standard procedural drama with a twist, which turned into full serialized drama. And I love serial dramas.

I'll have to check that out instead of doing another Farscape rewatch on Prime.

Re: Best seriesí in the 21st century?

American Dreams is a highly underrated and yeah mostly forgotten show. I have the season 1 DVD, but unfortunately it didn't sell well enough for Universal to continue making them.

and you can't find it legally streaming anywhere either. Brittany Snow and Vanessa Lengies were perfectly cast playing teenages in the 60s.

I managed to acquire seasons 2 and 3 via an "unofficial" DVD set from iOffer a few years ago. But, I'd rather have an official version, which probably will never happen.

Re: Best seriesí in the 21st century?

My super power is that I can re-watch TV shows a ridiculous number of times without tiring of them. Yeah, its a crappy super power.
Game of Thrones: First four seasons at least 6 times. The sets, lighting(WOW), scripts and acting are all top notch.

Friday Night Lights
Fringe
Downton Abbey
The Expanse
Deadwood
Halt and Catch Fire

Guilty pleasures:
Everwood
Black Sails
Chuck

The first half of the first season is a little rough, but once it really gets rolling, there's so much to appreciate. I pick up something new every time I watch it.
