Twisted Metal (Peacock) -- based on the video game -- S: Mackie
Anthony Mackie has signed on for the lead role in the “Twisted Metal” live-action series currently in the works at Sony Pictures Television, Variety has confirmed.
Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are developing the series, which is based on the “Twisted Metal” vehicular combat games, the first of which was released in 1995. It was originally reported in 2019 that Sony was interested in developing a series based on the games.
The new series, which was first announced as being in development in February, is described as an action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind the “Deadpool” films and “Zombieland.”
The show is about motor-mouthed outsider John Doe (Mackie) who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.

Sounds more like Mad Max.

I wonder how far out there they are going to go. The games have some extremely fantastical characters and cars. I'm guessing not too crazy, with the plot being centered around transporting a package. I only played 1&2 along with Black.

Muh childhood! I didn't know this was being made.
Not necessarily post-apocalyptic. More dystopian. The game pretty much laid out the story with Calypso, the tournament, and each character's backstory.

I feel like every Peacock show is created during a cocaine binge.
We now have an adaptation of a long dead game series, one about a time traveling cenote at a Mexican resort, formerly had a show about middle age women remaking their girl band, human lie detector, a show about killing snakes in Florida, and a Templar nun on a quest to destroy an omnipotent AI.
And you know, I'm here for it all

Watched the first episode 101 "Wludrv" and it's Mackie doing his best Will "Oh Hell Naw" Smith impression against a violent Transporter meets the later Fast and Furious films over the top driving.
Never played the game so not sure if there's a story it's following or not.

The story is that Calypso is a supernatural demonic CEO who takes souls and grants wishes to the winner of the tournament, often the way a djinn would. There’s a mix of good guys and bad guys with their own story. The stories became more cinematic as time went on with sequels.
I’ll resubscribe to Peacock to watch this. I don’t see how they could mess it up. Maybe lower budget than it could be. I don’t see how Mackie adding some energy could hurt it.
I grew up playing the first two games a lot. If nothing else, there will be some nostalgia in seeing the cars and characters.

Looks cool. Will watch.
But no Calypso and no tournament? Or maybe they're holding back details.

I have never played the game, but that latest trailer does make me want to watch. Also, love that it stars Neve Campbell and Stephanie Beatriz.
