Spoiler:
He kind of was a slobbering, charmless whiner after Shadar Logoth until he got healed

Was just going through Wikipedia entries for the books, didn't remember it taking till Book 3 for Mat to be healed... that has to move up to this season right?

That just made me picture the writer’s room, with someone saying
Spoiler:
what if to heal Mat, the Aes Sedai have to put him in a different body?

Hopefully that hypothetical person was laughed out of the room.

As for “purists” - I never get that. Just go read the books again. I’m a big fan of the series but I know this is an adaptation. It would have to be the longest series in history to fit everything in.

PS. Nyaneve somehow has RBF in the books too, so it works here She’s dead-on for her character.
There is at least 1 major flashback in Season 1. Whether they do the flashback of the prologue or not is unknown
Spoiler:
but they have cast LT so it is quite possible as the Dragon won't hear his voice for a while yet

Just finished the newest episode (episode 6 is live) and it was ok. Looks like the final episodes will have to REALLY make up for the lack of action in the middle of the series so far. Here's hoping it finishes strong since I am still interested.

I have to say that the scene in the city when they’re on the terrace was one of the best looking pictures I’ve seen on my Vizio (it was in HDR10+).

That opening scene was intense. I'm glad we got the answer to who the dragon was and didn't have to wait for multiple seasons.

The arguing/fighting scene with the Two Rivers crew drove me nuts. Too much CW teen angst for my liking, but loved the reveal of the baby being born on Dragonmount and Tam's fever mutterings. The Aiel are going to be so badass!

Yeah the stuff that is good is a grand slam, but then there's the teen drama stuff.

Very curious how the finale plays out especially with Mat not there.

I hope they do the cold open/come back to later device they used for Rand's birth next week with the prologue.

Loved ep 7. The opening fight was fantastic. I'm not sure what happen to the troll after they came out of the gate. I didn't notice anything odd with the actor playing Mat leaving. If I didn't know he left I would have thought this is always how the show would go in story.

Loved the opening scene as well. Best of the series so far.

I couldn’t follow some of the discussion previously. Was Mat recast before episodes aired, or you’re saying he was recast next time (?) we see him it’ll be somebody else?

I actually thought it was Mat or that minstrel who was following them in the darkness.

I rolled my eyes so hard when wolf man said he thought he saw the old trader, only for the other one to say, “Oh - that’s not him. Everybody died.” With everything you’ve seen; 1) how are you so dismissive, and 2) you can’t just walk around the corner to find out. Especially since it was implied he came through the gate.

And if "everybody died" who were all those villagers that saw them off when they left?

At least they didn't make someone else the Dragon. One of the few things that tracks with the books. The whole it can be anyone of you or a 5-headed Dragon was sheer nonsense. The Dragon has to be male because of the taint on Saidin that causes male channelers to go mad. A female channeling Saidar would not be a danger.

WoT filming was halted like 3 times. When they came back to film episodes 7 and 8, Barney did not come back and also completely scrubbed all social media. It has not been revealed why. So they wrote him out of the final two episodes and unless they repurpose some footage from the Tar Valon episdoes I think the next time we see Mat it will be Donnal. I get the decision but I think they could have gotten away with just recasting him for the last 2 episodes. It will be jarring at first regardless of when it happens. They could have shaved him and used the healing to explain away a little of the different appearance.

Not sure what will happen in Ep 8. They are pretty far off the rails and many expected them to make changes to the Eye anyway. This was actually one of my least favorite episodes as some of the changes they made will have far reaching implications I dont think were necessary.

I suspect Season 2 will have a big uptick in quality. The Book is more TV adaptable to start and pretty straightforward, and they clearly are settling in as the episodes go on.

The fact is that they are going to have to HACK major stuff out of these books to adapt for television. You'd need like 30+ seasons to cover everything and they aren't going to do that. They can't even be planning 14 seasons to go with the 14 books.

I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped entire books and basically hit the highlights with only a fraction of the same relationships.

Yes, but there are some plotlines that last multiple books that can be excised with literally no impact on the overall arc of the show.

Was it just me or did the season finale feel rushed to anyone else?

I've seen it brought up more than once. Curious, Why is casting more unknown actors matter at all? Skill, talent?

I think it's one of those things I do not care about. Sure I can like an actor in a given roll and once they are set I want them to likely play that character. I'm watching a show or movie for the concept and story.

I thought that was a great first season, much better than I was expecting. I didn’t like how Foundation was adapted and thought this would be similarly disappointing. I ended up liking this even more than The Witcher.

Skill and experience matters. Also, when you're spending $10 million an episode, you can hire better experienced actors. Sometimes you strike gold with unknown actors. Anya Chalotra (Yennefer on The Witcher) was an unknown and she's been fantastic. You couldn't say that of any of the 5 potential dragons on this show are as talented or show promise like Chalotra has on The Witcher. Sometimes shows cast unknown actors just for the sake of it and to save money. I think it's one of the biggest flaws of this series. Game of Thrones had some unknown actors, but I feel like they nailed casting Kit Haringtion, Emilia Clake, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams. It's just my opinion, but I don't see Madeline Madden, Zoe Robbins, Josha Stradowski, or Marcus Rutherford in the same league as Chalotra and the Thrones cast, but they have time to grow and get better. Maybe they will surprise me.

That final scene of yesterday's episode was fucked up.

I enjoyed the season.

As someone who's read the entire series more than once, there's stuff I like and some I don't. In general though I'm happy and just really excited to see this in live action. Hopefully Amazon will allow it to get the planned 8 seasons.
