Maybe skip over series 13 and just watch the two specials, since I found those entertaining and they're both relatively self-contained.

Really brining episode. I agree it felt like an old classic Who episode.
I enjoyed Dan in the Flux, but he pretty much has nothing to do here. I wonder if he’ll stay through for the new Dr. I hope Yaz goes regardless. She’s had a few good moments, but is well overstayed. If anybody should have stayed it was Graham.
The trailer seems to bring a lot of elements from the last season and the Flux back, so hopefully the closeout will be on par with the quality of the Flux.
Without spoilers, I don’t think anybody has been announced. Is the new Dr not always introduced at the end of the last Dr’s ep? I guess it doesn’t air until the fall (?), but assume it’s all in the bag.

Might be an interesting change to hold off on the announcement and it is seen on screen at the regeneration but I gather they will drop the name in the summer.

The announcement of who plays the new Doctor has always been before the finale episode/special of the last since the revival in 2005. I think it's largely because it's too big a thing to keep secret. The actor is going to have to start turning down offers for other shows/films, and the show is going to have to start pre-production on the next series, which means costuming, promotional materials, cast readings, etc. Better to control the release of info via an announcement instead of via a leak.
I personally only recall Capaldi and Jodi getting their own announcement special. I guess Matt Smith was announced on an episode of Doctor Who Confidential, but that didn't air here in the US.
And of course, in-show they've put the regeneration at the end of the last actor's last episode/special since the revival, which means the new Doctor first appears at the end of that episode, instead of having the previous actor come back for the new series to just regenerate in the first episode. However, Capaldi, or at least his eyebrows, did get a cameo one special earlier in Day of the Doctor. Also, if you go back to older Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee first played the Third Doctor at the beginning of Series 7 (the regeneration wasn't shown on-screen, the first and only time due to 8 getting a regeneration scene in a short webisode decades later), the regeneration of 6th to 7th was in the first episode of the 24th season (and Colin Baker declined to come back to film it), and the regeneration of 7th to 8th was in the 1996 TV movie.

Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the star of Doctor Who, the BBC has announced.
The 29-year-old will become the 14th Time Lord on the popular science fiction show, and the first non-white actor to play the lead role.
Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, is best known for starring in Netflix's sitcom Sex Education.
He said he was "deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared".
He added: "This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.
"I will endeavour my upmost to do the same."
Showrunner Russell T Davies said Gatwa "dazzled us" in his audition.
"Sometimes talent walks through the door and it's so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars," Davies said.
The Queer As Folk and It's A Sin writer is returning as the programme's showrunner after departing the show in 2009.

Just watched an interview with him and he seems to have a good energy but I haven’t seen any of his actual work yet.
With RTD back I think this will be good and not feel like stunt casting (which unfortunately Jodie felt like because Chibnall let her down with weak writing).

I don't know much about Ncuti (heck, I don't even know how to pronounce his name!) but I've heard good things about him and have full trust in RTD back at the helm, so I'm expecting we're in for some fun.

A cool choice, and they really couldn’t go back to a white guy at the moment. More than anything I’m waiting for the writer regeneration because the terrible scripts have chased me away from watching much of Jodie’s Doctor after the first season or so. I’d like to be excited by the show again.

I suspect women left it in droves after they replaced Matt Smith with a grumpy old bastard -- I used to see women wearing Doctor Who shirts quite a bit in public, and those dried up as soon as Capaldi was announced.
Hopefully the new Who has the quirky charm that Tennant and Smith had that concealed a serious don't-fuck-with-me badass vibe.

I've been watching Sex Education from the start and go hot and cold on his character. He does seem to be a decent actor and he has something of a manic energy on SE so he has the potential to bring some youth and vigor to the role. That said I loved Jodie W in a number of other roles and never got into her as the doctor but I do consider myself a casual fan.

C'mon, give Gizmo a break. How would you feel if all your life people on TV looked like you and had the same gender, sexual orientation, and skin color as you and then all of a sudden you see people of other genders and races who don't look like you on screen? They have different upbringing, different feelings and wants and needs right, so how can he relate to them and enjoy these shows? If only Fox News had a scripted channel, amirite Gizzy?

Also important to remember that Russel T Davies made Queer as Folk before he rebooted Doctor Who, and made It's a Sin during his hiatus from the show.
