Yep Jean is killin' it on HBO. I had no interest in "Hacks" until I saw Jean was in it.

Yeah, I'm down for this, especially with Jean in it.

I watched both episodes today. Jean Smart is great, but I’m not liking Hannah Einbinder’s Ava. Who doesn’t research the comedian that they have an opportunity to write for, especially when you can’t find any other work? She had a whole flight to research her.... I’ll keep watching since there’s not many new comedies to watch right now, but I was a little underwhelmed.

It seems like it's typical of HBO to give you unlikeable characters as series leads, -as if it's their brand.

I took that as Ava is her own worst enemy. I mean she fucks up all her gigs so this was not out of character.

I enjoyed it. Jean is great at playing asshole characters that you still love or end up loving at some point. This Ava is a hot mess so it is fun to watch her fuck up her life and not get why her life's a mess. Looking forward to these two coming together. I'm also liking her contentious relationship with the casino owner.

The Ava actress hasn’t been in much but she reminds me of someone and I just can’t place it.

Her mannerisms and speach pattern is exactly like someone just can’t figure it out.

Her Mom is Laraine Newman.

Whotony, I know exactly what you mean. I feel like I've seen her before, even though I haven't. And it was driving me crazy who she reminded me of. I still don't know. She looks or acts nothing like her mom.

ThaNks I didn’t know she was Newman’s daughter but like Day mentioned she is nothing like her mom.

There is an actress out there that is very similar but who is it?

Didn't know I wanted to see Smart and Einbinder "hook up"...but I'm into it.

The takedown of the douche stand-up in episode 8 was great.

I've been really enjoying this overall.

She kind of reminds me of a young Molly Parker.

Her voice is similiar to Julia Stiles

It might just be her mom.

After finding that info out in here and thinking bout it, just could be that she sounds and has similar sound and physical gestures to her mom.

I watched the first two episodes last night. Thought it was pretty good. Bummed out that they aren't filming it in Las Vegas. How hard/expensive could it have been to shoot a Vegas-based series there? It looks like Smart's mansion is in Malibu. There are a couple of shots of cars driving down the Strip, but otherwise I don't think there is any Vegas footage. Maybe the Casino interior stuff was shot in Vegas, I am not sure.

I would assume it was much easier and cost effective to film on a soundstage and locations in and around Los Angeles during a pandemic.

That was fun. I assume some of the overall plot points mirror Joan Rivers' life. Lots of good stuff. My wife isn't a big fan of these dark comedies, but she really enjoyed this. Jean Smart is amazing. I loved Jimmy and his assistant.

How is this dark comedy?

Deftones 06-13-21 06:03 PM

re: Hacks (HBO Max) - S: Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder - premieres 5/13/21

I guess that is subjective, but the topics like say, I don't know, spending an entire day with a guy, screwing him, then he jumps out a window to his death? But there are still comedic elements to it like her walking into the room and seeing where he jumped and her in the hallway after? Then she jokes about it on two different occasions with different characters? I could go on if you wish.

Sure that is a good example and I still have the last four eps to watch but that seems like the only instance so far.

Otherwise it’s just a really good half hour comedy. Even sitcoms have death in them but aren’t refers to as dark comedy.

Since you haven't watched it all there is sort of no point in arguing it isn't a dark comedy, imho. You certainly can have your opinion that it isn't, but there are several themes in there that make it seem like it is to me. And several references to my example that you haven't even seen yet. And yes, several comedies have dealt with death. But the manner in which this was dealt with was very dark, yet also had comedy around it. Plus more you haven't seen yet.
