Mira Furlan (Babylon 5, Lost) 1955-2021

Sad news to report to B5 fans, as Joe Straczynski confirmed tonight that Mira Furlan (Delenn) has passed away..

Mira Furlan (Babylon 5, Lost) 1955-2021

Yet another Babylon 5 actor has passed away far too young.

Mira Furlan, Delenn on Babylon 5, passed away on the 20th. Apparently, her health had been failing for a while. She was only 65.

She came from war torn Yugoslavia, often risking her life traveling to do stage plays. She brought a unique voice to Babylon 5 as Delenn, and was an amazing part of the cast.

After B5 she had a recurring role on Lost.

This is yet another shocking, premature death for a Babylon 5 cast member. Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs, Michael O'Hare, Jeff Conaway, Jerry Doyle, and Stephen Furst have all passed away, most by the age of 60. (Furst was the oldest up to now, passing away at 63.)

For a series that isn't that freaking old, the cast has been completely decimated.

Damn, were the costumes and makeup for the show made out of lead and asbestos?

You do realize that's a low res picture, right?

Besides, a memorial thread is hardly the time and place to take a shot at the production values of a show.

I wasn't making fun of the production values of the show. I am a huge fan of B5. It was more a comment about how the actors all seem to be dying so young.

I never really watched Babylon 5, but it’s definitely an odd trend that so many of the cast members have passed away relatively young.

It does make you wonder a bit about it being something related to conditions on the set when it’s multiple cast members passing.

Ahh.. Got it. My bad on the misunderstanding.

Well, Andreas Katsulas smoked himself to death. Jerry Doyle drank himself to death. Jeff Conaway had drug problems (brought on initially by a back injury and an addiction to painkillers). Stephen Furst had diabetes. Richard Biggs had a heart defect.

Nothing related to the show or production, just REALLY bad life decisions or bad luck.

From Bruce Boxleitner...

Yesterday, I was brought to my knees.

She was one-of-a-kind. Although she had endured much heartache in her life, she always seemed to find a place in her heart for others and was especially passionate about causes.

She was a living contradiction: a beautiful, graceful, compassionate soul with a strong, fierce, commanding courage. My wife has always described her as “angelic.” I can’t think of a better description in one word. Her welcoming aura was felt by anyone who had the privilege of being near her.

We have lost a light in our galaxy, but another has gained one. I will miss our talks, our laughs, our deep discussions about Hollywood and life. I will miss our dinners and trips abroad. I will miss the way her eyes sparkled when she smiled. I will miss her captivating voice and contagious laughter. I will miss sharing with her one of the most gratifying experiences of my life: the relationship between Sheridan and Delenn.

I will miss her.

Bruce

And Tim Choate (Zathras) died in a motorcycle accident I think. Just tragic.

It's really unsettling when you consider that the show has had, over its run, seventeen members in its main cast, and seven of them have died young.

Compare that with Star Trek, which had three shows in same 90s time period, and they have only lost one main cast member, Rene Auberjonois, at age eighty.

Two as far as I know for 90s Star Trek. Aron Eisenberg who played Nog died in 2019. He was 50.

I'm familiar with her work from lost but I still have not been able to get to B5. Is it streaming on any channel? RIP.

Edit: Now that I am thinking about it the actor who played Worf's son died as well. Jon Paul Steuer.

But of Star Trek TNG, DSY, and VOY, only 1 has died from the main cast. Nog wasn't part of the main cast. He was a recurring character.

And, either way, the point stands. B5 has had horrible luck with it's main cast members dying prematurely. It's really very depressing.

As far as the show streaming, it actually starts on HBO Max tomorrow. So you can start it then! ;)

(Just remember, the first season is the weakest, and doesn't match up, quality wise, to seasons 2-4. Seasons 3 & 4 are the show at it's peak, just amazing stuff - but it won't make nearly as much sense without you watching the first two seasons before you watch seasons 3 & 4.)

Are the movies going to be part of HBO Max as well? That's great news. My friend and I were just discussing that it's been a while since we watched the show so I was thinking of doing that again.

Whenever I do a rewatch, I usually skip season 1. Too tedious to watch on a second and subsequent viewings.

On such rewatches, I start with the "In The Beginning" movie and go straight into season 2. I stop at the end of season 4, and don't bother with season 5.

Nevertheless if one has not watched this show before, one should first start with The Gathering movie and then into season 1.

Re: Mira Furlan (Babylon 5, Lost) 1955-2021

There are still a number of season one episodes that need to be watched because they set up things that will pay off in later seasons.

But at least half of them are skippable.

They remastered the show! I just (re)purchased it on iTunes so I have it forever. It looks a lot better than the DVD set.
