  • Selma Diamond was 63 when the series started in 1984 and died a year later. She was in 36 episodes.
  • Florence Halop was 62 when she replaced Selma in 1985 and died within a year. She was only in 22 episodes.
Egads. They both seemed like they were in their eighties.

Smoking will do that. Both actresses were heavy smokers and both died of lung cancer.

They were both heavy chain smokers in real life. That probably lead to them looking much older than they were as well as their premature deaths.

I wasn't aware of that, or at least I don't remember it, but it's been years since I've seen the show and hadn't though a lot about it since it was cancelled.

Was the lady that could put an enitre hand in someone's mouth that Dan talked about on the new show a call back to something from the original show?

I tend to dislike mainstream comedies, but liked the original mainly for Harry Anderson. Perhaps nostalgia for that is influencing me, but I was surprised to actually enjoy the first two episodes.

Just watched the first two and was surprisingly entertained. Needs some stronger hands in the writer’s room to even the keel but still fun.

Larroquette was doing a lot of the work to keep it going, but he was doing a dang good job of it.

Enjoyed it about as much as i did the original show which always felt like top of the second tier of sitcoms. Will continue to watch.

I watched a bunch of the original series, but for me the biggest draw for Night Court was always "What else are you going to do in the 30 minutes between Cheers and L.A. Law?".

I watched the first two episodes and dug the nostalgia and Larroquette, and Abby and the prosecutor are cute, but I just found it not funny. The audience laughter after failed jokes just made it worse. I think I’m out.

Heck, Night Court itself needed a couple seasons before they found the right cast and became a good series (subject to opinion, of course—in those days of watching TV in real time, we did sit through slot fillers). That’s why it was so annoying in the DVD era that they released one season and then nothing for a long time. That said, I guess it’s kinda weird for me to tap out already, but there are way too many entertainment options for me to keep watching and hope this gets better. I’ll probably check back later.

The first 2 episodes were awful. Didn't laugh once.

Dammit I really wanted to like this remake. I love John and I really liked Melissa from Big Bang. It's not working for me. I'm with Red Dog.. I didn't laugh once. The jokes all seem forced and some lay an awful lot of pipe to get to. I hope it gets better because I don't think it can get worse.

Agreed. Both my wife and I found them to be hard to watch, even though both of us want the show to succeed. I'll give the 3rd episode a watch this weekend but that's it for me if it's not noticeably better.

When The Muppet Movie came out in 1979, there was some criticism from Christian conservatives that the portrayal of inter-species romance was inappropriate for children.

So how do Kermit and Miss Piggy do it? Does she root around in his cloaca?

The 3rd episode was MUCH better than the first two, but still not very good.

Did Harry/Abby's office get bigger? I don't remember there being a table in the office and the camera going back as far as it did.

I’m rewatching the original on FreeVee, that table is in the office. I’ll chalk it up to sitcom physics where the room is as big as needed for the scene.

You're right. I just search some clips on Youtube and saw the edge of the table as the camera went from the front door to Harry's desk.
Now I don't remember if anyone has ever sat at the table (or if they did, it was very rare) - which may be why I didn't remember the table in the first place.

I am in the middle of season 2 and watched an episode where they were playing poker at the table
