SNL 11/07/20 (S46E06) -- H: Dave Chappelle, MG: The Foo Fighters

Dave C. and Dave G.

This should be good!

Maybe the longest and perhaps the darkest monologue in SNL History. And three N words isn’t going to go over well tomorrow.

That monologue was great, funny how he was trying to retract from saying some of the things he wanted to say. It must be the open air tv thing.

That was pretty awkward and a bit of a trainwreck. Some jokes definitely didn't land and he was too preachy.

"Thank you and good night!" You kinda forgot something.

I still love the Foo Fighters. Such a solid rock band.

It was appropriate since we barely saw him the rest of the episode

I thought the monologue was good in parts and really long but I was surprised how he was only in two sketches total.

Maybe talking about Freddie Mercury was over the line

Dave smoking during the monologue bothered me more than anything else. Is he such a big chain smoker that he can’t go 10mins without a smoke?

Yes. Have you seen his stand up?

I dont see what was so great about that monologue? People are saying it was one of the best in SNL history. Had a few funny moments but was just went on way too long.

Was that the longest monologue in SNL?

For all of the comedians who performed stand-up in their SNL monologues - George Carlin, Steve Martin, Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, Bill Burr, and even Dave Chappelle in 2016 - This one definitely fees like it surpasses all of them, at least in length of time.

You can't compare what Chappelle is doing with ANY other monologues in SNL history.

Even for the shows in the wake of 9/11, Reese Witherspoon and Drew Barrymore were not expected to say something especially meaningful about the state of the nation.

This is the second time Chappelle has been brought on to deliver a comedy monologue that is also (essentially) functioning as a State of the Union address . . . and the election was just decided 12 hours before he performed for chrissakes!

If you watched Letterman's Netflix interview with Chappelle, you saw David L express the high esteem the comedy world has for Dave C as a social commentator and truth-teller.

I'm not saying every word of the monologue was a nugget of golden wisdom or a great laugh, but let's be honest about the situation and fairly say that Chappelle did a great job. Expectations for what he would say were through the roof.

And let's be even more honest. As relieved as so many people were to have Biden declared winner yesterday, this country is still seriously fucked up.

The monologue was just over 16 minutes

RE: The monologue length.

Am I waxing nostalgic here, or didn't it used to be cold open-cast announcement-monologue-fake commercial-2 skits-musical guest-Weekend Update, and Weekend Update happened at midnight or just a little afterwards?

Last night's WU ended at 12:37

There used to be a mindset that if you were tired, you went to sleep right after WU. It was only diehards that made it till 1AM, hence the reputation of really bad sketches the last 2/3 of the show. Now if you make it through Weekend Update, you're pretty much in it till 1 anyway.

My recollection is that there was a good stretch where the first performance by the musical would always start 11:55 to Midnight and they would get in another post-WU sketch by 12:30.

I used to work on Sunday mornings and that was my tune out time. I guess they have figured out that people do tune out after WU ends, and they want to push that.

Didn't Richard Pryor do a monologue? I could have sworn he did. Maybe I'm mistaken.

I assume a lot of people DVR it and watch it the next morning. That's what I do. It's perfect filler while I'm waiting for NFL to start.

I fell asleep during the FSU/ND game around 10-ish. I woke up right after the field-storming and padded my recording.

Dave's monologue was long and kind of weird.

But I loved the Aunt Jemima / Uncle Ben's bit.

Pryor's monologue was stand-up from his act: bits about being drunk and taking acid, nothing topical.

I thought maybe he was in trouble with Lorne if he appears only in one or two sketches

This had to have been planned, though, if he was in trouble with Lorne because he went off on live tv during the monologue I doubt we'd have seen him for that late sketch, plus there are already so many moving pieces that removing his sketches would be more trouble than it's worth. That must have been by design, but man I thought it was odd. I guess some of these sketches they have in their back pocket or they keep around to shoehorn the less comedic guests into. They weren't bad, just retreading old ground (like the Super Mario one... still made me laugh though).

I think I remember when Kate Winslet hosted that she was only appeared in 3 sketches herself. So it happens - unless I'm not remembering correctly.

Dave's opening monologue was awesome. Although I watched about half of the episode and for the life of me I cannot fathom what this show has become. I know it's still popular, but nothing was even remotely entertaining for me. Even the whole firing of Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and the All State guy wasn't really good, even with Chappelle.

Just watched it on Youtube, and I thought the monologue was awesome. To me, 16 minutes of Chappelle is better than more time for random SNL skits.
