SNL 10/31/20 (S46E05) -- H: John Mulaney, MG: The Strokes

John Mulaney is responsible of the pandemic... or so he says.

Season 46 (2020-2021)

Wow no comments yet? Mulaney is such a pro. Great monologue. Glad they did another Broadway musical even if this was the worst of the bunch. I did like “Three Days More” at least.

Don’t really know the band but they were pretty good. Nice to have a solid rock act for a change.

Chapelle next week.

You don't know the Strokes? They've been around for over 20 years. You definitely need to check their work out. They're great. I felt like this was a solid show overall. And yes, Mulaney is a pro. He was great in the monologue and every skit he was in. Once again Cecily Strong was no where to be found. Even Aidy Bryant didn't have a 5 second cameo this week. I get that they are doing other shows. But this is the first time I can recall when "SNL" main cast members are noticeably absent for weeks working on other projects. And find it odd they are in the opening credits when they're not even on the show that particular week.

Edit: Just one of the many great Strokes songs (IMO). Lead singer Julian Casablancas also did a really solid solo album and also formed a side band too call the Voidz.

Mulaney back with the usual musical sketch and the meme sketch at the end.

Admit it Kyle Mooney is good doing Baby Yoda.

I thought this was 2020 and not 2002 or 2003 when the Strokes were the flavor of the month?

Maybe they have their fans but not a big following anymore like they did in those years or any songs that have become huge hits since 2003.

You do realize you don't need hits to still have a big following right? They still headline festivals and can sell out arenas.

I'm a big Mulaney fan and thought he was great as usual. Solid rock band as a guest too. First Bill Burr/Jack White and now this, I'm liking this season so far.

Re: SNL 10/31/20 (S46E05) -- H: John Mulaney, MG: The Strokes

Another meh episode.

They seems be giving the new/newer cast members the majority of skit-time. As mentioned, Strong/Bryant aren't around... but Mikey Day was only in the cold opening and another skit, while Moffat was only in the musical. I don't think I've ever seen the show rely on a smaller amount of cast members - especially the newer lesser-known ones.

Carrey seems to have toned down his Biden impersonation which makes it better.
I never understand when they do sketches that requires the character to read from a book, and the cast member still winds up reading from the teleprompter. Why not just have the script and stage directions, etc. in the book so it looks more natural - because he'd look like he was actually reading?

I thought SNL has always been some kind of trial by fire environment where you pitch sketches and if it gets on the show, great, if it doesn't, you don't get the time. Beyond weekend update characters I can't think of many recurring skits that the newer members have established. I feel like Keenan always gets used because at this point he's pretty versatile and/or he's got a lot of bits.

They're a local band for the SNL crew so that gives them some leverage. Plus probably a good agent to promote their newer album.

That said, I found them lifeless and kinda boring during this. Woulda liked something like Eternal Summer but that wouldn't have played well either (too poppy, weird and long)

I guess this was one of their semi-regular “let’s get super specific about life in NYC” episodes.

And The Strokes are starting to remind me of Cake. Been around forever at this point, and the albums seem to blend into each other after the initial fame.

I’m also starting to wonder what Kate McKinnon’s plans are. It seems like she’s been around too long for her talent level, almost like Bill Hader at the end of his tenure.

Every Mulaney episode is basically "references I don't quite understand about NY."

Yeah I figured as much, considering he loves talking about it. I get the references it’s still kind of funny seeing to what degree of specificity they’ll go.

She reminds me of Dana Carvey, who excels at skit comedy (quirky characters, impressions), but ended up floundering after he left. She does a lot of characters well in five minute skits, but she'll need to make some really good choices after she leaves SNL. She'll have to be very careful with what projects she does; if she's not , then it's a couple of shitty rom-coms, and a bunch of voice work.

Yeah, it was the worst of the bunch. The lobster one was good, and the Bodega and LaGuardia ones were golden, but, at this point, I think they've run out of high profile musicals to parody. I didn't know most of the songs, but thought the idea of the "Diddler on the Roof" was funny, but they didn't really do anything with it.

They are better than the Strokes

If you want music to put on the headphones before you go to bed put on some Strokes songs since they are boring like Rich C said.

McKinnon did Yesterday and Bombshell and maybe will make better decisions than Amy Poehler except for Parks for Rec is now more known for commercials.

Poehler is 50 years old. She was a star on SNL for almost a decade and was the star of her own long-running sitcom. By TV actress standards, she has had a very successful career.

But she is or was a huge talent and should have her own show again or doing more movies.

All I see her now is in those Verizon ads and Tina Fey is MIA except for that Kimmy Schmidt show which just ended.

Re: SNL 10/31/20 (S46E05) -- H: John Mulaney, MG: The Strokes

SNL is booking more rock bands

For a show that in recent years has leaned heavily on very current pop, hip-hop, R&B and alternative, it’s a head-spinning shift of genre and generations. What’s going on?

Obviously, due to COVID, it’s an unprecedented season and an unprecedented time. But not only has rock music has been at a low ebb for most of this century — the White Stripes and the Strokes are the last two galvanizing acts in memory — those three acts don’t even have new music out (although the Strokes’ latest album came out in April).Still, none of the above entirely addresses the “why.” Obviously, lockdown has meant that no one is touring, which complicates matters for many acts — but it has also meant that artists are recording and releasing more studio material than before as well. Couldn’t “SNL” just as easily have called up, say, Ariana Grande or Sam Smith, both of whom dropped new albums last week, instead of Dave Grohl?

“First, she’s not a natural fit with Dave Chappelle as host,” one source tells Variety, adding, “Dave Grohl isn’t really either, but they’re both Daves and they’re both in-your-face, so it works.

“But also,” the source continues, “Jack White, the Strokes and the Foo Fighters turn up, plug in and play — there’s maybe an hour or two of prep. For Ariana or even a Sam Smith, there’s going to be hair and makeup and maybe some big concept to execute — that’s hours of prep and a lot more people involved, and those big productions are much harder to pull off in a pandemic.”

But most of all, both sources agree, the show may well be responding to the roar of the virtual crowd.

“Is this kind of rock music a form of comfort food for a lot of people, at a terrifying moment in history?,” one of them posits. “Maybe.”

Are you familiar with the phrase "Last Fuckable Day?"

Amy was never much in the looks department, and now she is a 50 year old woman with a "stocky" figure.

That's the way it works from what I've read about the show. If a cast member wants more airtime, they need to pitch good sketch ideas/characters to the writers that will make it to air. And yes, versatile cast members like Keenan tend to get used in more sketches.

Also hope that some of the younger viewers see the majesty of Rock, and the impromptu energy of people just playing their instruments instead of the planned and canned lip-synch acts. Who would have thought that Lorne Michaels would turn into Dewey Finn?
