The Expanse (Amazon) -- Season 5 -- Premieres 12/16/20

Season 5 of The Expanse will hit Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, Dec. 16. The news was made official today during the series’ panel at New York Comic Con’s Metaverse. New episodes will drop each Wednesday working up to the season finale on Feb. 3. Watch the trailer above.

Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand. For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System. Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence. Bobbie (Frankie Adams) and Alex (Cas Anvar) confront the collapse of Mars as they chase a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals. Holden (Steven Strait) wrestles with the consequences of his own past with the Protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them. Drummer (Cara Gee), with a new crew, fights to escape who and what she used to be. And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), refusing to be relegated to the sidelines, fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivaled in history.

The 10-episode Amazon Original series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 territories around the globe, and is produced by Alcon Television Group.

Somehow I wasn’t expecting this until next year. I thought they were still filming.

Looks a lot closer to seasons 1-3, as I felt 4 was a departure and felt slower. Maybe it’s because it was largely detached from the solar system plot when they were off world.

I thought 4 was alright. I binged all 4 while I was recovering from back surgery.

Yeah, they're back! Season 4 felt too much like filler.

I didn't understand the dislike of Season 4 other than people being upset that the whole thing was in one place. In which case the preview for Season 5 seems like that will not be the case... so hopefully it does better with fans. Also seems we're getting 3 episodes on day one and then one a week after instead of all of them being dumped on day one for binge consumption. Maybe this format will keep people talking about it a bit.

So was Cas Anvar guilty or what?

Stoked!

I wonder if Jeff Bezos' space dreams had an effect on Amazon's decision to pick this show up?

I didn’t hate season 4, but it was definitely tonally different than 1-3. I haven’t read the books, but it would be my suspicion that S4 was a setup for more to come. Go back to Sol, let things go to crap due to infighting, and then band together against some external threat.

We finally caught up. We started maybe a month ago and just finished S4 tonight. This last season seemed to meander a bit, but finished well and set up some good stuff to come.

I just finished my annual re-watch. Yeah season 4 lagged a bit. Large new cast additions along with poor setting. I knew it was gonna be a rough season when I read the book.

Season 5 should be back to space and our solar system. The novellas are interwoven into the main stories ans season 4 Bobbie story line was rather weak. Season 5 should be 'The Churn' and much more compelling. Unfortunately the backstories steal time away from the main plot.

I just have this dread feeling that Amazon will cancel this before the 9th season. It would be great to have an epic multi-season arc come to a conclusion.

From what I remember, nothing he did was criminal. He's apparently just a giant creep.

I have finished reading all the published novels and novellas. I'm still waiting on the last book, which I believe to have been pushed back to next year. If they stick with the books, as they have done a pretty good job of so far, then this show is going to be insanity. I truly have no idea how they could pull it off, but I would be ecstatic.

Bobbie's S4 plot was a bit of a plod, to be honest. At the beginning, I thought the crew of the Roci were going to pick her up on the way out to the gate and bring her along as a new crewmember.

I like where her plot ended up, but the trip there was too drawn out.

Excited for S5 and happy it's coming this winter. I'm surprised S4 didn't get a bigger backlash. Just as the show's reputation was skyrocketing they released a planet-focused and smallish-seeming season. As dictated by the books apparently, so I'm fine they stuck to it. Here's hoping for more after five.

I've forgotten, what happened to the commandeered Mormon generation ship? That was one of my favorite sci-fi settings ever! The patois of the belters is the kind of thing not many shows could do so well.

If it is true about Bezos, he loves the books and show, so I would like to think they run this to the conclusion if the.

I'm disappointed S4 wasn't available to purchase on iTunes/Vudu/etc like the previous seasons were.

The Nauvoo was sent through the ring and renamed Medina Station. I like the Belter language and Jared Harris is excellent (as always) with the dialect. Is it based on British Colonized South African?

I'm pretty sure they had already filmed the season before the news came out, so we might not know what is going to happen with him until they start filming season six.

Jeff Bezos confirmed today in a company-wide meeting that he's a fan of The Expanse. His endorsement bodes well for the future of the show.
