The Gentlemen (Netflix) - based on the Guy Ritchie film - premieres 3/7/24

EXCLUSIVE: Miramax TV is developing The Gentlemen, a TV series based on the studio’s successful action comedy feature that was written and directed by Guy Ritchie and starred Matthew McConaughey.

Ritchie will write and direct the series, which he will executive produce alongside Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, his fellow producers on the movie.

This makes it a full circle for The Gentlemen, which started off as a TV series pitch before it became a feature. It also continues Miramax’s ramped-up efforts under new Head of Worldwide Television Marc Helwig to mine the company’s extensive film library for IP that can be turned into TV series. The Gentlemen joins the recently announced series adaptation of another Miramax movie with an A-list filmmaker attached, Mimic, directed and exec produced by Paul WS Anderson.

“Miramax Television is thrilled to break new creative ground in our partnership with Guy Ritchie on The Gentlemen,” said Helwig. “One of the most distinctive and prolific filmmakers working today and someone whose creativity I have admired for many years, we couldn’t be more excited to bring the cinematic journey of The Gentlemen forth into the realm of global premium television.”

The Gentlemen movie follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever, it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.

Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Hugh Grant also star in the film, which was released in January 2020 and grossed over $115M at the worldwide box office. Miramax produced the movie, with STX Entertainment distributing in the U.S.

The Gentlemen was a great return to form for Ritchie. But a BIG part of what made it work was the cast.

A TV series could be fun. I could see this being on premium cable or a streaming platform.

The Gentlemen TV series in the works from Guy Ritchie

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is in negotiations for a green light to The Gentlemen, a series adaptation of the 2019 Guy Ritchie movie, sources said. Ritchie co-wrote the pilot script, will direct the first two episodes and will serve as an executive producer on the series, which Miramax TV is producing alongside Moonage in the UK.A series pickup would make it a full circle for The Gentlemen, which started off as a TV series pitch before it became a feature. It also marks a rare foray into television for Ritchie who previously created and co-wrote the 2000 Channel 4 series Stock, Lock… based on his film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. (Ritchie had no creative involvement in the Crackle series Snatch, also based on his movie)

Ritchie executive produces alongside Ivan Atkinson, Marn Davies and Bill Block, his fellow producers on the movie. Marc Helwig executive produces for Miramax TV; Will Gould and Matthew Read for Moonage Pictures.

The movie’s star-studded ensemble cast also included Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Hugh Grant. The Gentlemen was released in January 2020 and grossed over $115M at the worldwide box office. Miramax produced the pic, with STX Entertainment distributing in the U.S.

The Gentlemen TV series adaptation was one of the first projects Helwig put in development after joining Miramax in 2020 as Head of Worldwide Television with the goal of mining the company’s extensive film library for IP that can be turned into TV series.

At Netflix, Miramax TV also has in the works The Henna Artist, a series based on Alka Joshi’s bestselling debut novel, with Freida Pinto attached to star and executive produce and Michael Edelstein executive producing.

“White Lotus” star Theo James smoulders over a glass of liquor in the first images to emerge from Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming series “The Gentlemen.”

Kaya Scodelario (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge”) and Vinnie Jones (“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”) also star in the series, which is loosely based on Ritchie’s 2019 feature starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Strong and Michelle Dockery.

The original cast are not set to return for the show, in which James plays Eddie Horniman, an aristocrat who inherits his estranged family’s estate only to discover it’s home to Europe’s largest weed farm.

Instead James, Scodelario and Jones will be joined by Daniel Ings (“I Hate Suzie”), Joely Richardson (“Nip/Tuck”), Peter Serafinowicz (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”).

“A host of unsavoury characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of Eddie’s operation,” reads the synopsis. “Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.”

In these first look images James is kicking back in a plush armchair located in a posh, mahogany-inlaid room while Scodelario looks every inch the gangster’s moll with a sharp grey suit, red lip and impenetrable stare.

Longtime Ritchie collaborator Vinnie Jones can be seen sipping some tea from an elegant floral cup and saucer set while Ings sports a full-body chicken suit and a shotgun in the grounds of what appears to be a country estate.

Ritchie created, co-wrote and executive produces “The Gentlemen” as well as directing the first two episodes. Matthew Read is also a co-writer.

The series is due to drop on the streaming platform in 2024.
