Away (Netflix) -- S: Hillary Swank, Josh Charles - From EP Jason Katims, Matt Reeves & Ed Zwick - 9/4/20

Away centers on Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission. It is a series about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.
10 episode season. Premieres September 4th.
From the creator of Friday Night Lights, the director of Glory & Courage Under Fire and the director of The Batman.
Edward Zwick directed the Pilot.
This looks really good and has a great creative team behind it. However, it's premiering the same day as season 2 of The Boys, so it may not get much notice.
and how does Netflix keep up cranking out shows like this?

This seems like it is going to be a little too melodramatic for my taste.
Cast and premise looks pretty good, but I have a feeling it is going to be one of those series where every episode is going to have to have someone breaking down. Ill wait for some reviews.

Watched 30 minutes of the first episode so far and not sure how I feel about it.
I love astronomy, so this should be perfect for me. But it seems like I’ve seen everything before in every other space-related TV show and movie.
I didn’t read the plot summary beforehand. After reading it now, I guess I was hoping for more of a thriller instead of a drama.

Zwick's pedigree is in relationship & family dramas, not sci fi, so I expected it to be soapy and it is. Most of Ep2 is in space already so it's not a tempo issue. It's not bad, just very mainstream and predictable, "thirty-something Goes to Mars"... The real topic so far is now much everyone misses everyone being headed for a long mission, and a family scared for Mom because "space is dangerous".

I've watched the first two episodes and am ambivalent at this point. Was hoping for something a bit more original, but when the crew started deploying the solar panels, I thought to myself, "okay, one will have a mechanical failure and they'll have to go out and fix it and have major drama doing so." I'm disappointed at how correct I was.

Not bad, but it really strikes me as a Clint Eastwood-directed film, just cut into ten 50-ish minute pieces.For-sure more soapy than sci-fi\thriller.

I liked the second episode better, though I don't feel like this team of astronauts is very realistic. The story is really pitting them in conflict with each other to heighten the drama. They act very antagonistic with each other (for an astronaut crew), and that runs quite contrary to what I know of real international space travel collaboration. The Chinese woman's 'secret' communications and her readiness to throw out the established chain of command on the ship is kind of cartoonishly villainous. And the botanist? They're sending a guy to Mars who's never even been in space before? They all act like they only know each other a little bit, but they should have been training together for years for a mission like this. Whoever did the psych evals for this crew and approved them to spend 3 years together in a tin can should be fired.
I do like that we see how Swank's husband and daughter are dealing with their wife/mom being away and in danger. Feels like there's more to the story of the 'support crew' member--the woman that is looking after Swank's daughter. We got to see a little of the family and backstory of the Russian astronaut, so I presume we'll find out more about the others' personal stories, too, in time.
The visuals are pretty good, though fairly minimal. I'd like a better view of the ship as a whole and the rotating sections of the ship. One thing that bugs me in space movies that depict zero gravity is when they show someone floating and they kind of bob up and down a little--either in place or as they move after pushing off something. That shouldn't happen. I think I saw a little of that when Swank was moving toward the solar panel. A minor nitpick, but I teach physics and things like that are pet peeves for me, even when I can ignore more significant errors for the sake of storytelling.

Watched the first 3 episodes. Really boring.
The Sean Penn Mars series on Hulu was much better than this. Unfortunately cancelled.

Managed to watch it all, but damn was it slow and the drama extremely forced. Multiple times it's stated they trained 2 years for this trip, yet the entire time the crew just bickers like school children who can't work together for even the smallest of tasks. Ends like they intended for it to get another season for the return, but I figure this show will be canned.

Watching with the wife. It is ok. Hillary Swank bugs me but there's enough here for me to keep watching with my wife.

Finished up last night. Not sure if it actually gets better or I acclimated to the drama, but decided that it's not bad. Less drama and fewer clichés in Season Two would be nice.

Yeah I mean if there weren't any drama this would be a show about people in space and then just doing their mundane space jobs.
I will say I love the fact they have space cell phones. And video calls. That shit cracks me up. And that they brought garland into space to decorate.

Okay, I've just watched episode 7 and I'm thinking I'll finish the season since I've only got 3 eps left, but I doubt I'd watch a second season.
A couple of things irked me in this episode:

this was a bit of a slog, and I wound up fast forwarding the heavy melodrama to get to the sci-fi and space bits... I liked the last ep though, wonder if it found its footing?
The effects were pretty good, but the drama to scifi/space stuff was prob 80/20 would like it to get to 50/50 next time if there is a next time...

Cancelled unfortunately.
I was planning to watch as I like the cast and creative team.
For those who finished the season, does it have any kind of satisfactory end or does it feel incomplete and obviously had more story to tell?
Netflix is just killing projects that aren't getting massive viewers and getting talked about on social media and such. I'll be honest, I saw very little to no promotion or coverage of this show. It's been out barely over a month and they pulled the plug.
