it just went off the rails bizarre all of a sudden. like wtf was that thing and why so similar to
Spoiler:
Alien chestburster (in certain regards that is).

i really hope this isn't some kind of grand scheme to tie to that universe.

but that thing looks like it could devour the planet or something...

The end was weird as hell lol. I could be way off base but I think it's a lot more straight forward than it seems.

Spoiler:
-The voices talking the Mithraick dude is not Sol (Saul? lol). It's an evil force home to this planet.

-Early on Mother and the children were playing by giant bones that in retrospect seem an awful lot like the bones of a giant evil alien snake thing.

-The creature Mother saw in the metal cube in one of her visions, is the evil force. In an earlier vision it was completely encased. Later on she has a vision where it's like melting or something. That's the evil force being released and free to do whatever evil shit. It was released when Paul heard voices and burnt the sorcery card things. Paul thought it was Sol talking to him, but it was the evil thing.

-Somehow that force impregnated Mother while plugged in to the ship thing.

-Once Paul burned those sorcery cards it was free to be born / suck the life force out of Mother / and I guess reverse the space ship out of the magma so it didn't die?

-The devolving humans wouldn't be actually devolving humans, but the evil force being sucked out of the human like creatures to return to the full power evil alien snake thing?

I think I'm at least in the ballpark. Or maybe I'm way off. Weird show but I really dig it.

Interesting theories, I was thinking something similar regarding the source of the voices at least.

Interesting theory I read on avclub:
Spoiler:
Okay so the thing here is the dodecahedron that she saw in her visions with the head puking up white stuff. In the present she finds it and the head, which is humanoid and wearing a mask, the mask is made with a channel coming out the mouth. The dodecahedron is a container holding an android that is giving birth to snakes out her mouth. Mother is an android based on the technology Sol gave to the Mithraic so the android in the dodecahedron is a precursor Mother android. So the necromancer androids are actually created to give birth to the god space-snakes.

Spoiler:

I am not so sure that the snake creature is evil. It did nothing threatening to Mother, and looks like it piloted them to safety. Then they panicked and jumped out of the ship. There definitely seems to be an "evil" force but not sure it is the creature. I mean it could be, but I think it's appearance might be misdirection. They have certainly set up a bunch of interesting areas to explore: New ark, mother and father on the other side of the planet which is likely populated, evil influenced father and son. Definitely interested in season 2

Spoiler:
My slightly alternative theory: We have not seen the Mithraic yet. They likely still exist on the other side of the planet. The Mithraic and the humans have a war on the planet, with the Necromancers (likely stolen from the Mithraic somehow) giving birth to the snakes to defend themselves. The humans (or maybe more likely the Mithraic if human) are technologically advanced, enough so that some may have escaped to our earth and are our progenitors. It is possible/likely also that the Mithraic and the "humans" are all human but maybe become split through religion paralleling what happened on earth. Or the humans are slaves to a different Species in the Mithraic Nothing to say either way yet, though I think a Mithraic class and slave class is a strong possibility. They wage a civil war , and the area is destroyed (likely by some sort of nuke). The Mithraic escape to "the tropics" but the surviving humans in the area eventually devolve. But I believe the snakes are actually a weapon against the Mithraic)

This was decent, fell apart on the last two episodes. The very end of the finale episode was unintentionally hilarious.

Re: Raised by Wolves (HBO Max) -- Sci-Fi series from EP Ridley Scott -- Premieres 9/3/20

I read a much more boring idea...

Spoiler:
The snake is like a tapeworm. It was an infection by chance.

The show is reminding me a lot of Lost. A lot of open ends. I hope it doesn't trail on forever, or leave things unsolved - the way lost did (save Lost's catch-all ending).

Good show. I never saw anything like it. They could go so many places with it (including jumping hundreds of years into the future).

I don't think it's by chance.

Here's an article (full of spoilers for the current season, and some explanations that I don't think spoil future seasons but clarify a lot of what is going on):

I finished up the season last night, and while I liked the show overall, that last episode was...weird.

I wrapped up last night... this show went completely off the rails, IMO. A flying snake? WTF. Bad enough that it's a goddam snake that got to be 200' after 20 minutes on this planet... but it flies?

Good read... I'm glad the Director has a 5-6 season story arc in mind. I hope it plays out that way.

Re: Raised by Wolves (HBO Max) -- Sci-Fi series from EP Ridley Scott -- Premieres 9/3/20

I just binged this show over the last few days. LOVED the first several episodes, but I am not sure what to think of the last few. A lot of the things that have happened--especially with Mother--seem to point to the whole story taking place inside some kind of simulation, but I am hoping that's not the case as it would lower the stakes on everything.

Glad to see that it's been renewed.

It's not a simulation. Look it up. There's a Ridley Scott interview where he says a little bit about it.

One thing that I did not realize until discussion afterwards... The Necromancers appear to be more than robots. More like something ancient and organic, that's been given AI. I think. Otherwise, it's a leap (and pretty stupid) to believe the snake could have grown inside, and mixed DNA to fly.

Goddamn this show!! I was really into and loving this show.... until she gave birth. I mean I almost turned it off. But I'm still in for another season. That said, I looooove the opening theme and I can't get it out of my head. The soundtrack overall is great.

They do mention in the show that the necromancers were built out of tech that they found and that they didn't really understand (which also gave them the map to this planet). So the theory that
Spoiler:
this planet is the origin of those designs (and that their purpose was to be trapped in those cubes can give birth to the snakes)
makes some sense.

But yeah that last episode was certainly jarring. I liked it, though, it was certainly unexpected.

Re: Raised by Wolves (HBO Max) -- Sci-Fi series from EP Ridley Scott -- Premieres 9/3/20

I've listened to a couple of the podcast episodes. They don't break down and discuss each episode of the show one at a time. Instead, they discuss how the show relates to real world technology and broader science fiction themes, like the search for extra-solar planets, and the possibilities of developing artificial intelligence. It's good, but the ones I've listened to are not like a behind-the-scenes exploration of the making of the show.

from the Necromancer Wiki

According to Carl, a Mithraic medical android, the instructions to build necromancers were allegedly found in ancient Mithraic scripture. They make use of a technology based on "dark photons", which were supposedly discovered as a result of messages encoded in Mithraic scripture.

Yeah that's what I got from the descriptions and I kinda lost interest.

Definitely read the collider article I posted earlier (and the follow up one talking about season 2 if you're interested in that). It's not a behind the scenes but it does give a lot of information (which they either should have put in the actual episodes or at the very least should have made clearer)
