It’s just a teaser, but I like the look of it. I’d like to see a show built around this time period be successful on network TV. Off the top of my head, the last one I really loved and was short lived was American Dreams.

Is it supposed to be in the 60s?

So is this supposed to be sharing the same universe as the original I guess, just seeing it from an African-American family's POV?

I wasn’t much of a fan of the original so I pass on this one.

Re: The Wonder Years (ABC) - from EP Fred Savage and Lee Daniels - premieres 9/22/21

Anyone watch this tonight? I checked it out. The first episode was pretty bland as they tried to set up some of the characters. It doesn't seem like it will have the same magic the original show had. The narrator sounded like he was in his 30's, the same as the original. But the original came out over thirty years ago, so it would have made sense for the narrator to sound that age. Someone present day talking about his memories of being a twelve year old boy in 1968 should sound like he was in his 60's and not have as youthful a voice as he does on the new show.

Haven't watched it yet, but isn't Don Cheadle the narrator? He's 56.

Yes, he is. And he sounds no different than Stern did back in the day.

It wasn't bad, but a show set in the 60s...in 2021...I just don't know how many people will continue tuning in.

No character except Dule really stuck out to me.

Yes, but that's my point. If it's a present day narrator recalling events that happened when he was a teenager 52 years ago, he should sound much older than he does.

Re: The Wonder Years (ABC) - from EP Fred Savage and Lee Daniels - premieres 9/22/21

The original Wonder Years came out in 1988 and reflected on nostalgia from 1968 and the years after that. So we had the first moon walk and the MLK JR assassination. If the new show kept the twenty year formula, we would have the show set in 2001 and the first episode would reference the 9/11 attacks.

I didn’t watch it all yet. I was eating supper with my parents, and it started as we were finishing up so I really was only paying a little attention. I need to give it more of a chance, but what I saw so far wasn’t grabbing me the way I was expecting it to.

I feel that the AV Club had the same issue as MovieGuru, they gave it a C and did not feel the pilot showed much charm. I have it on my DVR and plan to watch but it could just be a case of the pilot being meh as things quickly pick-up, because we have all seen this on other sitcoms/dramas, where they end up hooking you as a viewer if you give the show a few episodes to work its magic on you. Hopefully, this is one of those shows. I did not watch the OG show but still looked forward to this re-imagining of the show.

I was prepared to hate it, but I watched and thought it was pretty good. I'll watch it again. I have one question though:
Spoiler:
Was the girl he saw his best friend kissing the girl he had a crush on or the other "most popular girl in school"

The original series was a show that was being nostalgic about life in the the 1960's. The new series is a show that is trying to be nostalgic about a series from the 1980's that was being nostalgic about life in the 1960's.

Having grown up/lived through that era, and having lived in the south for a significant portion of my early years and as an adolescent and teen, I thought it was excellent. We will definitely be tuning in again.

I loved it. The new vibe. The new race/culture. Much more political and sign of times, which sadly hasn’t changed much. But I loved and didn’t know Dule Hill was in this. He was great as well as young newcomer. Will definitely keep watching. This will have more social impact than original and I think it’s great change. I barely remembered the early Vietnam eps when Winnie’s brother died. That was first few. After that no real social commentary. Fun and great show sure. But this is relevant, more to say. I’m sure every episode won’t be like this, but will feel genuine if and when again and so far done so well. Love that Lee Daniels and Fred Savage EP and directs. Really fun so far.

Who says the narration is taking place in 2021? Just because we're hearing it now, doesn't mean that's when it was narrating.
NOTE: I haven't watched it, so I don't know if the narrator makes any reference to it being 2021.

And accuracy isn't really all that important, since we're ignoring that Fred Savage at 17 should sound at least a little bit like Daniel Stern at 36.

I remember there being a joke in the narration about the flu or something that seemed like a "wink, wink" to COVID.

I didn't think much of the first episode. It didn't have the feel I thought it would.

Re: The Wonder Years (ABC) - from EP Fred Savage and Lee Daniels - premieres 9/22/21

It feels odd without the theme at the beginning. The original theme with the footage that looks like it was shot from an old home movie camera really gave the nostalgic vibe to the show. The lack of an opening theme makes it feel modern and not nostalgic of the 1960's.

When the Wonder Years first came out, there hadn't been many retro shows that came before it. All we had was MASH, Happy Days, and Laverne and Shirley. So the Wonder Years was still unique during that time. Now television is saturated with shows that take place in prior decades like the new Wonder Years. This new show would be lucky to last one season if they didn't slap the Wonder Years name in the title.
