I don't believe this is a commonly prosecuted offense (the date rape drug -> rape scenario). .

A former NFL player (Darren Sharper) was convicted for this a few years ago.

I don't disagree. That whole thing of women now being able to accuse people and take them to trial even 50 years later with zero physical evidence is some pretty heavy stuff. Granted, fuck any guy that is a rapist. Cut their dick off and throw them in jail forever if it is proven.

He must have said some shit that really showed him to be a predator.

I saw that resurfaced clip of him this morning on Conan O' Brien. Was it maybe a known thing around Hollywood that this guy was a fucking weirdo and possible rapist?

I didn't pay any attention to the trial, but it certainly paints a black mark on that 70's show. Kinda like anything that Bill Cosby or OJ Simpson show up in. It really doesn't affect my enjoyment of the show itself, but you always have that sour taste in the back of your mind.

I wonder if reruns will be pulled from most networks like Cosby Show was.

I guess that's one way to go. Something to think about.

It might be considered a little different since Masterson isn't the lead of the show and it isn't centered around him like Cosby was with the Cosby Show.
Plus Cosby may have been making residuals from the show all this time and they wanted to cut off some of his income (no idea if that's the actual case), and maybe Masterson isn't making any money on residuals?

I searched for the clip on Youtube, and if it's the same one you're referring to (ie. "touch my balls") - I think the whole thing played out as a joke, especially with Conan mentioning "I heard about you.. and you'll be caught soon". I really don't think Conan knew anything or heard anything - it was just a funny response to what Masterson said. This isn't like people making references to Harvey Weinstein long before he was exposed. Those were definite hints disguised as jokes.

It's been touched on in the Hollywood thread but yeah I think Cosby is a different thing... the show was named after him, centered on him, and it basically relies on a persona of being a wholesome, good person. 70s show was more of an ensemble piece and Masterson's character was... not. Having said that, I'm not like a huge fan of the show so I don't know if this somehow sours a fan's viewing of the show going forward.

His lawyers are still going to appeal, right? I wonder how long that drags out.

Exactly. I believe the percentage of rapists who actually get in legal trouble is almost zero.

Like I said, most commonly, it happens to a woman once or twice before she wises up and doesn't let it happen again. It's not something that ends up with law enforcement.

I agree it’s not a great look, but it’s not like they’re calling the victims liars or anything. They just said that they have known Danny for many years, consider him a friend and thought he had been a positive influence in their lives. All can be true even if the guy is actually human scum.

Agreed. They wrote their notes to explain their personal experiences with Masterson. Doesn’t seem like anything terrible to me.

Still not a good look to run interference for a guy who raped multiple women.

I remember when Topher Grace left That 70's Show and everyone thought he was a snob or ungrateful, and then there was the E True Hollywod story where he was critcized for not being good friends with Masterson,Valderama and Kutcher and going out partying with them. Looks like his decision aged well.

Yeah, this is really disappointing. To find out that Masterson really is a vile scumbag... disappointing is an understatement.

I LOVE That 70's Show. It's one of my all time favorite shows. Cleverly written, good detail to make it look and feel like the 70's (I grew up in the 70's), great characters, and the actors were all just right for their roles. It all worked. And then to find out that Masterson is such a scumbag? It won't stop me from watching the show, but I won't ever view Hyde quite the same way again.

Nice to finally see someone involved in Scientology held accountable for their criminal actions.

again, if he did it he's a fucking scumbag and deserves to rot in jail, but how do you put someone in jail for 30 years with zero physical evidence after decades? i'm fascinated by this. what was the evidence that put him in jail for possibly the rest of his life? How was this verdict made? is it not, at this point, he said, she said?

They took it a step further and retracted to side fully with the victims and to explain what you just said.
