You brought up playing Kevorkian and Angels in America, you do realize those were directed by Barry Levinson and Mike Nichols, right? As others have stated, the line between TV and film eroded years ago.

Another reason for "A-listers" being more open to TV work is technological; previously, it was being on a 19" low-resolution screen vs. the massive screen of a movie theater. Now most TV screens look better than a lot of theaters! Being on standard definition TV was not flattering to an actor's appearance.

Guess his movie career is over if you are doing a CW show which is not as prestigious as a Netflix, Showtime or HBO production.
Funny thing about that Luke Wilson casting. Luke had semi-retired when Stargirl's creator and showrunner, Geoff Johns, decided Luke Wilson had to play this character. Luke didn't go looking for the part, Johns all but offered him the job if he'd agree to do the show.

Apparently Johns had been thinking of this series for a long time and had always wanted Luke Wilson for the role.

Woody Allen in two TV projects in the 90's. He directed and starred in Don't Drink the Water in 1994. And he co-starred with Peter Falk in a remake of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys, a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation that sat on the shelf for almost two years; it debuted on video in Australia in February 1996, but wasn't shown on US TV until December 1997.

Marlon Brando as George Lincoln Rockwell in the mini-series Roots: The Next Generation (1979). Supposedly, Brando approached the producers, because he wanted to appear in the show. He won an Emmy for his performance.

Heston appeared in the 1983 mini-series Chiefs. Heston took the role because it portrayed a banker in a positive light.

Not sure this counts, but as we all know Tom Hanks was a 30 minute comedy star before he became an A-List movie star.

But, then he produced and acted in an episode of From the Earth to the Moon on HBO pretty much at the height of his stardom.
