EXCLUSIVE: The eve of his potential historic night at the Emmys, Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae looks to have found his first major studio role following that breakout in a property more popular then the Netflix global phenomenon.

Sources tell Deadline that Lee has landed the male lead in the new Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte from Lucasfilm. Amandla Steinberg is set for the other lead role, with Deadline also recently breaking the news that Jodie Turner-Smith also is joining cast.

That’s shaping up to be an interesting cast.

So it’s post High Republic and pre Clone Wars. Cool.

re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.

This is a Monday to celebrate for Star Wars fans.

Today, Disney+ announced the cast for The Acolyte, an upcoming Star Wars Original series from Lucasfilm. Joining the previously announced Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) are Emmy Award-winner Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Manny Jacinto (Nine Perfect Strangers), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix).

Lucasfilm also released the first -the-scenes image from the series, which you can check out below.

The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

The High Republic saw the Jedi Order at its prime, centuries prior to the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. You can learn more about this era at StarWars.com’s official hub for all things High Republic.

From creator, showrunner, and executive producer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll), The Acolyte has begun production in the U.K. The executive producers are Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King, and Jason Micallef. Rayne Roberts and Damian Anderson are producing. Headland will also direct the series pilot.

The Acolyte will stream exclusively on Disney+.

So, not in costume but on a set that is clearly of Star Wars design. As noted, we're about 200 years before The Phantom Menace. Awesome to see Manny Jacinto again.

Sounds like it could be interesting, but I really don't trust Disney and Lucasfilm yet.

Semi spoilers about the plot from Daphne Keen

Spoiler:
“I can tease that it’s a prequel. No, I mean, as you know, it’s set 100 years before the prequel movies, and it’s kind of an explanation of how the Sith infiltrated the Jedi. It’s a Sith-led story, which has never been done before.”

^^ Well, on paper, that sounds very promising. I beg them to make this more Andor and less Boba Fett. I don't need Gen Z angst and quite honestly, this show needs the quality acting we get from Mandalorian (most of the time) and Andor (all of the time).

The Second Wave of The High Republic Books just started a few weeks ago (and is set 100+ years prior to the events of the First Wave of The High Republic which is approximately 200 years before ANH, and yes, Yoda is prevalent towards the end of the first wave)... and I know that there will be a Third Wave. I wonder if they will tie the movie into that wave. Could be great. There are some neat characters in The High Republic era.

re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.

The first look at “The Acolyte,” the upcoming “Star Wars” thriller series starring Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae, was revealed at London’s Star Wars Celebration convention.

The cast also includes Jodie Turner-Smith, “The Good Place” star Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Dean-Charles Chapman, Charlie Barnett and Margarita Levieva.

“The Acolyte,” which was reported to be in development by Variety in 2020 before officially being announced later that year, is created by Leslye Headland, best known for co-creating “Russian Doll” and directing the films “Bachelorette” and “Sleeping With Other People.” The series takes place in the High Republic era of the “Star Wars” universe, 100 years before the franchise’s prequel trilogy. The height of the Galactic Empire, this period is also known as the Golden Age of the Jedi, a time when the ancient order was at its peak.

While speaking at the panel, Headland said she pitched the series as “‘Frozen’ meets ‘Kill Bill'” from the perspective of the bad guys, with samurai films as an overall inspiration. It is set between the High Republic and beginning of the prequels, “because this is when the bad guys are outnumbered.” This is the furthest back “Star Wars” has been in time in live action, which means lots of Jedi, and will include lots of things fans haven’t seen in live action before.

The footage, shared only at the Celebration as the show is still filming, included shots of a Jedi temple, Moss in a fight with Stenberg that recalled the former’s “Matrix” performance, a gold lightsaber, and a pivotal shot at the end with a group of Jedis lighting up their sabers in unison. “This is about power and who is allowed to use it,” was the key quote, which came before the 2024 date announcement.

Although plot details for the series remain slim, “The Acolyte” reportedly focuses on the emergence of the Sith, a group of Dark Jedi set on conquering the galaxy. In the “Star Wars” canon, “acolyte” has been used to describe soldiers for the powerful Sith Lords. In interviews, Headland has described her show as a mystery thriller set in the darker corners of the “Star Wars” universe.

“The Acolyte” is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. Other upcoming “Star Wars” Disney+ projects the Rosario Dawson-led series “Ahsoka,” and the Jude Law series “Skeleton Crew.”

re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.

There's a bootleg trailer up on youtube, recorded with a phone.

Whoever posted it seems to want to keep it hidden so I won't link to it, but if you want to see it do a google search for ACOLYTE TRAILER OXICLEAN and click on the first website that shows up.

Dunno... maybe it's just the poor quality of the recording, but it looks cheap and low-budget like a fan film.

Just watched that... we'll have to see, the environments/sets definitely aren't standouts that's for sure.

Welp, here's what I'll say.... I've been blown away by some recent SW trailers and the shows sucked. So while I wasn't blown away by that Acolyte sneak peek, I'll reserve judgement and hope for the best.

Another black character with the Killmonger hair style. How original.

I admittedly am going in pretty skeptical (how could you not with anything Star Wars) and this really only heightened my concerns. Overall I'd say it definitely looks like an average Disney+ streaming series, which is not great.
