Based on the 1998 bestselling novel by Wally Lamb, adapted and directed by Derek Cianfrance, this limited series follows the parallel lives of identical twin brothers, played by Mark Ruffalo. A family saga, it tells a story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness set against the backdrop of 20th-century America. Premieres April 27.

What's it about? I Know This Much Is True is a family saga that follows the parallel lives of identical twin brothers in a story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness set against the backdrop of 20th-century America.

Who's in it? Three-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (HBO's award-winning The Normal Heart) stars as twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Treme) will also star as their mother, Concettina Ipolita Tempesta Birdsey. Rosie O'Donnell is playing Lisa Sheffer, a social worker at the Hatch Forensic Institute where Thomas is staying, and Emmy Award-winning The Good Wife album Archie Panjabi will play Thomas' new psychologist Dr. Patel.

Imogen Poots has been cast as Dominick's live-in girlfriend Joy Hanks, and Camping's Juliette Lewis will be Nedra Frank, a self-absorbed grad student Dominick hires. Kathryn Hahn, who's also starring in the upcoming Mrs. Fletcher, will play Dessa Constantine, his ex-wife.

How many episodes will there be? Writer and director Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) is behind six episodes based on the 1998 bestselling novel by author Wally Lamb (I'll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin' and Hopin').

What's happening behind the scenes? Ruffalo will executive-produce the series, alongside writer and director Derek Cianfrance. Ben Browning, Glen Basner, Wally Lamb, Gregg Fienberg and Anya Epstein are also serving as executive producers. Co-executive producers include Lynette Howell Taylor and Jamie Patricof. The series will be made in partnership with FilmNation Entertainment (The Big Sick, Arrival).

God I remember that book. It was SO DEPRESSING. I had to stop reading it about half-way through. For a while it was a super-popular novel, I think Oprah was a big fan of it, IIRC.

Sounds like a faithful adaptation

I've loved Ruffalo since You Can Count on Me (which i adored) and probably have seen everything of his since (actually except for Dark Waters, which i have, i have seen everything of his that was made theatrically and cable mini-series). Will not miss...

Sounds like they captured the feel of the book. I watched the first episode and it was very good but damn, it was bleak. Like, every unfortunate thing that could happen to those guys happened. Only one episode in and NOTHING goes right for them.

Very believable “twin” effects. You totally buy both brothers are there together. Great acting too. Ruffalo does a great job making two completely separate characters.

It was a solid first episode but wow was it depressing. It’s probably good it’s only 6 episodes because if the other 5 hours are like this I may need medication after it’s over. Nothing really over the top happened, I just think the overall tone/mood made me feel blah. I will watch Ruffalo in about anything and he doesn’t disappoint here.

I saw it and I am in for the entire series.

Also it is set in Pittsburgh which is cool.

Oldboy you should see Dark Waters. It was a good movie.

i know, i know. i love those type of based on true story events that they make look so good on theater screens (of course they take liberties and even something as simple as shooting mostly in a writing room, like Spotlight, though they of course do leg work, but just a stellar cast with an incredible script. but, The Post, Spotlight, King's Speech, so many good ones recently. i have to get to this...

Damn, this show is bleak.

Spoiler:

Viewers: “Stop. We’re only one episode in and we can’t take anymore!”

Filmmakers: “So, you want a dead baby, then?”

After episode one I didn’t think it could get any more depressing, then episode two comes along. It’s like a train wreck...I can’t take my eyes off it but dang it’s sad.

And now the sane brother or closest to normal Bro is in the hospital.

The guy who plays the Ruffalo characters at a younger age is pretty good.

I’m really enjoying this. It doesn’t seem to be generating much buzz, probably because it’s so dark, but it’s one of a few shows I look forward to each week.

I seem to remember really liking the book, but everything about this show is so depressing that I just can't watch it any more. This might be the first time I've given up on an HBO drama. (Comedies are a different matter. Don't get me started about Betty.)

The Grandpa what a dick.
Spoiler:
His brother got out fast but then I saw the finale is next week so that explains that.

It ends next week.

It will be interesting to see how this finishes up. I’m glad I tuned in. Although it’s dark I’ve enjoyed every episode.
