SNL 02/29/20 (S45E14) -- H: John Mulaney -- MG: David Byrne

John Mulaney is back!

... and if you've never heard of David Byrne, you've at least heard of Talking Heads:

I'm a massive Talking Heads fan and that was such a fun, unexpected, and lively performance of Once in a Lifetime. Why did that happen just now in 2020? I have no idea, but I love that it did!

It’s his American Utopia solo tour that started 2 years ago. He eventually took it to Broadway. It’s an amazing show. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

My picture;

Dear Lord that LaGuardia Airport Broadway sketch was epic! I am so happy now.

Even though Once in a Lifetime is such a classic song, I was more impressed with the second performance.

I saw his American Utopia show on Broadway, it was great. If you have a chance, it’s coming back this Fall.

He is very funny...great delivery. Loved his Bill of Rights bit.

Have to admit I didn't know who David Byrne was, but I certainly knew Talking Heads. Great to see/hear that classic song live.

Re: SNL 02/29/20 (S45E14) -- H: John Mulaney -- MG: David Byrne

John Mulaney has now given us three of the greatest episodes of SNL history. Whenever he is on, the writing is smart, the sketches are the best of the season and there is always an amazing Broadway style musical sketch paying tribute to some arcane aspect of living in NYC. The guy is clearly a genius.

How has he not been scooped up and given some production deal or variety show with one of the big streaming services throwing money around right now?

He has a Netflix deal. He released a children’s variety comedy/musical special a few months ago.

Well Netflix has paid him a fortune already. They let him do whatever he wants. If he wanted to do a show, he would have one there.
That kids’ TV special he did last Christmas was pretty great..

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, except this time he has a guy who looks like Louis CK playing the Joker next to him.

Regarding Mulaney, he did have a sitcom on Fox a while back. It flopped, but it was before he hosted SNL.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't find Mulaney funny. What's up with the stilted way he talks?

He's like Louis Farrakhan. He means a lot to a very small group of people.

No Pete Davidson talk in the thread, even though he was all over the internet news this week.

Since his friend Mulaney was hosting, Pete showed up to appear in a live sketch this week, but I am the only one who really thought he would show up on Update to address his status on the show?

In all seriousness, I am convinced that Lorne keeps him on the show because he is afraid of having another cast-member's tragic death hung on his legacy.

It was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, but for me one of the highlights of the Byrne performance was during Once in a Lifetime, when the bass player pointed at his in-ear monitor and gave the "up" signal, meaning he wasn't hearing himself enough. I've been very vocal about the "canned" musical performances on SNL this year, so it was good seeing at least one act that is all about the live sound and less about the visual performance.

You have a VERY idiosyncratic way of watching this show.

I missed the show, but caught the David Byrne performances on YouTube. Great stuff! It was a miniature version of the American Utopia set.

Can't wait for that to be released on Blu-ray!

I'm just that way with any "live" musical performance on television; I look for some kind of clue that it's actually being performed live and isn't being lip-synched or mimed.

This and the Adam Driver episode near the top of the best shows of the season.

Heidi Gardner was mostly absent except for maybe one sketch.

But this was her first promo... maybe it took a lot out of her.
