Devs (c: Alex Garland, s: Mizuno, Offerman) (FX on Hulu) -- 3/5/20

Saw a trailer for this, figured I'd make a thread though I now realize I jumped the gun by a couple months (stupid Soon ads.) This was originally intended for FX but the Disney Shuffle has it debuting on Hulu instead as an eight episode miniseries.

it sounds like it's about predictive AI, aesthetically it looks like a prequel to Ex Machina.

I was looking forward to this until they announced it wouldn't actually be showing on FX. Not gonna subscribe to Hulu just for this. Hopefully there will be a Blu-ray release down the line.

Thought the first two episodes were ok. Really not impressed by the lead actress. This feels like the logical extension of some of the stuff going on in Ex Machina. I'm interested enough to see where this is going.

Yeah I normally like Pill and Mizuno but I guess Garland intentionally went stilted with it.

Has it been explained at all why this isn't just a Hulu show?

What's the point in marketing it as an FX show if its not going to be shown on the channel?

It was originally produced to air on FX. With the acquisition by Disney, they shut down the FX app and moved the content over to Hulu and branded it as FX on Hulu. In doing that, they decided to air some of the shows that were greenlit and produced before the acquisition as exclusives to the Hulu.

I knocked out the first 3 episodes yesterday. It's fine, but definitely a slow-burn. Episode 4 airs tonight. The lead actress played the Asian synth in ExMachina -- didn't even recognize her because she is ultra skinny in DEVS and has an awful pizie-type hairdo.

Read Tegmark's (MIT Prof.) "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" if you want to be scared shitless about the coming AI singularity. He also touches on quantum computing. It's all going to make COVID-19 seem like fun.

About Devs: I thought this would be much better given the concept and the brainpower behind it. Where Ex Machina was great, this show is average, at best.

Re: Devs (c: Alex Garland, s: Mizuno, Offerman) (FX on Hulu) -- 3/5/20

So... no one else is still watching this? Final episode is this week.

I think it's improved quite a bit since the first couple episodes, and it borders on greatness, but maybe doesn't quite get there. I think a big part of that is that the lead actress just isn't very good. But I like everyone else, and nearly everything else about the show itself. I went in kind of expecting to hate it (San Francisco? Self-important Programmers? Not a comedy show like SV? BOOOORING...) but it works for me.

Iím still watching. I really enjoy it. Itís become a different show than I thought it was going to be. Almost more sci-fi than techy? Kind of both I guess.
Didnít know itís wrapping up this week, just assumed it was the traditional 10 episode season. Whatís considered a season seems to be getting shorter all the time. The norm was 13, then 10, now Iím seeing a lot of 8.

We've been watching it. By the way it's a mini-series and there's no season 2 planned. It was meant to play out in it's entirety in 8 episodes.

I've really been enjoying it more than I expected. I just don't understand why Sonoya Mizuno is playing Lily so monumentally uninteresting. She has no personality whatsoever, and every scene she's in just dies.

I thought, hoped... maybe... it was a stylistic choice by Garland to have her act this way, and there was a hint, early on, that there might be some payoff to that
Spoiler:
After her faux-suicide attempt, she says something to her friend about thinking it was believable

And I thought that'd be a kind of turning point for her performance, that she'd be more charismatic... but... nope. She's still just the weakest of the cast.

Luckily, the show is damn good, and overcomes her performance.

I jad planned on checking this out, but when people were saying the first couple of episodes weren’t that good, I dropped it from me queue. Nut since it’s apparently turned into a food show I’ll probably binge it soon now..

I enjoyed the show. The first half of the episodes are just straight typical/linear narritive, but by episode 5 and until the end, it turns into a existential mind-fuck. It was a great show.

Yeah, I want to give it a rewatch. I enjoyed it quite a lot, but I'm not sure it really sticks the landing.
Or maybe it does, given the things Forest says... hmmmmm...

Between this and All The Gods In The Sky, and re-playing Nier: Automata been consuming a lot of existential dread.

This may be more on Alex Garland than Mizuno's performance. All of the main characters speak in this kind of flat, blissed out style that I saw in Annihilation and Ex Machina. Still enjoyed the show, but appreciated the visuals and sound design more than its dry intellectualism.

I liked Mizuno on Maniac, though it may of been the cigs and wig.

Re: Devs (c: Alex Garland, s: Mizuno, Offerman) (FX on Hulu) -- 3/5/20

They definitely liked showing her in a tight tank and panties with no bra. I thought this show had a great concept, but the stoic acting almost completely derailed it for me. Mizuno is cute as hell, but I really couldn't get past her cardboard emotions, even though she saw both of her boyfriends die. The ending was interesting, but that's where the intriguing concept went from cool to almost silly. Not sure if I'd watch it again, but it did make me want to watch Ex Machina again. So there's that.
