Great episode so far. The Sonic cake had me rolling and then Eddie says shit!

He tripped over a bunch of lines during Black Jeopardy but still funny.

What did he say when he came out as Gumby on Weekend Update? It was bleeped on the West Coast feed.

Checking my DVR:
I think the thing that got bleeped on the West Coast is this:
Eddie, as Gumby, does say: "I AM THE ONE WHO MADE EDDIE MURPHY A STAR. He was just a regular COON-BOY until I saw him!"
That got a few awkward laughs from the audience and nervous stares and laughs from Jost and Che.

I didn't think everything landed, but tonight made it clear that Eddie can still dial it up. I was actually a little worried about that in a be careful what you wish for sort of way.
Of the recurring characters, I thought only Buckwheat fell a little flat. Also, it would have been a good time to bring back some of Eddie's cast. Why not Mary Gross for the Buckwheat sketch?

I thought they went with too many "classic" Murphy characters, with almost none of the inspiration or creativity from the 80s. Heck, even then they "killed" the Velvet Jones character for overexposure. I think a better character resurrection would have been having angry film critic Raheem Abdul Mohammed on Weekend Update.
That's why I probably got the most laughs out of the final sketch of the night, the eyewitness at the North Pole. It actually brings back a bit Murphy did on his first album; the TV news eyewitness who "saw everything"

I was expecting Eddie to phone it in this entire episode but he seemed like he was going all out in each skit.
That’s the best I could hope for.

Where was Joe Piscopo?
I liked the ScarJo episode better.
The episode was ok but not on the same level as the Sandler return from back in May.
Adam Driver is the next host on Jan 25. That is a long break.
I thought maybe Jan 11 or 18 would be the next SNL show.

That was probably the first SNL Episode I watched since the Will Ferrell era in the late 90’s. I love Eddie Murphy and he had that spark of being funny that he hasn’t had in a longtime (the guy has 10 kids so he’s different then 22 year old single Eddie from the 80’s).
Good god SNL should be put to rest as they can’t do anything original as the show is just stale. I look at ‘In Living Color’ and ‘Chappelle Show’ and even ‘MadTV’ as they all tried something different and took this genre in new places.
They couldn’t even let Eddie finish his monologue (which was actually funny) without bringing out his contemporaries which has been done to death. I was waiting for the audience to start asking questions. Lol
I honestly can’t believe people still watch this show every week as it should have died a dignified death 20 years ago.
In saying that, I’m interested to see the ratings and see where this ranks on most watched SNL Episodes?

While it was good to see Mr. Robinson again, I was kind of disappointed that it was just a normal sketch. I was really hoping for a full-on parody of "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," with some journalist doing an article on what happened to him.

Eddie has "returned" to stand-up comedy this year because he is being paid a fortune for a Netflix special. SNL was a piece of that roll-out. Notice Chappelle, who is a Netflix not an SNL connection, showing up during the monologue, and then all of them giving a shout out to Netflix.
So Eddie wasn't going to burn off any of his material on SNL.

Velvet Jones didn't completely work, but it was worth it for me for the instagram ho joke.

As someone who doesn't have any nostalgia for Eddie Murphy on SNL I thought it was one of the worst episodes of the season. Pretty much everything involving old characters fell flat.

How can Eddie Murphy go back to a small club in 2020 in the age of smartphones and try out material? If he shows up to any club, it will blow up Twitter! They will scrutinize every joke before his special so he can’t work out his material even like a Chappelle can (who is the best now).
Murphy admitted on Fallon this week he has not started going back to clubs to try new material. He admitted on Seinfeld’s Netflix show that’s why he got out in 1987. His unfinished bits were being leaked as he got crap for a Joan Rivers dead husband joke he did at a club he was still working out.
I hope I’m wrong but he’s almost too big a Star to come back the way he wants.

It wouldn't be this, but if was willing to accept and solicit honest feedback about his material, he has access to the greatest comedians working today.

Re: SNL 12/21/19 (S45E10) -- H: Eddie Murphy -- MG: Lizzo
The problem is Eddie Murphy is George Lucas (when Lucas started making the Prequels) and all his friends worship him cause he paved the way. Do you think Chris Rock or Chappelle are going to give him legit feedback, the same way nobody was honest with Lucas during the Prequels. Now if Richard Pryor or Red Foxx we’re still alive, that’s different cause they were idols of Murphy and would call it as they see it.
