Re: SNL 12/21/19 (S45E10) -- H: Eddie Murphy -- MG: Lizzo
I don’t know how he’s going to be able to do a Netflix special because he’s admitted you have to go back to clubs and try out material and evolve all the bits just like football team practicing.
How can Eddie Murphy go back to a small club in 2020 in the age of smartphones and try out material? If he shows up to any club, it will blow up Twitter! They will scrutinize every joke before his special so he can’t work out his material even like a Chappelle can (who is the best now).
Murphy admitted on Fallon this week he has not started going back to clubs to try new material. He admitted on Seinfeld’s Netflix show that’s why he got out in 1987. His unfinished bits were being leaked as he got crap for a Joan Rivers dead husband joke he did at a club he was still working out.
I hope I’m wrong but he’s almost too big a Star to come back the way he wants.

He would have to do the Chappelle and Rock thing and have everyone's cell phone taken away/put in one of those things so people can't get audio of his stuff. I'm not sure how that would be possible at small clubs, but they could do it.

That said, I do wish they'd put more inspiration into the writing of the old characters. Having Buckwheat revealed as the Masked Singer was fine, but that was a minute into the sketch. The rest of the bit was just Eddie as Buckwheat mangling popular songs.

The funniest thing they ever did about Buckwheat was when they had him killed off, profiling his "assassin" and how all the obvious signs he was going to do it were there. There doesn't seem to be a good way to revisit that.

It was obviously a riff on the "Buckwheat Sings" sketch from way back when, but the sketch went on too long, and it didn't really make much sense. Plus, you're never going to beat Fee Tines a Mady or Wookin' Pa Nub or whatever the hell he sang for Bette Davis Eyes.

The problem is Eddie Murphy is George Lucas (when Lucas started making the Prequels) and all his friends worship him cause he paved the way. Do you think Chris Rock or Chappelle are going to give him legit feedback, the same way nobody was honest with Lucas during the Prequels. Now if Richard Pryor or Red Foxx we’re still alive, that’s different cause they were idols of Murphy and would call it as they see it.
But to your reply, that's why I said Murphy would have to solicit the honest feedback. I don't know him, so I don't know if he could do it, or if the comedians who revere him would be willing to do it. But I stand by my observation that if Murphy is unable to work out an act in front of audiences, there are a lot of talented people who would be eager to help him.

You and I already went over this back in the fall when this episode was first announced, but if it wasn't for those old characters, there literally would be no SNL today.

If you asked anyone old enough to even know that Eddie Murphy played Buckwheat on SNL, and asked them to describe the bit in 10 words or less, they would say, "Buckwheat sings popular songs but you can't understand any lyrics."

That has zero relevance to whether or not the episode was good or not which is the only thing I care about.

I would be interested to hear anyone under 30 and how they feel about Eddie Murphy? I’m a Gen-X’er so he is God to my generation, but do millennials or Gen Z even know these skits? Heck, many people probably remember him from his 90’s stuff like The Nutty Professor and Dr Doolittle. The last time he was king of comedy was 30+ years ago so I’d be interested to see what young people think of him now other than hearing old foggies like me talk about his early work?

Fortunately I thought Mr Robinson and Gumby killed (even without green face), and I thought Eddie was truly fantastic in the more original material.

Velvet Jones was a waste no matter what, but the comedy of Mr Robinson, Gumby, and Buckwheat could only be completely understood and appreciated if you were familiar with the Murphy's past work on the show. Also, the show was playing the nostalgia card, so if you were just too young that meant one level of meaning was just lost on you.

(CNN) A spokesman for Bill Cosby has fired back at Eddie Murphy after the comedian made jokes at Cosby's expense during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.
In a statement released Sunday, Cosby's spokesman Andrew Wyatt criticized Murphy for the jokes, saying it was Cosby who "broke color barriers in the Entertainment Industry" so that Murphy and other comedians like Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart could perform.
Murphy's jokes were "disparaging," the statement said, adding, "One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation, so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave."
"Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming click bait," Wyatt's statement said.
"Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation," the statement said, "in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together."
So this guy wants Murphy to go visit Bill Cosby in prison, so they can discuss improving the representation of "Black people" on TV?

Probably nobody born after 1990 would get the context of "Buckwheat" or "Gumby." I can remember seeing the Little Rascals/Our Gang serials on tv in the late 70s/early 80s (or whenever they ran) but I don't think they've been shown much since, and by the 80s there was a ton of childrens' programming being produced, so it probably fell down the memory hole. And I learned about Gumby from watching Eddie do the character on SNL when I was a kid. I didn't realize it was an actual cartoon (claymaton) character and just thought it was some random thing Murphy was doing.
And when I was a kid, I didn't know about The Honeymooners either, when he was doing the Ed Norton-Ralph Kramden bit in his standup comedy. It was still funny, but at the time I didn't understand the cultural reference.

I never realized the Gumby personality was taken straight from Jackie Mason (Murphy stated this in an old interview I saw of him). That was the whole joke is that he was this angry jewish comic dressed up in a Gumby outfit, as that is sort of geared to my parents generation. I can't imagine any kid under 35 remotely getting the joke or even knowing who Jackie Mason was.

I was a huge Jackie Mason fan as a kid but watching Gumby this weekend, it truly was the first time I made the connection. I had a great laugh about it as I watched and realized it in real time.

I loved this episode, and loved the callback to some of Murphy's funnier characters. To me, though, the family Christmas digital short was the best part of the show.
