haha, when I read Robert Redford was the President, I'd assumed he was playing a character that was the President not that Robert Redford was actually the President.

Robert Redford running for president is actually a little gag on the final page of the Watchmen comic book.

Re: Watchmen (HBO) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 10/20/19

Okay, I'm in, but think I want to let some episodes build so I can get it in large doses. I have to give HBO credit for greenlighting something this cryptic and weird and also
Spoiler:
killing off a big star in the first episode.
If one had read the GN, this had a lot of clever nods. If not, it would look like a comic hero movie directed by David Lynch.

Whoa. You might want to spoiler that. I didn’t emphasize in title...

I only read the book once just before the movie came out, was the butler guy offering a horseshoe to cut the cake some reference I'm missing?

I really liked this, still waiting for more Watchmen connections. Blown away from the Tulsa Race Riot opening. This was probably the worst racial attack in America and it is almost unheard of or discussed. I still find it vile that Tulsa still has the name Brady on many things in town as he was heavily involved.

He hasn't been a "big star" in like 30 years.

Loved it - great world building and nice nods if you know the comic but not necessary if you don't. Really strong cast too. I'm totally in.

On the fence. Some good moments, some less. Not sure that turning Watchmen into a parable about race in America really fits for me. It’s so far removed from the source material that I respect the inventiveness but just based on this episode I’m not sure yet - also not really a fan of Lindelof and his usual “throw lots of plots in the air and see what sticks” approach.

I've read the comic dozens of times, and I don't think that was a reference to anything in them.

At first I thought it was supposed to some kind of laser cutter or something. If it was, in fact, a real horseshoe, then maybe some kind of reference to the horse he was riding earlier?

Re: Watchmen (HBO) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 10/20/19

I've been skeptical about this project since details started trickling out, but I'm quite impressed. I have no idea where all of this is heading, and I quite like what I've seen so far.

The Watchmen graphic novel is just about a perfect closed circle that doesn't need a sequel even though the ending is open-ended. So if you're going to do a sequel to it, it really needs to be its own story. And Lindelof pulled it off. Between Watchmen and Leftovers, I can almost forgive him for Lost and Prometheus.

Oh, and I got a good laugh out of this tweet:

Maybe they can send them over to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

My guess is there is something “wrong” with the servants. They are robots or clones or something. The cake they made was bad too.

I'd rather see this twice in a row than have to sit through the film again. Westworld had a lot of promise as well. Hopefully this series does a better job of having characters to root for.

Is that also a shot at GOT?

That's what I'm thinking as well. So Irons is supposed to be an older Ozymandias?

I love the original comic, I was devouring each issue when they were being released in the 80's and it's still one of my favorites. I was a bit underwhelmed with this first episode, but I do see promise so I'll stick with it.

So it looks like Dr. Manhattan is back on Mars, huh?

I thought this was awful. A case of a rare instant miss for HBO. Lindelof strikes again.

Re: Watchmen (HBO) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 10/20/19

I was glued to the TV. So much "Wow...they really did that!" in this for me. I knew i would like it..but i have a feeling I'm gonna LOVE it when it's all done.

Good:
-Regina fuckin' King Wow...just fuckin' wow.
-Don Johnson
-Artistic direction in terms of the sets, costumes, etc
-The soundtrack
-The connection to the GN
-An Owl Ship! Doubt it's THE Owl Ship but that's ok.
-Depicting the OK Riots where BOMBS were dropped on people.

Bad:
-Don Johnson's character's fate
-"Black Oklahoma" <- Fuck that shit.

Ya'll have no idea how big a deal this is. Most of the time Black Folks aren't properly lit. Same goes with their makeup. You can't *properly* light a white person and dark skinned person the same way.

Pretty sure that is a slam on GoT and their infamous pitch black battle.

Re: Watchmen (HBO) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 10/20/19

Don't have HBO, so not sure when I'll get to this. Skimming this thread a little to catch broad strokes and avoid spoilers and glad to hear it's off to a good start.

I keep meaning to try HBO Go, but with Disney+ coming soon I'll have more than enough content for my limited time. Which is a situation I already have. So whatever.
