Masters of the Air (Apple TV+) — From Spielberg, Hanks, Goetzman — premieres 1/26/24

Ok, well the Pacific wasn't really BoB, but dealt with the same time period, just a different setting. Now we are getting a 3rd miniseries, set in the same time, but with different subject matter. It sounds cool.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/259...will-go-aerial

HBO has confirmed it is developing a third World War II miniseries from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg following their successful collaborations on "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific."

The untitled miniseries will deal with aerial wars through the eyes of enlisted men of the Eighth Air Force - known as the men of the Mighty Eighth.

Historian Donald L. Miller’s nonfiction book "Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany" will serve as the source material.

Spielberg, Hanks and Gary Goetzman again will serve as executive producers.

This sounds really good. I wonder how long the series will be. I hope they cover right from the beginning, Summer of 42. Brings back memories of watching the tv show 12 O'Clock High when I was a kid.

Didn't The Pacific take almost 2 years to film?

Don't anticipate this hitting HBO for another 3-5 years most likely with the script, casting, filming, post production factored in.

Edit:

Just looked it up. The Pacific started filming in 2007 and wrapped in 2008. It didn't air until 2010. Took almost 3 years from the time filming began, until it aired on HBO. It had a $200M budget.

Depending on how long until they have a script ready, I can't see this being ready to air until 2017 or 2018.

I was hoping they'd do one about the North Africa/Italy campaigns, but this sounds like it will be great too.

I'm trying to knock this but the third time around yet they still basically fired Louis CK?

Umm...yeah...reminds me why Curb Your Enthusiasm is the only HBO product I buy.

Eh. I love WWII but I found the naval and aerial battles to be much less interesting than ground battles. I would still watch this of course.

I think perhaps they should move to Vietnam.

As much as I loved BoB and enjoyed The Pacific, this is the reason I am not as excited as I might otherwise be over this announcement. The Pacific getting made just drug on forever, to the point where it really could not possibly live up to the anticipation that built up for it. So I will simply be glad that this is being made, but now try not to pay attention to it again until they announce an air date.

I agree that N. Africa would be more interesting. Still I'm all in. Loved both previous miniseries.

The Pacific has definitely lowered my expectations for the show. But this is still, very awesome, unexpected news.

Agreed. I found The Pacific a big letdown. Didn't find any of the characters memorable or likeable. In fact, I even found them to look too similar. Only one I truely remember was the guy who wen nuts and that's only because that actor always seems to play the same part.
In fact the only bit I liked in The Pacific was that sergeant who was taking a shower in the rain. It was just funny.

The subject could be interesting. Red Tails had some pretty good aerial scenes so that could look good.
Wonder if they could include the atomic bombings?

Re: Third "Band of Brothers" miniseries in works on HBO...

Pacific wasn't as good as BoB but when you have something of that caliber it would be tough for anything to live up to that standard. Bob had guys you related with, they seemed like your fathers and grandfathers. Pacific had situations that you admired the men getting through them but very little connection with the characters. War films are my favorite genre so I'd be happy to see any of them provided they have compelling source material.

BoB is my all time favorite. I watch the entire series every year. After he died I was reading about Dick Winters and found out he would let people come to his home and autograph things for them. I had been to Hershey PA several times and would have loved to get my BR signed by the man.

Awesome news! The Pacific was not as great as BoB, but it was still very enjoyable, IMO. Can't wait for this to come out.

The Eighth weren't part of the bombings. This will be solely about the European theater, I'll bet.

It would have to be ETO. The 8th never became operational in the Pacific.

It's a shame we have to console ourselves with the amazing Louie, instead of getting a few more seasons of the dreck that was Lucky Louie.

I doubt they would do North Africa as most of that campaign had no American forces involved. And then starting with Torch they fought the French at first before they met the Germans. Maybe if they added in Sicily and Italy it would work. However alot of that was fought by non American troops.

Thanks. I only mentioned it as when I read this story on another website they said this would be based in the Pacific and would not be much of a story if compared to a more european based story.

Even though I really liked The Pacific this was my major problem with it as well. To many similarly looking white males and by the time you had a handle on who was who they moved onto different similarly looking white males.

Aerial warfare?

Yes, please.

Very pleased to hear they will be heading back to Europe for the next series.

I enjoyed Lucky Louie but if LL wasn't the right fit I'm still baffled that HBO let a comedic auteur like CK slip from their fingers to the competition instead of developing Louie in house.

+1. I'm surprised how much love The Pacific is getting.

Depending on how much they spend on digital effects this could be much cheaper to produce then the first two series.

Re: Third "Band of Brothers" miniseries in works on HBO...

When I saw the title of the thread, I immediately thought "Twelve O'Clock High". Nice to see that my inklings were right...it's time to do another look at the air war. Maybe they'll include some of the fighter escort pilots.

Be nice to see them do a miniseries about the Flying Tigers or a WWI series about the Lafayette Escadrille.

Spielberg showed his affection for the genre way back in the 'Amazing Stories" outing featuring the B-17 crew with the cartoonist. I'd be surprised if he wasn't a big fan of Twelve O'Clock High.

Of course, they could do a naval series about a large carrier such as the Big E. You can do movies about subs, destroyers, and PT-boats, but carriers offer a larger cast along with the aerial scenes. Would probably be pretty expensive, though.
