Batwoman hit her apex in comics mostly due to J.H. Williams III's gorgeous artwork. Some of the best-looking superhero art of the past two decades. The show wasn't really much like her comics at all beyond being a lesbian. They adapted some elements straight from the comics, while drastically altering everything else.

I like JH Williams III from his Promethea work but I was never a fan of the look or concept of the new Batwoman. So, I take it that the stories weren't anything special when the comic was popular?

I'm surprised that the show apparently deviates so much from the comic. These days, studios usually tend to adapt the most prominent storylines from these characters' books. They usually want to get fandom on board first by keep things close to the source material. I'd imagine that writing out Kate Kane would kind of suck for Batwoman fans.

And the momentum was ruined with the new 52. I'm not sure if the scheduling delays were because of it or just because, but at least with me it lost all momentum.

This show, like Nancy Drew and Katy Keene, do not have a generous Netflix deal that kept many other CW shows on for years past their expiration date.

If I were running the show, I'd go in a completely new direction with Batwoman. Start infusing supernatural elements into the show. The lesbian angle only goes so far and avoid making it a low-rent Arrow knock-off. Have her meet Sherlock Holmes. Send her back in time if necessary for a side trip. Not like Legends, which has become completely ungrounded from serious drama.
CW isn’t getting that massive Netflix money on this. So really, it’s up to HBO MAX if they continue to buy new seasons or not. If they decide No, well, CW could can it.

Netflix was required to “buy” every season of a show from the start of the contract up until the previous CW season (so Roswell is all good, even In the Dark).

why do you think CW canned Katy Keene? It’s their first, first season cancelation in a while, IIRC. Maybe Valor/Frequency/No Tomorrow were the last? I don’t really remember now.

She was also used really well in James Tynion IV's Detective Comics run. Not sure the name of it, but it was the issues in the later 900s.

IIRC, after her introduction in 52 and then Countdown, she took over Detective, so this was pre-series, but that's where the JH Williams art started. Then her solo book was announced and delayed until they just launched it as part of the new 52.

This was her best. Bruce basically hired her to work with and train the young heroes of Gotham.

That whole arc is probably my favorite "Bat Family" type story. It made great use of some super underused characters like Spoiler. And it'll change how you view Clayface forever!

Decided to get off my butt and look at what issue numbers were included here. It was in Detective Comics and ran from issue 934 to 981. Look like there's maybe a
HC omnibus HC omnibus
coming out later this year, but it's also available in
TPB TPB
. Definitely worth checking out for anyone into Batman that wants to also read some cool Batwoman stuff. And Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain and some others I'm probably forgetting.

Saw Ruby Rose on The Tonight Show last night. Jimmy Fallon asked her why she's not doing Batwoman anymore. She said something along the lines that she and the producers agreed that they've done everything they intended to with the character. She also said something about wanting to give someone else a chance. Ummm, sure...ok.

That is such a BS answer. If that was the case you FINISH your current storylines and write your character out properly. They haven't even finished the Alice storyline which is her sister. That is such a bad answer.

Everyone knows the translation is - It was too much work and I didn't feel like doing that many episodes each year.

Javicia in costume as the new Batwoman. I think she looks great. I like the look and the hair.

Works for me.

Is that going to her real hair or a wig like Ruby? The red highlights seem like an awful way to disguise who you are.

And how does all that hair not fly in front of her face when she's in action?

I think that has to be a wig attached to the cowl. That's Batwoman's thing.

I was wondering about the hair thing. After skin color, black hair is the next "big deal" that no-one here on dvdtalk would understand or care about. But it matters...ask Candice Patton.

"I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl."

I guess we'll see how her alter ego looks so that it's not obvious she's Batwoman without the costume? Or will they not maintain a secret identity?

I hate it and not just because she is black. Just nothing like what I grow up with.. but I guess it works for this generation. Not like I was going to watch it anyway.

Unless you are super young, you probably didn't grow up with a Batwoman that looked like the previous version either. I mean this is what Batwoman used to look like:
