I've heard a lot about Bilie Eilish, but this was my first exposure to her music. She appears to be completely devoid of anything even resembling musical talent.

Well actually I came in here just to see what people were saying. This was the WORST way to introduce yourself to her music. This performance was absolutely awful. The sound mix was beyond worthless. You couldn't even fucking hear her, I was in shock listening to it. Just wow.

Did she forget to turn on the microphone for "Bad Guy?"
Where was Pete Davidson? Was he working on a movie or is he going to become the Antonio Brown of SNL

Keep in mind Billie Eilish is only 17, and wrote the music and lyrics with her brother.
Only Taylor Swift comes close to that level of talent. Most pop stars these days rely on producers and other songwriters to buy songs.
This was a very weak season opener. The Cheeto Museum skit was horrible. Only thing worse was Kyle Mooney's white rip off of Fresh Prince song.
The only thing I enjoyed was Kate McKinnon's Elizabeth Warren impression. Never thought I would miss Leslie Jones but....

Hey, at least they led with a fresh new Donald Trump impression. I was anxious to see how Alec Baldwin did with it, and wasn't disappointed. Hilarious!
This is cutting-edge comedy.

What was the deal with Weekend Update? Seemed like they cut it short.

Was that a stagehand jumping too early on getting Aidy to change her outfit?
"Bad Guy" is normally sung quietly/softly, but they still had the mic volume too low for it. It need to be increased a couple notches.

Not sure if serious but I sure would like ANY other cold open than Trump. Not a great opener and while Eilish's presentation was unique, the sound was shit and there were few lines (let alone) skits that were actually funny.

That was one of the most solid episodes I've seen of SNL in some time. the stagehand was probably one of the best parts but overall the episode start to finish was pretty decent. Refreshing not to have Leslie Jones cracking up over her own jokes as she was pretty horrible to watch. I did skip the Pedro Martinez bit as that always goes on too long. New cast seems decent, the new girl reminded me a little bit of a young Winnoa Rider or Natalie Portman.
I liked the bit about the CNN round table impeachment proceedings, it was refreshing to hear Kamela Harris liked her impersonation and not to hear someone piss and moan like a petulant child that the show should be investigated or finned for being funny and mocking them...

I didn't see her second song, but it doesn't sound like I missed anything.
They had a week or more to get the sound right, so maybe it wasn't the mix? Maybe it's talent? And as for this "she's only 17 and wrote songs" bit, Lydia Night of The Regrettes just turned 18 and has already written and recorded two full length albums. She also plays guitar on them, and performs live without the aid of a "guide track", which is the new euphemism for "lip-synch". THAT'S a band SNL should be courting.
ETA: As for the show itself, I was similarly unimpressed. Only made it to Weekend Update, so if there was something funny after that, I'll have to catch it later. No one took any chances, the whole thing was played safe. Woody's monologue went on way too long and seemed totally forced. The Cheeto Museum sketch was the second of the night, and that was at best 12:50 filler material. I'm not excited for this upcoming season and will be watching sporadically.

Billie Eillish was great. I’m an instant fan. Oddly, I was also introduced to Arcade Fire on SNL (about ten years late).

No one mentioned the rotating room!?!?
I’m so-so on Eilish. My 12 year old loves her. Performance sounded fine to me. She has a very low-fi sound. But my praise goes to her ability to do the old rotating room bit. She nailed that thing, and actually did the best job of it I’ve ever seen. The tricky spot that so frequently fucks up the illusion is that moment where you step off one plane onto the next. She found poses and held her body in ways that accented the illusion. It was very cool. And while it’s an ancient trick, I bet most 12 year olds haven’t seen before and it blew their minds.

Watching it again the other thing that really sells it is when they cut to a second camera angle when she’s “upside down”. That really makes your brain believe it.

The problem I had with the "rotating room", was that it was ONLY effective to the TV viewer. The studio audience saw exactly what was happening. Video "tricks" are for MTV. A live performance has to be no-BS. If you're going to pull off some stunt at a live show (and I've seen many in my lifetime), it can't rely on trick photography. I'll also admit, it's one of the many reasons I was so down on the performance in general.

The audience sees monitors. So they can see the effect and the artifice. Like when Penn and Teller show you how a magic trick is done. That’s it’s own kind of multi-level self reflexivity.

No, I know I'm an old fuddy-duddy, but I do remember when SNL's music performances were raw and real, and lip-synching was absolutely verboten. Those days are long past, Ashlee Simpson proved it. And perhaps the demise of music videos from MTV makes performers do video stunts like this in what is supposed to be a live performance.
It really is a shame though, that performers can't make the music itself, and the emotion to perform it, the most remarkable thing about it. Now it's all about gimmickry. God damn, I sound just like my dad. I remember watching some rock and roll band perform on a show one time, and my dad went all over himself pointing out "they're all wearing leather pants. It's their GIMMICK". Dad, if you can hear me, that was nothin' compared to what passes for gimmicks today.

Half of SNL's sketches can't be seen by the live audience except on video. They're working with multiple sets in limited space, and often times aren't actually facing toward the audience. It's all produced for the TV audience, not the live audience.
