Precisely. It has a live audience, but the intended audience is the tv audience.

The live studio audience for SNL is basically the same thing as the "live studio audiences" three-camera sitcoms are recorded in front of. SNL isn't like vaudeville; it's done for the tv audience, not the one hundred or so sitting in the studio.

No one mentioned the rotating room!?!?
But my praise goes to her ability to do the old rotating room bit. She nailed that thing, and actually did the best job of it I’ve ever seen. The tricky spot that so frequently fucks up the illusion is that moment where you step off one plane onto the next. She found poses and held her body in ways that accented the illusion. It was very cool. And while it’s an ancient trick, I bet most 12 year olds haven’t seen before and it blew their minds.

Yes, there are substantial segments of SNL that are not accessible to the studio audience (anyone remember the early early days when the camera would pull back after a sketch, and there was that section of seats over the top and behind the set? There was no way those people were able to see the sketch unless it was a monitor). Also agree that the intended audience is the millions watching on TV, not the hundred or so in the studio.
That said, I still believe the musical performance should not rely on any camera or video manipulation. From the beginning on, that was a hallmark of the show; other shows with musical guests like variety shows, American Bandstand, etc, all relied on lip-synching. SNL always insisted on a real live musical performance. Not anymore, I guess. With this Bilie Eilish precedent, now it's just music videos. Hell, they should save some money and not even have the musical guest there, just play their video. Pretty much the same thing now.

Well whatever you do don’t watch Kanya West’s SNL appearances.

Done and done.
Hell, I know I'm old-fashioned, but I just miss the spontaneity of stuff like John Belushi mimicking Joe Cocker, Chris Kattan pretending to be Ricky Martin, Will Ferrell playing cowbell with Queens of the Stone Age, Elvis Costello stopping the song to do Radio Radio, Billie Joe Armstrong running up into the crowd, Fear trashing the studio, The Replacements being totally sloshed, or U2 busting out I Will Follow during the goodbyes. None of that required anything but the cameras to catch it.

In 2019, you can see a popular music act perform on late night shows, morning shows, prime-time concert specials and award shows, in addition to the internet.
All of Billie Eilish's video work features a strong artistic visual presentation, including fashion. So while some old folks might criticize her, I am certain that her artistic choice thrilled her fans who wanted to see what she would do.
If you think she did not prove her musical chops, then you must not have watched her second performance, where she did exactly what you all wanted: she sat on a stool and sang. And she proved she could sing live, and beautifully.

Taylor Swift this week will be upgrade over Eilish and her legs will be the attraction.

I’m aware of her but never heard her. The room thing was interesting but I was very distracted by the room spinning gimmick.
Her second song was terrific.
As for Swift and her legs. Yeah they go all the way up.
To her her arms because there really isn’t anything else between there.

^ So what's your point that you needed to bump a 3 month old thread?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the point was to call out the "fuddy duddies" who, just four months ago, were wondering who she was, and were criticizing her performance, because now The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has certified her as a great and important artist.
Think about it. She's now in the rarest air with Christopher Cross!

But not important enough to get her name spelled correctly in the thread title

I’ll be damned if anyone is going to say one bad word about Christopher Cross. The man created the single smoothest song ever recorded.

I have no idea who Christopher Cross is.
Makes me feel... young.

A forum dedicated to an obsolete format doesn't know the theme to the movie Arthur?
