I hadn't really thought about it, but, yeah, Kevin and Kate haven't been obnoxious this season.

Another solid episode. I'm wondering whether Kevin will end of up with military chick, but it doesn't seem that way so far. I do like his evolving relationship with his uncle. Randall's hereditary anxiety was an ok plot but not much to mine there. Very little time spent with present day Kate, which is fine.

Were Rebecca and Kate talking about Kate’s weight gain at the end as they were looking at pictures?

I think that boyfriend turns out to be a bad guy - we just don't yet know what he did.

That makes sense.

I was getting a date-rape vibe from that scene. I then recalled earlier he was moving too fast for Kate... met the family before she was ready and called himself the "boyfriend" likely before Kate considered him as such. I suspect his fast pace will go too far soon.

Wife and I caught up with the last two episodes last night. This is the best show on TV, hands down. The writers are doing everything right. Even Kate's story is watchable (mostly thanks to Omundson). The stories and character interaction is on another level.

I agree completely. It would be easy for this show to become either maudlin or saccharine sweet, but the writers have managed to perfectly balance the plot, and the superb acting sells it. The show hits just the right notes and keeps me engaged throughout. As I think I said earlier in the thread, this is the only show currently on TV that causes me to put my phone away for the entire time so I can just take it all in without distraction.

Spoiler:
I just KNEW that Randall was really a terrific golfer and he was faking to ingratiate himself with that other councilman. Well played. lol

Can I just say that I love, love, love the writer who wrote Randall's reply to Jack's "I don't see color" nonsense. "Then you don't see me" was perfect.

Last night's episode was good. The focus on Randall and Deja was really well done. Since I live in Philly I loved the exterior shots - I've been everywhere they showed (except I'm not sure where that cheesesteak shop is supposed to be - it appears to be a fictional version of Pat's but they didn't show the exterior).

Max's is real and was in Creed too: https://www.yelp.com/biz/maxs-steaks-philadelphia

I'm glad I was able to guess Boathouse Row. I love driving past that.

No kidding? Looks like there's another place I need to check out. I remember that scene from Creed, didn't know it was a real place.

Another great episode. The parts where Kevin was seeing Jack when Nicky was talking had my wife tearing up.

Yeah, that was a nice touch.

The Deja character annoyed me when she first appeared on the show, but now her plotline is one of the best IMO.

How can Miguel not notice Rebecca's mental decline? Or maybe he's just in denial.

I feel like they haven’t had big splashy stuff this season, but it’s just been consistently good every week.

I'm in my 40s and act that way when I lose my phone.

I'm curious what Randall is seeing that makes him think that she's losing her mind. The fact that she takes a lot of pictures? The fact that she wants to show off the pictures? Or just that she misplaced the phone in his office?

The producers answer the question:

Miguel called Rebecca’s frequent losses of her phone “senior moments.” Was he in a bit of denial, like Rebecca?
I think it’s a combination of two things. It’s definitely denial. And also when you’re with someone every day, in a way, you’re less aware of the subtle changes, you notice them less because you’re seeing them every moment. And when you see someone every three months, it feels more dramatic and you’re almost more attuned to it.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 4 Thread -- Premieres 9/24/19

So in the next chronological nine months:

-Rebecca has a public episode despite having decided to see a doctor
-Kevin knocks up someone and proposes to her (not necessarily in that order)
-Kevin and Randall have a falling-out and aren’t on speaking terms, though Randall still calls his mom (maybe Kevin knocked up Beth? )
-Miguel is at the birthday party, but Toby isn’t, perhaps because his emotional infidelity led to a split with Kate

Weaving footage to leave us in an unexpected place isn’t a new device, but this gave us a lot to unpack.

I've read the EP's responses and it seems like we'll have to wait until the first episode of next season to get the full story of what's going on at the birthday party, as the "Big Three"'s birthday starts each season. Though you're kidding, they said Kevin did not get Beth pregnant. I was a little surprised at Kevin's news, since he just set his goal to achieve a family by 40, and Nicky noted the time factor. Could he have knocked up Jennifer Morrisson? Or, in typical Kevin fashion, did he do something stupider than that?
It's definitely the kind of "Fall Finale" that leaves you with some anxiety for what's next...

Regarding the Kate/Toby potential split. In the flash forward scene, Kate signed the police report "Kate Pearson" and was not wearing a wedding ring. Maybe these are just red herrings, but obviously may also be huge clues.

I noticed the name but didn’t register that it might have been changed. That seems like it’d be a pretty fast divorce and name change, and it doesn’t seem like you’d use your “not official but desired” name on a police document. Definitely a good spot to add to the unpack pile!

Do we know for sure that Kate changed her last name when she got married? Did we see her name on a chart in the hospital or anything?

I just googled the question and found a couple speculative articles that didn’t know other than mentioning how her name appears on a Fandom page.

The text to Toby was named in his phone as LadyKryptonite, and I assumed it was a woman because it was, y’know, emotionally supportive, but wouldn’t that name make more sense as someone who women are attracted to, like “I’m Kryptonite to the ladies!” I guess it depends on how you read it and the intent behind the name. It could be a lady who’s Toby’s Kryptonite, though that would seem to me like a dumb and clumsy name.
