Have the showrunners specifically said that BTK will be the focus of S3? If not, I could see him being a throughline in the background each season (like they did this season) and then a flashforward at the end of the series to his capture.

Gotta admit, I didn't see that coming.
Holt McCallany nailed it this season.

A VERY infamous case at the time.
California was really on edge at the time.

Finished season 2 last night and thought it was excellent.
Richard Ramirez, aka "The Night Stalker," happened a few years after this season ends so that may be something for season 3.

Regarding BTK, I read someone's opinion, and it makes sense, that his purpose is to show that Ford and company's work isn't perfect. Ford talks about how these guys can't function in normal society and BTK proves that wrong. It goes along with what Kemper told them this season, that they've only talked to the guys that have been caught.

A lot of these guys were able to pass themselves off as normal: Ridgeway, BTK, Bundy...
They sometimes held down jobs and had families.

Many people thought (considering the savagery of the crimes) they would be found frothing at the mouth like rabid dogs.
One of the keys to their success is they didn't initially appear threatening.

I'm not very familiar with the true story; is any of the conspiracy stuff with Manson mentioned remotely possible? Or was it clearly him manipulating the kids to kill?

One of the problems with the Manson case is there was very few eyewitnesses: no survivors and the so-called "Family" didn't flip on Manson (generally).
This made it hard for investigators to piece together anything other than the basic outline with confidence.
The best that can be said is some of the Family members did commit murder...that's a certainty.

Interesting. I'll have to read up on it. What were they even able to charge him with; considering it was all hearsay?

Re: Mindhunter (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 8/16/2019

Finished it tonight.

I thought it was decent, although I did have some issues.

Not a fan of Groff - his performance is annoying.
Putting Bill's kid in the toddler's murder scenario is just trying too hard to give Bill a personal view of the behavioural science. Hate when shows force something like that.
I couldn't care less about Wendy's personal life.

The one problem with the series is that I'm not really getting any more information than I already got by reading books, articles and watching documentaries on these cases from any perspective. In fact, the series just glosses over the real stories.

You have to understand those times in California.

The Manson Murders completely took over the news cycle until the trials ended.
People were scared and disgusted beyond anything imaginable.
A young and pregnant beautiful B-movie actress eviscerated by "hippies" was too much for fragile decent folk to take.

As the cult leader, Manson was gonna be found guilty regardless of evidence.
No jury at the time wouldn't have.
In spite of not being at the Tate Murders himself, he was going down.

I agree about Groff. There's something about the way he carries himself that's just strange. Like I think at any moment he could bust out and be a serial killer himself. He's so cold and calculated.

I kind of like that for the character, though. Holden is singularly focused on the job. He had no personal story arc in this season--and there was enough of that with the other two leads--but I think that contributes to the 'cold and calculating' feeling from him at times. His interaction with the Atlanta moms did show an empathetic aspect to him.

I kept expecting the black FBI agent to start channeling Tim Meadows. It was difficult for me to take him seriously.

If they ever do a true The Dark Knight Returns, I want him playing Bruce. Not only does he have the chops, but he looks like Miller's drawn depictions.

Finished it. Good season but it was sort of a bummer. Felt like the resolution of the case was anticlimactic, but then again, it was that way in real life, so I guess it fits.

He was awesome, and most likely set the new Hollywood Record For Most Cigarette Light Ups in a series.

As often is the case in real life crime, the ending of the case was banal.

Yeah despite not being a fan of all three of these things, I still loved the show. Fortunately two of those things shouldn't be a factor going forward.

For anyone interested, the Oxygen Channel has a special documentary on Ed Kemper:
https://www.oxygen.com/kemper-on-kem...-serial-killer
A lot of time is spent on Kemper talking about himself to the camera.
John Douglas (Holden Ford) is interviewed as well.

Re: Mindhunter (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 8/16/2019

Finished this up last night. Liked it, but season 1 was better. I know it didn't take up a ton of screentime, but got tired of the scenes with the Kansas weirdo and it having nothing to do with the season. Showrunners need to stop teasing this and make this guy the antagonist of season 3.

Re: Mindhunter (Netflix) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 8/16/2019

He can't be the antagonist for season 3. I like that he's just always there doing his thing for like 3 minutes an episode. It's what all the research is working towards but it'll probably end up being a 3 minute epiloge on the end of the very last episode of the series to wrap it up.
