Back to a 3 episode season. Ohwell, still love the series.

I think Bandersnatch took up a lot of their time, considering it's probably 3+ episodes worth of content.

Damn! After what feels like forever, it's only a 3 episode season?

Can't wait to watch it, but that's disappointing.

Yeah, I'm really stoked for the new season (series, whatever) but only three episodes. Damn.

I was thinking more about all the footage they shot than the user experience. Considering all the branches, there's 312 minutes of footage total in Bandersnatch, or 5 hours 12 minutes.
https://www.slashfilm.com/black-mirr...rsnatch-movie/

So that's about 5 regular episode lengths, but considering that a lot of that is alternate versions of the same scene, it's not like it took them 5x as long to shoot.

This article says it took about 3x as long as a normal episode to shoot:
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/li...lained-1171486
The shoot for [Metalhead], which co-starred a CG robotic dog, was 12 days. Bandersnatch was filmed in 35 days over a seven-week shoot, and all the assets had to be locked and loaded by the end of November.
Post-production, and even pre-production, sound like a headache though.
"We knew it was going to be quite complicated; we didn't know how complicated," Brooker admitted to THR. He went into the project assuming it would require twice the amount of effort for a typical Black Mirror episode. Now he likens it to doing four episodes at the same time. Jones, half-jokingly, said to THR, "I don't think we would have done it if we'd known how complicated it was going to be."

It's only been 5 months since Bandersnatch.

It seems like the team rushed to get Bandersnatch out first, then switched to working on the other episodes. Maybe if they held Bandersnatch back until a few weeks or even a month before the other episodes the gap wouldn't seem so disparate. I do think Bandersnatch warranted a sort of solo release so it could be experienced and discussed outside the rest of the season, but the 5 month gap makes it seem a completely separate thing from a normal season, so it seems a lot of people were expecting this massive interactive movie, and then a normal season.

Hopefully, the timespan allowed them to give extra attention to the S5 shows.

It's not like 3 episodes a season is something new for them.

Agreed.

It kind of is. It's been 6 years since they had a three episode season. Granted, there have only been 2 seasons since that, but they were each 6 episodes.

Which doesn't mean it's new...

It's also entirely possible that there are three other episodes in other stages of production that could come out later in the year.

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

Count me among those who are really excited to have a new season while also bummed it's only three episodes. I know we got Bandersnatch in the interim, but given the longer wait we had between seasons 4 and 5, getting half the number of eps we'd gotten the last two seasons is an inevitable letdown. Still... glad it's back, and I hope they announce another three episodes for later this year.

Actually, Bandersnatch was a lesser episode in my opinion. I wish they would have used the extra time spent on that to crank out one or two additional normal episodes (without any gimmicks) instead.

Agreed. Minus the gimmick, Bandersnatch ranks among the worst Black Mirror episodes. I was mostly entertained the first time through, but was bored to tears testing out the other options. The irony is that their better episodes have more replay value than Bandersnatch does.

Also... the original thread was getting long. I went through and broke them up into Seasons 1 & 2, Season 3, Season 4 threads.

Re: Black Mirror (Netflix) -- Season 5 Thread -- premieres 6/5/19

Watched all three new episodes today.

They're not bad. But they also don't really leave you with much of an impression, unlike the best Black Mirror episodes. I think if this was a brand new anthology series, and not Black Mirror, these three episodes wouldn't generate much buzz. They're not bad, but they're not among the series' best.

The second, "Smithereens," was my favorite of the three and built some genuine tension. I think fans of the series will mostly enjoy them, just don't expect any kind of gut punch.

I agree. I enjoyed all of them but nothing really stood out like some some of the older episodes still do.

I watched Striking Vipers. Interesting... But entertaining seeing Mantis getting plowed during most of the episode.
