they were bringing in more peasants as human shields, assuming that would prevent dragon death from above.

HBO *wanted* more *seasons* and/or episodes and offered whatever resources/money needed to do so. It was D&D who chose the episode numbers per season and to end it so quickly. Their poor writing and plotting in a run up to the end is why the last 2 seasons are so rushed and disjointed. Martin has said it would take another 3 or so seasons to properly tell the story as it'll be in the books. I get the impression D&D are wanting to move on to their Disney Star Wars project (which likely pays far more than HBO for GoT with less work).

If you had to sum it up in a phrase, I think this pretty spot on.

I don't have a problem with most of the plot points of the episode, but I did feel that it certainly seemed like the Daenerys heel turn happened awful quick. Sure there's been foreshadowing, and the occasional moment, but just a couple episodes ago she's up there fighting to save the universe, and now she's burning innocents for literally no reason. In an 8 or 10 episode season I think they could have made this and the transition work, but there's literally no time to breathe. Last week Missandei gets killed and she's pissed, now she's gonna burn everything down. Having some of those conversations with Tyrion (particularly about her "mercy") in an interstitial episode would have been helpful to get people to swallow this.
Loved the Clegane Bowl and Tyrion/Jaime's last moment together. The Jaime/Cersei thing does feel like a bit of a shock given what has gone between them and his relationship with Brienne. What was even the point of that then? Better to have let her die heroically in the battle of Winterfell. I get that he couldn't escape his love for his sister, but again... the pacing is way off given the handful of episodes they had to work with.

I wonder what all the parents who named their daughters Daenerys think about this turn of events? Hopefully their sons aren't named Adolf.
I never liked the Daenerys character in the books or on the show so I really don't care that she broke bad. And trying to tug the viewers' heartstrings over the destruction of King's Landing is ridiculous since the place has been portrayed as a cesspool of deception, inhabited by a wholly complicit population only too happy to turn feral at any given opportunity, since the very first episode of the show. At this point I'm still rooting for Sansa as the only major player that still has a functioning brain which surprises the heck out of me since that character started out so unlikable.
And yes, this stinking, stuttering end will certainly impact the rewatchability of the show.

I think Dany have Drogon melt down the Iron Throne and tell Jon she's pregnant with his child and return to Dragonstone and ruled from there.

Awesome episode!
Danny felts betrayed, of course!, she decided to help John in his war, and after she losses her two closest friends/advisors. And of course she lost John. You could even count Varys as a loss.
Last episode hopefully is as good as this one.

I do not get the criticism about the pacing. The war is here. Things will of course move quicker now that the characters aren’t all wandering the countryside having meetings about pledging fealty to various rulers.
This thing is almost over - this is known as “wrapping things up”.

Jaime had seen first-hand, and been on the receiving end, of what the dragons could do in the Tyrell countryside. And saw them in action again in the Battle of Winterfell. Maybe that played into his going back to save Cersei. But I think it was, as has been stated numerous times, just in his nature and he couldn't pull away from his past.

I bitched and moaned about the season, but that was a GREAT episode! Well paced, and it focused on a few characters so you felt the dramatic effect on them.

I fucking hate fandom. If I wanted everything shit on constantly, I'd buy a dog and feed him laxatives.

This is the perfect scenario for GRRM. Assuming the rumors that he's sitting on the next two books waiting for the show to end, he gets the luxury of seeing how this timeline plays out, and picking and choosing what he sees works or doesn't work.
