Kennedy McMann, who plays Nancy Drew, is considered a potential breakout star. Launching a Nancy Drew TV series has been a priority for CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to the the classic YA mystery books originally published by Stratemeyer Syndicate and later Simon & Schuster. The studio developed two Nancy Drew series over the past three years, Drew at CBS during the 2015-16 development season, which went to pilot starring Sarah Shahi and got close to a series order, and Nancy Drew at NBC this past season. Both incarnations, from writers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater and producer Dan Jinks, were conceived as sequels to the books, with an adult Nancy Drew at the center. The studio’s third attempt with a teen heroine and new writers proved to be the charm.

I didn't know Shahi did a Nancy Drew pilot. I definitely would have seen that. I wonder if they're going for a Veronica Mars vibe.

Too bad they won't do a teen show like the recent Hidden Staircase movie. Ages 9-16 is probably the real demographic for Nancy Drew. Not the 18-24yo crowd.

re: Nancy Drew (The CW) -- Based on the Books -- From the EPs of Gossip Girl
Premieres tonight
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9
SERIES PREMIERE
NANCY DREW
"Pilot" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, DLSV) (HDTV)
SERIES PREMIERE - Nancy Drew (Kennedy McMann) is a brilliant teenage detective whose sense of self had come from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine - until her mother's untimely death derails Nancy's college plans. Devastated by her mother's passing, Nancy swears off crime-solving while crossing off the days until she can re-apply to college. But when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself a prime suspect in the crime, along with a group of other teens present at the scene: Nancy's nemesis from high school, George Fan (Leah Lewis); a rich girl with a mysterious past, Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani); Nancy's secret boyfriend, Ned "Nick" Nickerson (Tunji Kasim); and amiable burnout Ace (Alex Saxon). The five of them must team up to clear their own names - encountering emotional entanglements and even more mysteries along the way. Nancy's reawakening brings her into conflict with her widowed father, Carson Drew (Scott Wolf), who is dating Detective Karen Hart (Alvina August). And, when a supernatural presence begins to haunt Nancy's investigation, she discovers that the current crime has an astonishing connection to the long unsolved murder of a local girl. Whether the ghost is here to help, or hinder Nancy remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: Nancy's going to have to unravel the clues from both the living and the dead to solve the crimes. Riley Smith also stars. Larry Teng directed the episode written by Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage with story by Noga Landau (#101). Original airdate 10/9/2019. Every episode of NANCY DREW will be available to stream on CWTV.com and The CW App the day after broadcast for free and without a subscription, log-in or authentication required.

I think I need to watch another episode or two to see if I like this enough to commit to it. I'm a little meh on the Pilot episode.
They do have a couple of decent supporting actors like Scott Wolf as Nancy's dad and Sara Canning, who was on The Vampire Diaries for awhile.
I felt like it was a very young adult serial killer thriller with a supernatural element.

Scott Wolf as dad, huge fail
Why do the CW insist on PCing everything in their shows just for the sake of it ?
Batwoman's a lesbian, Nancy Drew has a black boyfriend, just so unnecessary

Freddie Prinze Jr. was originally cast as the dad and he was in the pilot, but he exited the show and was replaced with Wolf. https://ew.com/tv/2019/05/09/freddie...ed-scott-wolf/

I liked it despite it the casting issues and being tonally all over the place. I’ll be back for the next episode. Not sure about the season pass though.

Yea, this seemed too supernatural for me (I have no idea if the book series has any elements of that). But that turned me off and I quit watching the premiere after 3 minutes. Oh well. I was looking for some lighthearted detective Nancy Drew mysteries for a CW show. I guess I was wrong.

CW orders a full 22 episode season
I re-watched the Pilot again and it actually played better the 2nd time around. I have a couple of episodes to catch up on.
