I was 16 and going to a Private Christian school when it happened. Lots folks making comparisons to the Book of Revelation, Chernobyl = Wormwood as mentioned in the Bible... End of the world stuff. On top of that it was Russia, so of course there was a bias against the Commies who put the world in danger.

Oddly, that was what sold it for me - the kind of perverse knowledge as a viewer of a show about an historical event - that everyone we see will be dead - some in minutes, some in hours, some in days, a few in years - and there wasn't a damn thing anyone could do about it.

After a long depressing day at work I watched this... and it didn't help.

Just amazing what these people went through and how many were willing to sacrifice everything to save more. This show is a great microcosm of the human spirit - both good and bad.

Jesus, I thought I watch a horror show after watching episode 3. The effect of the radiation on their body was a little too much for me to take.

The tracking shot of them cleaning the graphite off the roof was really well done and tense.
The last scene at the hospital was a rough one, with the mothers and their babies, and then Lyudmilla and the empty crib.

An excellent miniseries. I was 10 when it happened and remember the news reports. I've been reading up on additional details as the story has played out. I never would have guessed that they continued to run some of the neighboring reactors up until 2000!

I was far too young to know about it when it was happening, but did read a book or two when I was in high school. The preview above looked good, and the reviews seem to back that up. Hopefully I can get access to it at some point, as I don't currently have HBO.

This is now the highest rated series of all time on IMDB. GOT slipped a little based on its final season but obviously has a crap ton more votes in the equation.

Halfway through episode four and I still can't shake the images of the victims in the hospital. Truly ghastly imagery.
