Willow, the Disney+ fantasy series based on the 1988 movie, has found a new director for its pilot.
Jonathan Entwistle, known for the well-regarded series The End of the F***ing World and I Am Not Okay With This, has been tapped to direct the pilot for the show that is set after the events of the film.
Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) was due to direct the pilot and executive produce but announced Jan. 11 that he was stepping away due to scheduling concerns and an upcoming baby due in the summer.
Entwistle is also exec producing and now joins executive producers and co-showrunners Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Wendy Mericle (Arrow). Kasdan wrote the pilot.
“With its epic world of swords, sorcery and adventure, Willow captivated and influenced so many,” said Entwistle in a statement. “I’m excited to be going on this journey and working with Jon and Wendy to create something that is both deeply rooted in that original film and also a fresh, funny and charming addition to the beloved story. To be able to play within the world so painstakingly crafted by Ron back in '88 is a dream come true for me."
The series returns Warwick Davis to the title role of Willow Ufgood, the heroic apprentice Nelwyn sorcerer of the original film. Ellie Bamber and Cailee Spaeny are among the new additions.
The production begins shooting this spring in Wales.
The series will be executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Jonathan Kasdan, Wendy Mericle, Roopesh Parekh, Ron Howard and Imagine Television, with Hannah Friedman as co-executive producer. Additionally, Bob Dolman will serve as consulting producer with Julia Cooperman as producer.

I actually liked that bit, even staged introductions to a cast can be a lot of fun to watch. This is one of the shows on D+ I am really looking forward too and am glad that when John Chu dropped out it did not completely derail the show being developed.

The Dempsey guy practically looks like he could be a son of Val Kilmer. Wonder if that will be his part in this.

I really enjoyed that series. Very much like Curb Your Enthusiasm in nature.
I'm kind of curious as what tone the series will have. The original was going for serious but at times came across , unintentionally, as tongue in cheek.

My wife and I watched the movie last night (her first time and my first since probably childhood). She thought it was terrible and I thought it was just mediocre. Warwick is obviously the standout but the film overall is boring with drawn out action scenes and the Brownies really needed to be cut.

My girlfriend and I still quote the movie often. It has a lot of charm to it. Both of us really looking forward to this series. Warwick Davis is living his best life.

The movie really only stands out as being the last 80s sword and sorcery flick and one of the few to get a large budget. Lots of rose colored glasses used when looking at this one. Effects are still okay as is location shooting, Davis does alright for being so young, but the acting is pretty damn bad from everyone involved , the Brownies are annoying AF, and quite a few stupid choices by characters.

This series comes out when many 3 year Disney plus memberships are about to or will expire. I wonder how many stay on or bail.

Can't wait!! Willow has always been a favorite of mine. It's looks like Disney blew their location budgets on Andor and Willow. They both look great visually and both shot on location (not sure if Willow also skipped using the Volume).

An interesting experience I had this week: I’m taking a class for an endorsement and we were all introducing ourselves by sharing an interesting fact about ourselves.
One guy said “When I was a kid I auditioned for the movie Willow.” I looked over and realized he was a dwarf/little person. I want to ask some follow ups after class sometime.

Looks amazing!
I'm probably one of the few here that read the Chris Claremont Trilogy Chronicles of the Shadow War (Shadow Moon ('95), Shadow Dawn ('97), and Shadow Star ('99)), and I hope that this adds to that legacy.
Reminds me, I need to reread those books again.

The new trailer looks impressive, especially in the advancement of FX work. While I know the original had what was state of the art FX at the time, it's apparent technology wasn't where it needed to be to tell the story on the scale they really wanted. I definitely getting Gandalf vibes off of the Willow character. Also love the quick shot of Sorsha and her daughter standing with their swords drawn. Curious as to who the bad guys are in this one, as they look like orcs, but doubt that's the case for copyright reasons.

You know, I don’t think I ever actually saw Willow all the way through. I’ll have to finally watch it in preparation for this series. It looks good.
