On the heels of one of the most dismal seasons in L.A. Lakers history, it’s probably a little painful to relieve the glory days of Hollywood’s home team. That is what Oscar winner Adam McKay (Vice) is doing with Showtime, a drama series project, which has received a pilot order at HBO.
‘Showtime’ Drama About 1980s L.A. Lakers From Adam McKay Gets HBO Pilot Order
Written by Max Borenstein (Godzilla), the true story project is based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.
McKay will direct the pilot for Showtime, a fast-break series chronicling the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties—a team that defined its era, both on and off the court.
With Pat Riley as coach and Magic Johnson and Kareen Abdul-Jabbar as stars, the Lakers made seven trips to the NBA Finals in the eight-year stretch from 1982-89, winning the title four times. Along with the glory of the Showtime Lakers, the book takes a look at the big personalities and the behind-the-scenes drama often associated with assembling a dram team.
“Jeff Pearlman’s book and Max Borenstein’s script of the story of the Showtime Lakers really knocked me over. Sexism, racism, tragedy, redemption, no look passes and a giant cultural shift in America,” McKay said. “I can’t wait to start filming.”
The pilot is currently casting, raising curiosity who would play Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar, Riley and Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Production is scheduled to begin this summer.
McKay is executive producing through his yet-to-be-named new company which he has launched after recently parting ways with long-time producing partner Will Ferrell and dissolving their Gary Sanchez Prods. Joining McKay at his new company is former Gary Sanchez Prods. executive Kevin Messick, who will executive produce Showtime alongside McKay, Borenstein and Jason Shuman. Jim Hecht co-wrote the story and co-executive produces.
At HBO, McKay is executive producer and director on the well received drama series Succession, which has been renewed for a second season. It earned him a 2018 DGA Award. Adam McKay’s long history at HBO goes back to Funny Or Die Presents… andEastbound & Down.
McKay’s most recent feature, Vice, starring Christian Bale as former Vice President Dick Cheney, received eight Academy Award nominations. He won an Oscar for The Big Short.
Borenstein wrote the screenplays for Legendary’s “Monsterverse” franchise: Godzilla(2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019) and Kong v Godzilla (2020). His next film as writer and producer is What Is Life Worth. In TV, Borenstein recently created The Terror: Infamy for AMC.
Hecht most recently sold his pitch Fairy Tale Ending to Universal alongside Tracy McMillan. He will write the script and is set to produce the female ensemble comedy starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Octavia Spencer. Additionally, Paramount Players recently acquired Hecht’s script Unboxing.
McKay was reppped in the deal by WME and Ziffren Brittenham; Borenstein by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Eric Feig; Jim Hechtby WME, Gotham Group and Del Shaw.

Yeah, getting actors who both look like Kareem, Magic and Worthy, are tall, and are at least halfway good at acting seems like a tall order (pardon the pun). If the casting is not great, everything else falls apart. Even the very-good, borderline-great Moneyball had an issue when it came to casting actors as well-known ball-players. And those guys didn't need to be tall or anywhere near as recognizable as Kareem and Magic.

This Pilot will live or die by it's casting. I think finding someone who can act and has the personality of Magic will be a difficult task.

Maybe if they just got guys who captured their essence but that would be difficult if they have a lot of basketball scenes.
The first NBA game I ever watched was the 1988 NBA Finals Lakers vs Pistons.
Magic's life outside the court could be interesting if it is uncensored.

Is that really the official name of the show? I mean, sure it's 100% right given the subject matter BUT the promos? "Watch 'Showtime' now, only on HBO" is just going to be confusing to consumers.

I could see Black Manta as Magic, he's already in Watchmen for HBO so there's a connection, seems affable, tall

There's also a rockumentary in the works about 70s pop metal band Starz that's going to air on Cinemax, and a Cecil B. DeMille bio called "Epics" that will air on The Movie Channel.

HBO is recasting the lead of its pilot about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers. John C. Reilly has been tapped to play Jerry Buss. He replaces Michael Shannon who was originally cast in the role but exited due to creative differences.

Well that is an interesting turn. Shannon is such a fascinating actor of course but John C. Reilly brings an entirely different energy and probably better matches the vivaciousness of Dr Buss. Plus he's never done a dramatic TV series before (as far as I can remember), so that will be different.

More actors cast. They will play Michael Cooper, Donald Sterling, Chick Hearn and Magic Johnson's Dad Earvin Senior. And according to the story, the show is Untitled Showtime Lakers project. So it will get a new name.
Most of them are unknown.
Spencer Garrett from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is playing Chick Hearn

ordered to series.
but officially it’s called Untitled Lakers project. I guess they can’t use the name Showtime because it’s a competitors networks name.

This project is still Untitled. Showtime was the name of the book it's based on.

I like that casting. And it will be worth a watch if only for John C. Reilly as Dr Buss.
