Wow, I'm shocked at how funny this episode was, as someone who has come to detest SNL for its phone-it-in performances, lazy writing, and hyperpartisanship. This was great!

The "What's My Name" bit was one of the best skits I've seen in the last 40 years, IMO. Mulaney is one talented guy. (His standup is hilarious too).

Turns out the secret is to have talented people do the skits, and actually write well. Who knew?

I can't deny that the Bodega Bathroom was funny, but I also know that they were trying to recreate the magic of the Lobster in a Diner sketch from last time, so it lost a little shine for me.

Just two hosting gigs under his belt but Mulaney is reminding me of Steve Martin in the 70s as a go-to regular host who really brings out the best in the show. I suspect that since he no longer has a regular outlet for sketch ideas, Mulaney comes in with a bag full of good ideas built up to use when he hosts.

In the Cohen open and the Shark Tank sketch, I think they put Kate McKinnon to waste especially considering the wigs and make-up involved.

I hope Mulaney is available for the upcoming election season if/when Beto O'Rourke decides to run. That would be the best casting since Tina Fey/Sarah Palin.

Surprised they had Thomas Rhett. He's about as bland & generic a country singer as you can find. And I really didn't get that electric slide sketch. The joke is that a white person knows black people??

It's an anti-sketch. It's a meta-joke that all the set-ups for uncomfortable moments are instantly diffused. The music and dancing is a distraction. Do the same sketch without the movement and music;the result is dead air.

This actually highlights how bad SNL currently is. You know why that sketch was hilarious? Bill Hader. None of the current cast members delivered a single laugh in the whole sketch, but Hader absolutely killed and Mulaney was solid. If Beck Bennet played the host in that sketch with exactly the same writing, it would have been a complete dud.

Re: SNL (S44S14) -- 03/02/19 -- H: John Mulaney -- MG: Thomas Rhett

It was an ok episode. Mulaney is a decent host.

I didn't find the dancing sketch funny or interesting.
Was funny when McKinnon was having a hard time keeping a straight face during the meat bit on Weekend Update.

I've heard of Thomas Rhett, but I think this was the first time I've heard his songs. Not impressed - but it's new country crap, so it's not really surprising.
They don't normally end the show on the music guest, do they? I always thought there was at least one more sketch before they do their goodbyes.

It was exactly the same skit that they ran several years ago I loved it back then. I think it was better the first time - the way we tend to forget the underlings who work for us and help us on a daily basis. Much more funny than forgetting your best friend's girlfriend of four year -- who has that problem? I guess this was a "sequel" but it was a one-off before and this didn't really refer to the previous skit - they even slightly changed the name of the game show - though Hader still hosts it.

I never heard the term "Bodega" or knew what it was until this show though I don't live in a big city like New York.

I bet people thought SNL was not funny when Mulaney was one of the writers from 2008-2012 and now finally give him his due after he left the show.

They have been on a roll lately with the Cheadle and Mulaney shows after a slow start so far in 2019 though that might end next week with Idris Elba though I hope he surprises us with a hidden knack for comedy.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but I thought the Toilet Death Ejector was hilarious. Apparently it was a Mulaney written short from back when he was a writer on the show, that didn't get past the table read.

Great episode I thought. The cold open, monologue, bodega, whats that name?, toilet death ejector, and WU were all really good. Kate McKinnon corpsing was great too, since she never really does. Also, I was actually pretty surprised there was no Stefon during WU considering Mulaney was hosting and Hader appeared multiple times.

It's funny, my DVR automatically records the retro SNL that airs right after the new episode. Man, I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have at the time, but the Fey, Poehler, Wiig, Hader, Sudeikis, Armisen, Forte, Meyers, Samberg, Thompsen era cast is as good as any SNL cast in the shows 45 years. Like all sketch shows, not everything hit, but the stuff that did was usually pretty great.

The Toilet sketch was great though the retro episode was with Ryan Reynolds and Lady Gaga from 2009 and Fey and Poehler were gone by then.

Mulaney will be on the season 3 finale of Crashing next Sunday.

.
It was apparent the meats had a very strong odor that was grossing everyone out. Also, they dressed McKinnon, who is vegan, like Temple Grandin the livestock expert.

What's My Name and the Monologue were highlights. John is a funny guy.

Agreed. The monologue was a rare highlight. I actually usually fast forward past it, except when the host is a stand-up. I've never seen him perform before, so I don't know how many of those were recycled bits, but it was really funny.

As he started his monologue, my daughter said "I wonder how long it will be before he mentions that his wife is Jewish?". It was about 30 seconds.
