First two episodes are up as part of the Max (re)launch.

They answer this:

The shop owner always calls him Mogwai. The kid asks Mogwai what his name is. Mogwai attempts to say it in his language but the kid just hears Gizmo. So they made a lame attempt to explain it. I prefer him being called Mogwai to be honest.
