Amy Poehler being involved means I'm in. Which reminds me, I have to catch up on Broad City.

I started to watch this then noticed it was a series. Episodes look short, though. Maybe start this tomorrow.

I’m glad the episodes are short, but they’re pretty entertaining. It’s definitely not a rehash of Groundhog Day in any way. 4 episodes in so far and it’s taken some pretty interesting turns. I’ll definitely watch the rest.

I watched the first episode and had a blast. I stopped because I saw that ABC Murders is live on PRIME, which takes priority over this. I will resume after I finish that.

To the movie? Well she’s not re-rehashing the same day the same way. But I’m sure you’ve seen some of the episodes to figure that out.

Good show once it gets flowing, but man she dies easily nice mix of comedy and depressing existential crisis

"Jesus fucking Christ that's dark"

That said who are these people? How do they all have massive NYC apartments?

Binged all 8 episodes, thoroughly excellent.

Watched the UHD disk of Groundhog Day first tonite, then moved on to this.

Seriously, when is Hollywood going to cut its reliance on tobacco subsidies?
Watching Ms. Lyonne sucking on stogies while parading around a set is so 1970-ish.

It's an active part of her character that's written into the show, and not a throwaway trait like it usually is (Maniac comes to mind, but she did look cool).

Would the character have been LESS interesting or believable without it?
IMO, it's a lazy prop for lousy writing.
Very few mature adults of any substance smoke today (for obvious reasons).
When is Hollywood going to grasp this?
I thought there was some kind of agreement among the Powers-That-Be in the industry from a few years back to reduce this in films...

Imo, yes. Knowing people extremely similar to the character that always have a smoke hanging from their lip helps, and here it's used to make her look properly pathetic. It doesn't fit a lot of the time but it's justified in this series
Spoiler:
especially considering it's largely about the self-destructive behavior of the leads

but I get the overall stance, just feel like this show actually included it properly and in an anti-glamorous light.

The film thing was to keep it out of PG-13 and lower movies, this is a TV-MA tv show.

You said in ANY way. Dying and starting again in the same place and trying to get out of the loop are exactly from GD. The show is different in other ways but in this way its the same.

Since I haven't watched more than the first episode, I'll take your word for it.

I have a hard time abiding smoking in modern movies/series.
Have seen too many people die from it up close.
You don't want lung cancer (trust me).

This got way better the more it went on. I was close to bailing after Episode 3, but I'm glad I didn't as Episode 4 is where it becomes interesting. They shouldn't have waited that long to get to that reveal.

Re: Russian Doll (Netflix) C: Poehler, Lyonne, Headland; S: Natasha Lyonne

Do NOT watch that trailer before you watch the show! What the hell were they thinking including the last clip?

I really enjoyed this! Any ideas on whether this is a one-and-done or if we should expect more? It seems to come to a conclusion, yet it seems as if there is more to the story as well.

I was really expecting this to go the route of a certain movie that is in theaters now. They kept laying those seeds in a number of different ways.
Spoiler:
I really expected to find out they were in a video game she was programming. There were a bunch of “clues” that were pointing to that path:

*The game they play in Alan’s apartment has multiple references to the goings-on, such as falling down the “surprise” hole and the sudden appearance of a second, male character.

*The random disappearances of items/people and the breaking down of their bodies could be the debugging of a program and stripping away elements to find the problem.

ps — I love me some Natasha Lyon ... and as a red head ...

It was pitched as at least 3 seasons.

One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while, sci-fi-ish with a lot of nice existential twists and very New Yorker vibe.

Re: Russian Doll (Netflix) C: Poehler, Lyonne, Headland; S: Natasha Lyonne

going to have to give this another shot. Didn't finish the first episode but really didn't know what the show was about so I couldn't tell where it was going with the repeated death function. Couldn't quite tell if it was a period drama, comedy or "dramadey" in the first ten minutes so I turned it off...

Phil doesn’t die every day in Groundhog Day, he does go to sleep and wakes up on the same day. Which adds to his frustration because his loop seems to have no end.

Happy Death Day: Tree & Russian Doll: Nadia and Alan are only stuck in the loop when they die. Russian Doll even shows the events after their birthdays.

Delighted to get answers and a definitive ending. So many shows now lack resolution and tease what’s coming to build anticipation for the next season.

No no idea what they’ll do for the next season.

I've heard a lot of people say: If the first episode didn't grab you, stick with it through the end of episode 3. That seems to be the hook that gets people. With sub-30-minute episodes it isn't asking for a huge time commitment unlike many shows.

Huh ... I wouldn't call that "answers and a definitive ending".

I can't wait to see where it goes from there!

I think the ending was open to interpretation, but it was an ending. I can't imagine how they would do another season with the same characters. In fact, who's to say there's even going to be another season? Looks to me like a single story they intended to tell over several episodes, and that's it.
