Man, I dig Natasha Lyonne's deadpan humor. She's great in this.

You don't want lung cancer (trust me).
There's a whole lot of drug use going on with the character and her friends, and it's not just tobacco. Her self-destructive tendencies are a major plot point. It certainly doesn't glamorize smoking, nor is it simply used for mood.

With that said, I thought it was unlikely that anyone in such a nice apartment would allow people to smoke tobacco indoors. The last time I saw people smoke ciggs indoors like that at a party was the '90s.

Almost as unlikely as living the same day over and over and over!

So after giving it a second go, we finished this last night. Nice storyline overall, I could do without the smoking as well but it didn't stop me from enjoying the show, make me feel Natasha was cooler or make me want to take it up. It was a nice surprise to see Paulie from the original Rocky movie. i did a double take the first time I saw him in the apartment building coming outside, he seems to have slowed down but was very recognizable from the last time I saw him in his 1976 role.

I was a little touched by the final episode and was surprised how much I cared about both characters.

I wonder if the guy getting after her for smoking was added post-release as a dig to DVDTalk.

I was a little surprised at just how
Spoiler:
unlikable she was when Alan was trying to save her life in the final episode. I almost went back to verify that's how she was at the start of the series

Man - tried this last night - quit half way through the first episode. She seemed to act "too hard". Maybe i don't enjoy watching people self destruct their lives.
On the one hand, yes, usually you have to make it through the pilot - on the other hand, this is Netflix, "pilot" doesn't have same purpose or meaning that it used to and maybe still does for networks - and if it's 8 eps that are a half hour each, that's not really a lot of room for wasted episodes.

It's better as a quick binge, not as episodes. I wasn't really into until after episode 3 (like pretty much everyone says), but then I had to see how it played out.

As for the ending, I can see it a couple ways; one with it being closed off, and another with it being totally opened up again. I like that it was left for viewer interpretation.

I thought so. The timelines re-divided. The two leads used what they learned to reconnect and help each other through the other's hard time.

Refreshing to see that compared to the ambiguity that almost every show uses now.

I have a thought that might be really entertaining or really irritating for a second season.
Spoiler:
Make season two like Time code with either 2 or 4 episodes going simultaneously in split screen with the multiverse episodes playing out on each screen. Would make rewatching each episode a must do, not sure how they would handel audio, possibly split it like they do with english/spanish / french...

I actually got goosebumps at the end of episode 3. I just didn't expect it.

Overall, I thought it was pretty good. Can't imagine a second season, however.

Just finished it. Fantastic show and role of a lifetime for Lyonne. Hope she gets some award love for this.

I'm with you...watched the first episode and just don't "get" what everyone loves. I find Lyonne to be grating.

I too watched the first episode and thought it was terrible.

Not a likeable character in the lot.

I won't be continuing.

I thought the same thing, there is something very off-putting in her performance in the first episode and I initially turned off the first episode, I have to say I came back to the show and am very glad I did as somehow the tone and acting change and the show was really good. Might want to give it another try. In a way the show is about redemption without giving too much away and I would say they become more likable over time.

They definitely piled on the bad traits in the first episode. It works great for the show's overall story arc, but certainly seems to be a hurdle for some viewers -- A negative of the "Netflix effect" now that there's no need for a pilot.

That said, I do hope Netflix can keep the quality up with their other new shows, this ranks pretty highly for me.

Re: Russian Doll (Netflix) C: Poehler, Lyonne, Headland; S: Natasha Lyonne

I watched this over the course of a few days. I thought it was OK, but not nearly as good as some are making it out to be.

I have to say, I'm sick of shows/movies that deal with stuff time-travel, parallel dimensions, time loops, etc. It's been done to death.

Are they doing another season? Because I'm not seeing the need for more seasons.

I did the same thing, and feel the same as you do.
Although obviously bankrolled by the tobacco industry, the characters and characters grabbed me eventually.
I thought the season/series should have ended with the penultimate episode.
I'm not sure the final episode was really necessary...I have to watch it again.

I am through 5. It is entertaining but I wouldn't call it great. Since it is short I will finish it.

I enjoyed it but I thought Natasha's character wasn't much different as Nicky in OITNB.

OK loved the finale. There are a lot of posts here I agree with and I am glad I watched it. Looking back at it based on some of the comments here it really helped put some things in perspective that I may have missed. I enjoyed it overall especially the last 3 episodes.

I don't watch the show, but fans might want to know that Natasha Lyonne co-authored today's New York Times Crossword Puzzle. Apparently she's a big fan, having been introduced to them by Fred Armisen.

Me too. I liked the show a lot, but it's not like they need a second season and tied everything up pretty nicely and completely.
