USA Network Announces Pickup of ‘Briarpatch’ Starring Rosario Dawson
POSTED ON 1/24/19

USA Network has picked up UCP and Paramount Television’s new anthology drama series, with the first season titled Briarpatch. Starring Rosario Dawson(Rent, Seven Pounds), the first season is based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name. It is written for television by Andy Greenwald, who will executive produce, along with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp, and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. Ana Lily Amirpour directed the pilot and also served as an executive producer. In addition to her starring role, Dawson will serve as a producer on Briarpatch.

Briarpatch follows Allegra Dill (Dawson), a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The season celebrates the beloved genres represented by Thomas’ book -- a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction -- while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation.

The season also stars Jay R. Ferguson (Mad Men, The Romanoffs), Brian Geraghty (Chicago P.D., Ray Donovan), and Edi Gathegi (StartUp). The first season will shoot in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“When we were first introduced to the anthology by Andy Greenwald, UCP and Paramount Television, we were immediately struck by the show’s unique tone and captivating story,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “And Sam Esmail’s incomparable vision and style, coupled with Rosario Dawson’s tremendous performance as Allegra Dill, will no doubt leave audiences buzzing.”

Greenwald will join Esmail on UCP’s roster of overall deals, developing and producing premium scripted content for cable and streamers. With UCP, Esmail serves as creator, showrunner and director of USA’s Mr. Robot, which will return for its fourth and final season later this year. Esmail is also developing a limited series based on Fritz Lang's sci-fi classic Metropolis. Most recently for UCP, he directed and executive produced Amazon's Golden Globe award nominated Homecoming, based on the podcast of the same name, starring Julia Roberts, Stephan James, and Bobby Cannavale.

This was just announced today by USA, so they haven't even filmed it yet. Probably won't air until late summer or Fall if I had to guess at the soonest.

Oh, it's already filmed. It's been made by The Watch podcast host Andy Greenwald and he has been chronicling the making of the show in New Mexico all of last Fall. I mean I guess I could have misunderstood and he only shot the pilot, but I don't think so. It took several months. Sounds like and interesting show, at least the way he's been describing it.

Deadline says it will shoot in New Mexico. Sounds like only the Pilot was filmed. The Pilot was ordered last April, so that's probably why it took months to get the script ready and then film.

1st trailer. Doesn't premiere until 2/6/20

It has a very Coen Brothers vibe.

Going to give this a try as I listen to the Watch and want to see how Andy did with this...

Me too. It's been a different sort of experience following the production for months from the show runner point of view. Really curious to see how it came out. Hope it's good as I have liked Andy for years.

Considering how strong the final season of Mr.Robot was, I'm definitely going to give this a try. The fact that its a limited series is also a big plus.

I really enjoyed the first episode. It was breezy with sharp dialogue and just weird enough to draw you in. Glad I gave it a shot.

Just watched the first episode and it was really weird - in a good way. I love Dawson so I think I'll set the season pass.

The episodes stream on the Bravo app. Finally got around to watching the pilot. Not totally sure how I feel about it yet. Willing to keep watching for now. That second explosion sure caught me off guard.

The third episode will now premiere next week in its new timeslot, after Raw on Mondays. They're hoping it will draw a larger audience .

Yeah the ratings, despite repeatedly being told they are bullshit and should be ignored, are absolutely terrible on this.

After seeing episode 2, I'm out. The show isn't fun or clever. Kudos to whoever advertised it that well though.

Has anyone stuck with this? I’ve been letting it build up on the DVR, but don’t know if want to bother.

I’m four episodes in. Mezzo-mezzo on it. It’s not bad but it moves really slowly. Love Rosario Dawson and Jay Ferguson. They’re great in it. Some of the other quirky characters do nothing for me. Like in Picket Fences and Northern Exposure, I am not a big fan of quirky side characters popping up all the time in what is otherwise a semi-realistic drama.

Yeah the quirky characters keep me coming back because the plot has me completely confused.

Re: Briarpatch (USA) -- S: Rosario Dawson -- From the Producers of Legion & Mr. Robot

I gave up after a couple episodes. The leads are fine but the dense, somewhat confusing plot doesn't offer enough of a hook to keep me around. This may be one show that works better on a binge watch.

The season finale ("Felicity") just aired, right? Anyone watch it all and recommend it? I watched the pilot and let the episodes build up on my DVR.
