Re: Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All-Access) -- Season 2 Thread -- Premieres 1/17/19

Good start last night. I liked seeing the Enterprise and Pike is a nice addition.

I'm amazed at the money CBS is putting into this. The special effects are almost feature film quality.

Nice to see Mia Kirshner as Spock's Mom. at little Spock slamming the door shut on young Michael.

Looks like CBS killed the Star Trek after show. It was posted after every episode last season and there was none last night. Guess they needed to save some money.

Does Ep 1 have any type of recap from season 1? I remember the basics but I'm sure there's detail I'm forgetting.

Yes, there is a "Last season on Star Trek Discovery" opening.

Ok. Now I may have to finally check this out. How big of a role will she have?

It's a recurring part and she appeared in a flashback sequence.

Don't know if she will appear in present time.

Her casting was actually announced during season 1, but I don't think she appeared in season 1 at all.

Edit: I just double checked and she did make 2 appearances last season.

That episode was a lot of fun. There was action and humor. I really like the fact that we learned the names of the bridge crew.

Did anyone else lean forward in anticipation of what command Pike would give to begin the mission? “Hit it!” Love it.

Also, I only saw the short about Tilly and the teen runaway. Were the other shorts as entertaining as that one?

And holy crap, Fast and Furious in space. That was a great scene!

Calypso was fantastic. I enjoyed the others as well.

All four shorts were good. Calypso was my favorite and the Harvey Mudd one was a hoot.

Yeah, all the shorts were great. They should let Rainn Wilson direct a full episode.

I said it last season, I’ll say it again, this is the best looking show on TV, bar none (even better than GoT). How much money goes into each episode?

Looks like they'll be doing Facebook Live shows starting Friday (replacing "After Trek")

https://trekmovie.com/2019/01/17/cbs...-nyc-premiere/

Starting next week CBS will be hosting weekly Facebook Live chats with Star Trek: Discovery stars, producers and creative talent. These Facebook Live events will be streamed on facebook.com/cbsallaccess each Friday, the day after each episode of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery is released. The first of these events will be on Friday, January 25th, the day after the second episode of the second season debuts on Thursday the 24th

Big improvement over last season. There were a lot of good ideas in s1, and a few terrible ones. This felt more ‘Trek’ to me and they’re making a few obvious course corrections in tone. Like Pike a lot; am crossing fingers the Spock actor is OK when they get there. Also look forward to Dettmer and the android and other crew members actually getting some character development at last...

Two fun episodes in a row with background info on a background character. I liked season 1 but so far, season 2 is shaping up to be better. Here's hoping it can be consistent.

Apparently trolls have been bitching online about having to pay for Star Trek Discovery.

Michael Okuda, a noted Star Trek historian responded to some of the dissenting opinions.

With Winona Ryder in the movie and Mia Kirshner here, Spock's mom is definitely 2 for 2 in the women I've always wanted to fuck department.

Not a fan of the spore drive or Tilly becoming the new Wesley, but this second episode was very good Trek. Discovering the Earth culture out in space hearkened back to TOS, with Pike following the Prime Directive (like Kirk never did) and then finding a loophole. Truth is, I could never completely get past the re-designed Klingons in Season 1. It bothered me every fucking episode they showed up.

"... for 2"?

I think you're forgetting one.

2nd episode was really good. It felt like a throwback to old school TOS and TNG episodes.

Mysterious signal is discovered and the crew discovers a new hidden world. I felt like the ending with Pike giving Jacob the power source to help their community have electricity was a magical moment the old shows used to do.

So far 2 for 2 this season.

I really like this season so far. Outside of the novels we know very little about Capt. Pike, so this really puts him in a good light.

Giving the scientist the battery wasn't "technically" breaking prime directive because they had one already they couldn't get to work.

Yea I get why people didn't like s1 and it's tone. But for me well the freaking ship was run by a mirror universe captain of course it was different tone, they explained it enough for me after the reveal. It should just be dropped at this point and let it stand on it's own real legs and see how it goes now. I love Tilly for some reason she's so great in her scenes. Still not loving Burnham but she's ok. I don't love the idea of some new spock but we'll see.

This has been great so far. Pine has elevated this to the next level.
